Week 7 NFL Picks and Discussion Thread!

We have more undefeateds heading into Week 7 than at any point in league history, and three of them are guaranteed to make it through the week with that record in tact thanks to their bye weeks.

Here are this weeks games:

GAME OF THE WEEK – New York Jets (4-1) at New England Patriots (5-0), NE by 9 – The Jets have to be the biggest surprise team of the year so far. Four wins in five games and in solid position to get a playoff spot this year, all with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB. While this defense is definitely legit and I could see them giving the Patriots a run for their money on their own turf, I’m reluctant to say they can come in and dish out an upset in New England. I think they can keep it close, but Tom Brady and company will pull away as the fourth quarter rolls around. Patriots 27, Jets 17

THURSDAY NIGHT – Seattle Seahawks (2-4) at San Francisco 49ers (2-4), SEA by 6 – Who would have thought that going into week seven these two teams would be playing for last place in the division? How the mighty have fallen. This is a tough game to pick. The Seahawks have been great at building leads but even better at blowing them. The 49ers have shown a little bit of fight but don’t have anywhere near the talent of the Seahawks. I gotta take Seattle here but either way this one wouldn’t surprise me. Seahawks 20, 49ers 17

Buffalo Bills (3-3) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4) in London, BUF by 4.5 – The Jaguars have just been awful this season and there’s no reason to think they can take down Buffalo. Bills 24, Jaguars 10

Cleveland Browns (2-4) at St. Louis Rams (2-4), STL by 5 – These are two feisty teams capable of playing up or down to any opponent in the league. The Rams seem to only win games against their division, though, so I’ll take Cleveland to pull off a mild upset here. UPSET! – Browns 28, Rams 20

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-5), PIT by 2 – It’s unbelievable what’s happened to the Chiefs. There’s no excuse for them having this slow of a start. But now with Jamaal Charles out, they don’t have much hope this season. Even with Landry Jones at QB, the Steelers can get past a team that’s essentially lost all its fire. Steelers 23, Chiefs 10

Houston Texans (2-4) at Miami Dolphins (2-3), MIA by 4.5 – The Dolphins showed some new life last week against the Titans. Now they get a chance to beat the Texans for the first time in their history as a franchise. I like the Dolphins to show some of that renewed passion in this one. Dolphins 24, Texans 20

Minnesota Vikings (3-2) at Detroit Lions (1-5), MIN by 2.5 – Ok, I definitely sold the Lions short last week. Bad call in the endzone aside, they came out and took it to Chicago. The Bears have a significantly better offense than the Vikings (although a much worse defense). The Vikings are a real trendy playoff pick, but that offense is going nowhere right now. Playing on the road in a division game, they’d better hope they start getting some more points, otherwise they’re going to drop this one. UPSET! – Lions 20, Vikings 16

Atlanta Falcons (5-1) at Tennessee Titans (1-4), ATL by 4 – With a hurt Mariota and no real defense to speak of, the Titans can’t hold up to this Atlanta offensive assault. Falcons 37, Titans 13

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3) at Washington Redskins (2-4), WAS by 3.5 – Hard to know what to make of this one. I’ll probably go with the Redskins by virtue of them being the home team, but you can’t really put your faith in either of these teams to get a win. Redskins 26, Bucs 14

New Orleans Saints (2-4) at Indianapolis Colts (3-3), IND by 5 – The Colts get a break here, as the Saints aren’t really capable of picking up a road win in a hostile environment. They’ll likely stumble into another divisional title, but this is looking more and more like yet another “one and done” Indy team. Colts 27, Saints 20

Oakland Raiders (2-3) at San Diego Chargers (2-4), SD by 4 – The Chargers are so freaking inconsistent it’s really hard to know what to expect out of them. Just as easily as Rivers can go for 500 yards, the team could easily shit its pants at home against the Raiders. I think this will be a hard fought game, but I’m going with the safe bet in San Diego. Chargers 31, Raiders 20

Dallas Cowboys (2-3) at New York Giants (3-3), NYG by 4 – The Giants looked absolutely awful on MNF last night. Fortunately for them they get a home game against Matt Cassel in his first start as a Cowboy and a team that’s just barely treading water until Romo returns. Giants 27, Cowboys 21

Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (5-0), CAR by 3 – This is exactly the kind of game you’d expect a young, up-and-coming team like the Panthers to drop. Coming off an emotional statement win on the road, playing at home in primetime with the whole nation’s eyes on them, something they don’t have a whole lot of experience with in the last few years, and playing against an opponent that’s finding its offensive stride. But despite that, I’m going to go against my better judgment and put my faith in the Panthers, which I’ve been somewhat reluctant to do so far this year. To this point they’ve shown the ability to overcome a lot of different challenges, and maybe by beating back this Eagles team in primetime they’ll earn a bit more national respect as well. Panthers 27, Eagles 24

Baltimore Ravens (1-5) at Arizona Cardinals (4-2), ARZ by 7.5 – Shocking defeat for the Cardinals this week, but they should have no troubles with taking down the Ravens this week. Cardinals 20, Ravens 13

BYES: Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos

GAME OF THE WEEK – New York Jets (4-1) at New England Patriots (5-0), NE by 9 – I still don't know what to make of the Jets. They are 4-1 right now, but the list of teams they have played this season would all lose badly to the Patriots. The Browns, Colts, Dolphins and Redskins, there's not a good win on that list. Right now the Jets are one of 6 teams that look like they've got a playoff spot sewn up in the AFC in what could be the worst playoff race of all time. New York's spot is the one I would bet on being up for grabs after Thanksgiving though. The Patriots have looked somewhat close to unbeatable most of this season and I expect nothing different right here. NE Patriots 27, NY Jets 23

THURSDAY NIGHT – Seattle Seahawks (2-4) at San Francisco 49ers (2-4), SEA by 6 – If I were guessing which game on this week's schedule was game of the week coming into this year, this game would be a good bet to start, but right now it's a mess of a game. The Niners were written off by almost everyone and they fought back early, but they look like a team that is almost out of fight now. Seattle is scuffling right now, but I would still bet they can get their footing back and make the playoffs. But they need this game to make that happen. Seattle Seahawks 23, SF Niners 19

Buffalo Bills (3-3) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4) in London, BUF by 4.5 – The Bills are one of those teams trying to chase a wild card spot that the Jets currently hold. They can't afford to let this early morning London game throw them off track. The Jags are still the Jags and they still stink no matter what they are trying. Buffalo should be able to get this win. Buffalo Bills 25, Jacksonville Jaguars 20

Cleveland Browns (2-4) at St. Louis Rams (2-4), STL by 5 – The Browns have had a weird season so far this year. After back to back blowouts to start the year going in each direction, their last four games have all come down to one score, including three straight game-ending field goals. The Rams are also scuffling at a 2-4 start. If either of these teams will have real thoughts of making this season interesting for themselves or their fans they need to win here. I'll go out on a limb to take the upset, but the Browns need to get off to a fast start. They've been outscored 68-56 in the first half of games this year, compared to an 85-65 advantage in the second half of their last four games. UPSET!!! Cleveland Browns 23, St. Louis Rams 21

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-5), PIT by 2 – The Steelers are firing on all cylinders right now with two straight wins even without Ben Roethlisberger. The Chiefs are DOA at this point and should put up very little fight. Pittsburgh Steelers 24, KC Chiefs 21

Houston Texans (2-4) at Miami Dolphins (2-3), MIA by 4.5 – This game is bad. No matter who wins, it's whoever watches this game that loses. Miami does seem to have received a short burst of energy from their coaching change, but we'll see how long that lasts. Miami Dolphins 23, Houston Texans 21

Minnesota Vikings (3-2) at Detroit Lions (1-5), MIN by 2.5 – The Lions avoided another 0-16 season with their win last week against the hapless Bears. Now they can get back to being what they are this season. The Vikings will continue to improve as this season progresses towards the playoffs for them. Minnesota Vikings 24, Detroit Lions 23

Atlanta Falcons (5-1) at Tennessee Titans (1-4), ATL by 4 – Falcons good. Titans awful. Moving on. Atlanta Falcons 34, Tennessee Titans 14

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3) at Washington Redskins (2-4), WAS by 3.5 – The Redskins can keep in the race for the NFC East as sad as it is with a win this week. Tampa is just plain bad. Washington Redskins 24, TB Buccaneers 23

New Orleans Saints (2-4) at Indianapolis Colts (3-3), IND by 5 – The Colts need to win games like this even in their pathetic division to make the playoffs like they will do. They hand the Saints another loss here. Indy Colts 26, NO Saints 24

Oakland Raiders (2-3) at San Diego Chargers (2-4), SD by 4 – This is a mildly interesting game in that the winner will keep alive outside hopes to make the playoffs. I see the Chargers being that team much more easily than the Raiders. SD Chargers 24, Oakland Raiders 23

Dallas Cowboys (2-3) at New York Giants (3-3), NYG by 4 – The Cowboys are pathetic until Tony Romo gets back. There's no point in breaking down much of anything else. NY Giants 24, Dallas Cowboys 21

Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (5-0), CAR by 3 – This game is harder to pick than meets the eye. It would be a very NFC thing for the Eagles to find a way to eek out a win and for the Panthers to trip up on a trap game after beating the Seahawks in Seattle. I won't predict it, but I could easily see it happening. Carolina Panthers 24, Philly Eagles 21

Baltimore Ravens (1-5) at Arizona Cardinals (4-2), ARZ by 7.5 – The Cardinals are still a really good team. The Ravens still are not. Arizona Cardinals 30, Baltimore Ravens 20

GAME OF THE WEEK – New York Jets (4-1) at New England Patriots (5-0), NE by 9 – Looking at the Jets roster, I'm not sure why I (along with others) didn't have higher expectations for them coming into the season. Of course, that reason was probably Geno Smith but still. This is a loaded team on defense and offensively, they have a lot of weapons including a halfback playing the best ball of his career. I really want to pick the Jets here as the match-up really well with the Patriots, but I don't trust Fitzpatrick enough on the road. Patriots 21, Jets 14

Buffalo Bills (3-3) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4) in London, BUF by 4.5 – Even with EJ Manuel at quarterback, it would be extremely disappointing on the part of the Bills to lose this game. Bills 30, Jaguars 20

Cleveland Browns (2-4) at St. Louis Rams (2-4), STL by 5 – 2 of the weirdest teams in the NFL. Give me the home team. Rams 28, Browns 24

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-5), PIT by 2 – This game has potential to set records for all-time boredom with Alex Smith and Landry Jones playing QB. I guess I'll take the more talented Steelers, who are hanging in there without Roethlisberger. Steelers 23, Chiefs 7

Houston Texans (2-4) at Miami Dolphins (2-3), MIA by 4.5 – Dolphins will make it 2 in a row. Dolphins 31, Texans 23

Minnesota Vikings (3-2) at Detroit Lions (1-5), MIN by 2.5 – Tough game. I really want to go Lions here, but I think Bridgewater plays well and when he's playing well, this is a real tough Minnesota team. Vikings 38, Lions 31

Atlanta Falcons (5-1) at Tennessee Titans (1-4), ATL by 4 – As much as I want to go Titans here, I'll go Falcons to put up a 40 burger. Falcons 44, Titans 20

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3) at Washington Redskins (2-4), WAS by 3.5 – Two turnover machines at QB in this game. I'll go with the home squad. Redskins 17, Buccaneers 14

New Orleans Saints (2-4) at Indianapolis Colts (3-3), IND by 5 – Colts played big boy football for the first time in a long time last week and still couldn't stay competitive with the Patriots in the second half. I'm going to go with the Saints to win this game and somehow, someway keep themselves in the NFC wildcard race. UPSET! - Saints 34, Colts 31

Oakland Raiders (2-3) at San Diego Chargers (2-4), SD by 4 – C'mon, Chargers. Win one for Rivers. Chargers 27, Raiders 26

Dallas Cowboys (2-3) at New York Giants (3-3), NYG by 4 – I could easily see the Cowboys winning this, but I'll say the Giants bounce back and take this one. Giants 23, Cowboys 14

Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (5-0), CAR by 3 – The Eagles aren't a bad team, at least not as bad as I thought they would end up being a couple of weeks ago when that offense looked like a lost cause. It still kind of is a lost cause with Sam Bradford at quarterback, but that defense is playing some great football and they match-up very well with the Panthers. I'll go with the Panthers here only because they are at home, but it wouldn't surprise me if they took their first L. Eagles are not as bad as you would think. Panthers 23, Eagles 21

Baltimore Ravens (1-5) at Arizona Cardinals (4-2), ARZ by 7.5 – Ravens are trash and I don't know what to make of the Cardinals. Their offense has again this year stumbled once they played an above average defense and to lose to a Steelers team rotating Vick and Jones in at QB isn't a good look. They will likely win here but they need to stop shooting themselves in the foot. Cardinals 34, Ravens 28
