Star Wars: Episode VII - Discussion thread!

The movie will take place 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Big news! The movie "will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces." So that pretty much means Han/Leia/Luke will all be back.

Can't wait.

Yeah can't wait myself, definitely one of my favourite movie franchises. The rumour is they are getting Adam Driver (Girls) to play the villain, who is apparently gonna be Jacen Solo/ Darth Caedus (from the comics/novels) Leia and Han's son.

Carrie Fisher is more or less confirmed, as she said she is filming in London for 6 months. And R2-D2 is confirmed, and if they have R2, they have to have C3PO too.

Apparently Lupita Nyong'o from 12 Years a Slave has been in talks with JJ Abrams to be the new female lead. That'd be quite an addition to the cast!

That would be pretty sweet. I loved her in "12 Years a Slave"

I'm so excited to follow this during the whole process, I hope info gets leaked here and there, good set photos, etc. I think I enjoyed the hype for the prequel movies (especially the first one) more than the movies themselves, but now that these are sequels I'm even more stoked. Mainly 'cause I really hate prequels.

I've tried, I really have tried, but I just can't care less about this film. I imagine it'll be okay, it can't possibly be worse than the prequels. I wish literally anyone else but JJ Abrams was making it, cause I don't find him to a particularly good film maker.

^There's absolutely NO WAY that Disney lets this flop. I have way more confidence with them being behind it all than I would have if it was just Lucasfilm.

I mean I would hope so. I'm glad Lucas isn't in charge of writing it, which means less chance of stilted dialogue. But even so, if the prequels have proven anything, it's that the franchise will still make money by the bucket load, even if the film itself isn't particularly good.

I agree with you on this one. Keeping Lucas away is a good thing. And I hope to god there are no fucking ewoks or gungans.

Spoiler, Jar Jar is the new Yoda in this film. He has a big bushy white beard and walks with a staff, Gandalf style.

Abrams is a very shallow kind of director though. He's not without talent, but with Star Trek: Into Darkness I think he showed that if you give him a beloved pop culture franchise he's likely to turn it into a forgettable blockbuster. The prequels had no soul compared to the original trilogy, which was one of the (many) major flaws with those films and possibly the biggest one. I sadly feel that Abrams might bring this exact same trait to the new movies.

On the flip side though, Disney being behind the film makes me optimistic because this is something they tend to be quite good at. So I'm not sure what to think of this project at the moment. I'm definitely curious, but at the end of the day Star Wars has only been good half of the time at this point. So it's not something I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt - I just hope it really does live up to the hype.

I really wish they had picked a different director though.

This is pretty much my thoughts summed up. Also, Abrams is terrible at endings. Almost every film/TV show of his seems to run out of steam in the final third and collapses under it's own weight.

Rumours are that some filming could take place in Iceland (the country, not the shop ;) ) So people are thinking Hoth could make a return.

I think a huge detail people are overlooking is that Lawrence Kasdan is writing it.

I have faith in it and can't wait to see it.

Morocco is apparently a filming destination, so it looks like Tatooine could be making a return too.

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have all been spotted in London within the last few days, and the film is supposed to start shooting within the next couple weeks in the UK.

DEFINITELY NOT A COINCIDENCE :tim

I kinda wish they weren't in it, being honest. Does that make me a bad fan boy? It just smacks of cheap novelty - it'd be easier to stay true to the spirit of the originals without original characters actually in it. One of them in the film in a secondary role might be cool, but I don't want the film to be about these people.

Not looking forward to seeing Hamill most of all, I don't know whether he's gotten into shape but in recent years he's looked horrible and I don't want to see a fat, horribly aged Luke Skywalker :(
