Do I take my old job back?

Postby HardcoreLegend » Apr 29, '15, 5:57 am

For the past 4 years I've worked 2 part time jobs, one in a relatives restaurant and one in a pharmacy. At the end of last year I got fed up at the restaurant, I wasn't getting as many shifts as I wanted, my pay wasn't too good and the owners attitude was awful, I just felt undervalued. So I quit. Because they are relatives of mine it came as a shock to them and they asked me to stay but I said no. When I quit I told them I planned on finding a new job somewhere, something a bit more solid, but that hasn't happened.

So for the past 5 months I've just been working one part time job at the pharmacy, doing an odd shift at the restaurant when they have been really stuck for staff. Money hasn't really been a problem for me, but I have a few holidays coming up and don't want to just want to eat into my savings on these trips away. The thought had crossed my mind about maybe going back to the restaurant.

Last weekend I got a phonecall from my relative, the owner of the restaurant asking if I wanted my job back. It was strange how I'd just been thinking about it during the week then I get that phonecall! I told her I would think about it and get back in touch with her. Now while on the surface it seems simple enough to take the job back, I'm reluctant to as I wonder how long until I'm not happy again?

If I do go back, I plan on setting some terms- making sure I have set days, a pay rise, etc- but will that be enough to make me happy there?

I would say that there's no shame in going back since these people are your relatives. However, if you're still looking for another job, be upfront with them and let them know that you're only taking the job until you find something that's more in line with what you're looking for.

Don't be an entitled cunt with your demands and you should be fine. If she called you you must have been a 7/10+ employee man.

If you hate the job, you're better off finding something else.
If you feel you were unhappy due to money/days/shifts, and you felt undervalued, then definitely make sure you explain that you just felt undervalued and that it made you unhappy. Maybe they'll have something more valuable for you to actually do.. and if they don't, you're saving time by denying their request.

But only you can say what will or won't make you happy. Did you hate every minute you were there? Did customers make you want to go on a killing spree? These are important questions for you to answer. If the job wasn't that bad to you but you just got unhappy because it was shit pay, well, make sure you speak up.

I sent a text to my relative/former boss explaining how I was going away so wouldn't be able to work until June so if they needed to get someone else in to work then I understood. I didn't hear anything back but my dad had seen this relative the other day and said she had an attitude about the text I sent her. So now I just feel like saying fuck you, that's exactly why I had reservations going back in the first place.

I'm going in tomorrow to speak about some back pay they owe me so I'll see if anything gets mentioned.
