Week 6 NFL Picks and Discussion Thread!

Week six is already upon us, and the NFL is starting to take shape. It’s looking like we’re going to have a fairly predictable year, unless some teams go on runs in the second half of the season to pull themselves out from the heap of mediocre teams in this league.

Here are our games:

GAME OF THE WEEK – Carolina Panthers (4-0) at Seattle Seahawks (2-3), SEA by 7@Messiah will be happy to see the line has actually been increased in this game, haha. Seahawks are playing at home and it’s essentially do or die for them. They need to pick up some wins now If they want to have any hope of staying alive in the playoff race. Carolina’s going to have to drop one sooner or later, and while this game will probably be a knock down drag out like all their matchups in the last few years, it’s hard for me imagine the depleted offense of the Panthers coming in and snagging a victory from a desperate Seahawks team that’s beaten them time and time again these last few years. Seahawks 17, Panthers 10

THURSDAY – Atlanta Falcons (5-0) at New Orleans Saints (1-4), ATL by 3 – It’s still hard to believe how far the Saints have fallen over the last couple years. But in a home matchup against their arch rivals on a short week, I’m going to go against any logic here and say they’ve got what it takes to pull the upset out of their asses. UPSET! – Saints 27, Falcons 24

Denver Broncos (5-0) at Cleveland Browns (2-3), DEN by 4.5 – I think this is going to be a hard-fought contest. The Broncos don’t have a whole lot of offense, but that defense is stifling. If the Browns could consistently play offense like they did against Baltimore I’d be willing to take them here, but I don’t think they have what it takes to get past this defense. Broncos 16, Browns 9

Cincinnati Bengals (5-0) at Buffalo Bills (3-2), CIN by 3.5 – The Bengals have been on a roll so far this season, and look like one of the league’s best teams. But even the best teams lose at least a couple, and the Bills have a pretty solid homefield advantage with a good football team. This is going to be a tough battle, but I’m going to take the Bills to pull out the surprise win at home to give the Bengals their first loss. UPSET! – Bills 30, Bengals 20

Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-2), MIN by 3.5 – The Chiefs just look completely done, and they’re going on the road against a team with a good defense with a week of rest. What’s more, they lost their best player for the season. It’s over for them. Vikings 23, Chiefs 10

Houston Texans (1-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4), HOU by 1 – Neither of these teams could manage to beat the Colts WITHOUT Andrew Luck. Which one of them will manage to beat the other? It’s a complete toss up, so I’m going with the home team in a divisional matchup. UPSET! – Jaguars 20, Texans 14

Chicago Bears (2-3) at Detroit Lions (0-5), DET by 3 – I get that this is a divisional rivalry and they usually play each other and the Lions are at home, but the Bears have played at least some respectable football the last couple weeks whereas the Lions just look like they’ve completely given up on the season. Hard to imagine this team even winning a game as long as Caldwell and Lombardi are running things. UPSET! – Bears 24, Lions 13

Washington Redskins (2-3) at New York Jets (3-1), NYJ by 6 – The Jets come back off their bye week rested and ready to take on a Redskins team that nearly took down the Falcons. Clearly this is a feistier Washington team than we expected. But playing on the road against a well rested team is too much for them. Jets 20, Redskins 10

Arizona Cardinals (4-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2), ARZ by 3 – You have to think the Steelers’ season would be looking a lot different right now with Ben Roethlisberger under center. Right now, though, despite their come-from-behind MNF win, they’re just fodder for the rest of the teams on their schedule. The Cardinals will feast. Cardinals 35, Steelers 13

Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Tennessee Titans (1-3), TEN by 2.5 – What will the Dolphins look like after a bye with a brand new coach? It’s almost impossible to say, but it’s hard for me to pick any team in its first game with an interim coach. Titans 27, Dolphins 17

San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-0), GB by 10 – This Packers team is 5-0 for just the second time in the Super Bowl era, the first being in 2011. The major difference between this team and that of four years ago is that this team has a really impressive defense. If the Packers can avoid losing any more major players and keep playing the way they are, they’re in prime position for a Super Bowl run. Packers 34, Chargers 16

Baltimore Ravens (1-4) at San Francisco 49ers (1-4), BAL by 2.5 – How far these two teams have fallen since they met in the Super Bowl several years ago! The Ravens saved their season two weeks ago only to piss it away this last week against the Browns. Now these two teams are basically playing for draft position. I still like the Ravens over the Niners. Ravens 24, 49ers 20

New England Patriots (4-0) at Indianapolis Colts (3-2), NE by 8 – Andrew Luck or no Andrew Luck, the Patriots are going to be out for blood in this game after the Colts started all the Deflate scandal bullshit. This is going to be a laugher. Patriots 37, Colts 13

New York Giants (3-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-3), PHI by 3.5 – Philly/Giants games are always blood baths, especially in prime time. The Giants can really take a hold on the division with a win here, but the Eagles might finally be putting something together. I’ll take the home team, but I’m not solid on that pick at all. Eagles 30, Giants 24

BYES: Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

GAME OF THE WEEK – Carolina Panthers (4-0) at Seattle Seahawks (2-3), SEA by 7 – The Seahawks are undefeated at home this season and can't win a game on the road. Stop me if this sounds familiar? Seattle is great at home for sure, but I'm not sure they are invincible. I'm having trouble finding upsets this week and I'll go out on a limb here with this one since the Panthers are much more consistent. UPSET!!! Carolina Panthers 22, Seattle Seahawks 20

THURSDAY – Atlanta Falcons (5-0) at New Orleans Saints (1-4), ATL by 3 – The Falcons survived a scare last week and I think that will give Dan Quinn plenty to teach his team and re-focus them on a Saints team without an identity and ripe for the picking. Atlanta Falcons 30, NO Saints 22

Denver Broncos (5-0) at Cleveland Browns (2-3), DEN by 4.5 – This is an interesting game. It's strength vs strength and weakness vs weakness as the Browns 8th ranked offense faces the Broncos top ranked defense and Broncos 30th ranked rushing offense takes on the Browns 31st ranked rushing defense. In the end, I think Denver holds Josh McCown under 300 yards for the first time this year and Peyton Manning has his best game of the season to date. Denver Broncos 23, Cleveland Browns 20

Cincinnati Bengals (5-0) at Buffalo Bills (3-2), CIN by 3.5 – The Bills are quickly losing all the great mojo they began the year with and Cincy isn't losing any of theirs yet. Cincinnati is just too strong without a lot of weaknesses and Buffalo's warts are all beginning to show. Cincy Bengals 24, Buffalo Bills 21

Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-2), MIN by 3.5 – The Chiefs were struggling to hold everything together before, now without Jamaal Charles it will be impossible. The Vikings are starting to hit their stride and could be in the running for a wild card spot all year. Minnesota Vikings 23, KC Chiefs 21

Houston Texans (1-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4), HOU by 1 – This is an interesting game. I do think the Texans are the slightly better team, but with home-field advantage Jacksonville could pull this one out. UPSET!!! Jacksonville Jaguars 24, Houston Texans 23

Chicago Bears (2-3) at Detroit Lions (0-5), DET by 3 – A couple of weeks ago I said the Bears would get their first win against the Raiders. Well now it's time for them to repay the karmic favor. Detroit Lions 22, Chicago Bears 21

Washington Redskins (2-3) at New York Jets (3-1), NYJ by 6 – If you asked me to pinpoint how the Jets are 3-1 after a month of the season, I don't think I could do it, but I also can't deny they are playing pretty well and definitely better than Washington. NY Jets 23, Washington Redskins 17

Arizona Cardinals (4-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2), ARZ by 3 – The Steelers definitely would be a different team with Ben at QB the whole season, but as it is they are still in the thick of it. If they pick up one more win over the next three weeks they will still be .500 at the halfway point before Ben comes back. That's all they need when you consider 9-7 will be a wild card team. This week won't be that win though. Arizona Cardinals 27, Pittsburgh Steelers 21

Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Tennessee Titans (1-3), TEN by 2.5 – The Phins have a new coach, but interim coaches rarely turn their teams around. The Titans aren't very good, but probably better than Miami. Tennessee Titans 24, Miami Dolphins 20

San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-0), GB by 10 – The Chargers are always a very up and down team and this year is no different. The Packers are very consistent. Green Bay rolls easy. GB Packers 27, SD Chargers 21

Baltimore Ravens (1-4) at San Francisco 49ers (1-4), BAL by 2.5 – Rat birds got their comeuppance last week, but sadly they rebound here. Baltimore Ravens 26, SF Niners 21

New England Patriots (4-0) at Indianapolis Colts (3-2), NE by 8 – The Colts can only beat AFC South opponents. The Patriots are certainly not that. NE Patriots 30, Indy Colts 22

New York Giants (3-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-3), PHI by 3.5 – It's the NFC Least, whatever can complicate things as much as possible will happen. Philly Eagles 24, NY Giants 23

GAME OF THE WEEK – Carolina Panthers (4-0) at Seattle Seahawks (2-3) - Seattle

THURSDAY – Atlanta Falcons (5-0) at New Orleans Saints (1-4) - Atlanta

Denver Broncos (5-0) at Cleveland Browns (2-3) - Broncos

Cincinnati Bengals (5-0) at Buffalo Bills (3-2) - Buffalo

Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-2)- Minnesota

Houston Texans (1-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4) - Jacksonville

Chicago Bears (2-3) at Detroit Lions (0-5) - Lions. The Lions will probably blow it and lose by 20.

Washington Redskins (2-3) at New York Jets (3-1) - Jets

Arizona Cardinals (4-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) - Arizona. The Cardinals feast on bad QB play. They're coming for you Vick.

Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Tennessee Titans (1-3) - Tennessee

San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-0) - Packers. Chargers traveling cross country to Lambeau, no bueno.

Baltimore Ravens (1-4) at San Francisco 49ers (1-4) - Baltimore. The #1 pick in the draft is going to come down to the Lions and the 49ers on Dec 27th.

New England Patriots (4-0) at Indianapolis Colts (3-2) - Pats.

New York Giants (3-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) - Eagles. This is actually a big divisional game and the Eagles have found some life in their offense.

GAME OF THE WEEK – Carolina Panthers (4-0) at Seattle Seahawks (2-3), SEA by 7 – This is going to be a slug-fest. People are relying too much on their past accomplishments if they still think the Seahawks are a shoe-in for the playoffs. While I don't doubt that they still have one of the best defenses in the NFL, because they do, their offense is more of a lost cause than it ever has been. The play-calling and play design is shoddy, the offensive line is horrific, and Russell Wilson does not do a good job at seeing the field on a consistent basis. The Panthers match up well with them as Lotulelei and Short should control the LOS. However, I don't think they have enough playmakers on offense to do much against the Seahawks defense and that will ultimately be the difference. Seahawks 17, Panthers 9

THURSDAY – Atlanta Falcons (5-0) at New Orleans Saints (1-4), ATL by 3 – I really want to pick the Saints here, given that they are at home. However, I think it is time to accept that the Saints flat-out just suck. They got demolished by the Eagles last week and struggled getting past the Weeden-led Cowboys. Even with a dinged up Julio Jones, I think the Falcons have too much for the Saints, who don't match up nearly as well with them as the Redskins did. Falcons 34, Saints 17

Denver Broncos (5-0) at Cleveland Browns (2-3), DEN by 4.5 – Josh McCown falls back down to Earth this week. Broncos 21, Browns 20

Cincinnati Bengals (5-0) at Buffalo Bills (3-2), CIN by 3.5 – I like the Bills at home here, even with a nicked up Tyrod Taylor, I think they have what it takes to give the Bengals their first loss. UPSET - Bills 23, Bengals 21

Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) at Minnesota Vikings (2-2), MIN by 3.5 – Vikings should be disappointed in themselves if they lose this game. Vikings 26, Chiefs 13

Houston Texans (1-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4), HOU by 1 – When in doubt, take the home team. UPSET! - Jaguars 27, Texans 19

Chicago Bears (2-3) at Detroit Lions (0-5), DET by 3 – Lions have to win eventually, right? Lions 26, Bears 24

Washington Redskins (2-3) at New York Jets (3-1), NYJ by 6 – It's hard to trust a team quarterbacked by Ryan Fitzpatrick, but I have more faith in that than Kirk Cousins on the road. Redskins aren't a bad team, though. Will be a good one. Jets 17, Redskins 13

Arizona Cardinals (4-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2), ARZ by 3 – Vick against the Cardinals D has a lot of LOL potential. Cardinals 30, Steelers 21

Miami Dolphins (1-3) at Tennessee Titans (1-3), TEN by 2.5 – Titans aren't a good team and I think the interim coach will have them motivated to play, even if only for a week. UPSET! - Dolphins 24, Titans 20

San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-0), GB by 10 – Do people not know who this Chargers team is? They lose games they shouldn't lose and win games they should win ALL THE TIME. Gordon will have his breakout game, Rivers will throw for 300+ yards and 3 TDs, and the weird ass Chargers will somehow win this game. Bank on it. UPSET! - Chargers 34, Packers 31

Baltimore Ravens (1-4) at San Francisco 49ers (1-4), BAL by 2.5 – Both teams suck. Give me the home team. UPSET! - 49ers 28, Ravens 24

New England Patriots (4-0) at Indianapolis Colts (3-2), NE by 8 – I would be surprised if the Colts won this game. Patriots 38, Colts 20

New York Giants (3-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (2-3), PHI by 3.5 – Sam Bradford blows. I'll take the Eagles because they are home but it could go either way. Eagles 26, Giants 21

I openly admit that I think the Lions suck this year, but this comment is just an overstatement if I have ever seen one. I also admit my dislike for Caldwell and Lombardi, but the Lions won 11 games last year (yes a bit of an anomaly) and have lost to 5 legit playoff contenders this year. I don't think the Lions will win many games this year, but don't act like this team could go 0-16 or something. I have seen an 0-16 team and this is not even close. The schedule lightens up in the 2nd half and we will still end up around 4+ wins.
