OK this one, unlike TNA, I'm really watching for the first time ever. Let's see how it stacks up.
I liked their little creating excellence video before the show. They showed off all the top WWE guys who started in ROH, they're selling on the quality of talent they have and produce. Can't knock that. It helps elevate their cred with new fans. If I'm correct this is their first Destination America show.
I don't get why they started the show with some ugly ass guys named the Briscoe brothers making a senseless promo. Best foot forward there? Not the best impression to make right off the bat to the casual fan. They didn't even roll the opening credits before these guys. I was a little worried about the quality of the product after seeing this.
The opening credits aren't horrible and their audience is on fucking fire. It has the TNA feel were it's a bit too dark at times though.
The opening match is Kushida vs Ferrera. Ferrera is white bread man, but Kushida has a kind of interesting selection of ring attire. I like that the fans threw streamers in the ring for him. It looked cool. Also they do a tale of the tape which is nice to see. The match is not bad, I don't feel like they have a lot of chemistry. Ferrera does a cool dive through the mid rope into a DDT. Kushida wasn't selling shit, and he played to the crowd way too much. Although his baseball pitch punch was pretty cool. Kushida wins with a chicken wing type submission. The match wasn't very good but the crowd is super hot for him.
Kazarian cut a decent promo after the match.
Watanabe vs Young was pretty good. Young has a very old school look and has some pretty good skills, same as Watanabe. I wish they had gone a bit more strong style. I'm sure they could have done it very well.
BJ Whitmer is pretty good on the mic. I liked the whole young boy idea and how he had Coby Corino (a small kid) fight Moose. He got his ass handed to him and really put Moose over as a powerhouse. Steve Corino however, Cobys' dad and the commentator, did a super shitty job showing concern for his son getting demolished.
Briscoes vs Dijak and some other guy was pretty damn good. The Briscoes are solid, Mark was my favorite but Jack had some impressive moments. His double arm hook reverse tombstone jump up piledriver was sweet. The thing that really made this part of the show great was Jay Lethal as the guest commentator. His voice is awesome and he was just perfect. He said everything he needed to say. He put his opponents over without hurting himself. He put himself over, he put the title over. And he had some amusing quips to boot. This is a great example of how commentary can improve anything in the ring. Also it's nice to see a talent who can do it. Even in the WWE most wrestlers fail miserably when they have to go out on commentary to observe their rival in the ring.
I can see why the Briscoes seem to be the top stars. Still they should have eased the new fans into them. Especially since their look and promo are a bit off putting at first sight.
Random Thoughts: The Commentators are pretty decent. I'd love to see Lethal behind the booth when he retires. Their ring is super fucking loud, it's very distracting for a while. I hope the production values improve in time. This a TV show, they need to step it up a tiny bit at least. Overall a pretty enjoyable show.
