Fantastic NFL trivia question

Postby The Legend » May 19, '15, 6:58 am

There's 32 head coaches in the NFL. All but one of them can be traced back to one man's coaching tree. Two part question: Who is the one coach whose coaching tree is almost solely responsible for today's NFL coaches? Who is the one coach that can't be traced back to this man?

Chip Kelly is correct. Bill Parcells is not.

Hint: Parcells is in this man's greater coaching tree. Three coaching generations removed.

That is a really awesome statistic though. 31 of 32 coaches with some sort of tie back to Paul Brown. Shows how influential the guy was.

It does. For those interested in NFL history, I heard this morning that the NFL Network is going to do "A Football Life" on Paul Brown this season that's currently scheduled to air on November 6 (the day after the Browns and Bengals play on Thursday Night this season).

Basically every "coaching tree" you hear spoke of in the NFL today is actually just a limb on Paul Brown's coaching tree. Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, Tony Dungy, Buddy Ryan, Marty Schottenheimer, Bill Parcells, Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher, Bill Belichick. They all tie back to Paul Brown.

NFL.com's Chris Wesseling wrote a nice piece about Brown, Walsh, and the Ohio River Offense (which we know today as the West Coast Offense). Worth the read if you have the time.

Also, my initial guesses were Walsh and Chip Kelly.
