Sweden the #2 country for rape

Postby Circled Square » Jun 26, '15, 4:01 pm

Sweden now has the second highest number of rapes in the world, after South Africa, which at 53.2 per 100,000. Statistics now suggest that 1 out of every 4 Swedish women comes out to be the victim of rape. If you look at the number of rapes, however, the increase is even worse. In 1975, there were only 421 rapes reported to the police – in 2014, it was 6,620. That is an increase of 1,472%. It would seem Sweden is a much more dangerous place for women in the world.

Sweden has the highest rate of rape in Europe. In 2013, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå), there were 63 rape cases per 100,000 population reported to the Swedish police.

According to rape crisis advocates in Sweden, 1 out of 3 Swedish women have been sexually assaulted by the time they leave their teens. During the first half of 2013, more than 1,000 Swedish women reported being raped by Muslim immigrants in the Stockholm; over 300 of those were under the age of 15.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you find it weird how a Scandinavian country could be #2 in rape?

I remember finding this out while reading "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Definitely an alarming statistic, but being completely unfamiliar with the country (other than having been in the Stockholm airport once) I can't possibly give any insight into what makes it such a common occurrence there.

It also could simply be that they have the highest number of reported rapes vs unreported which sheds things in a different light. I find it hard to believe some of the Middle Eastern countries aren't higher on the list.

The way you worded this topic sounds like something Borat would say, so I didn't initially click it. Now that I have, I'm disgusted and sad.. It was better as Borat. :(

true, but then if the law doesn't call it rape then it wouldn't be reported as such.

I thought something similar for Sweden, maybe their definition of rape is much broader so other crimes that may not be reported as rape in other countries is defined as rape in Sweden resulting in higher "rape" statistics

True, maybe they call rape what we would call shoplifting.

Seems you're right. In 2005, Sweden broadened the legal definition of "rape", which explains the significant increase in rapes from 2004 to 2014.
