Do you set yourself a budget?

Postby HardcoreLegend » Feb 11, '15, 5:21 pm

Does anyone budget their money? Since I still live at home I don't have to worry about all the bills and when they'll be coming out (I do contribute but it's not something I have to thinks about) therefore I don't need to budget my monthly spends. However, just after Christmas I quit one of my jobs so I no just work one part time job meaning I have to be a bit more careful with my spends.

Do you all set yourselves budgets?

I set myself an ingenious budget that stems from having no money at all.

We live by a fairly strict budget, when you live in your own place you kind of have to really, you cut your cloth accordingly, in my experience at least. I'm always on the look out for ways of saving money, coupons, cash back etc. I do a weekly meal plan to keep food costs down, and I shop around for the best energy tariffs. All bills & rent get paid within days of my OH getting paid so then all we have to worry about for the rest of the month is food shopping. I also like to have a small 'buffer' amount saved in the event of any unexpected expenses.

It would be nice to be able to spend money without thinking twice about it but to be honest unless you're super rich I don't really think it's possible without ending up in some sort of debt. I'm a thrifty person anyway though and I get a real sense of satisfaction from saving money where I can even if we don't necessarily need to, I hate paying more for a product or service when I could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere.

I've got a nice bit of money in the bank and besides weekly shopping and a few bills going out, it's looking rosy.

Sorry, probably doesn't help but I remember when I was out of work a year plus ago, and having to live off JSA, but like Twister said, it's a case of looking out for bargains when you do need to buy.

After I got Sober and reunited with my Wife I finally learned to budget my money correctly lol. Now that we have two kids we definately adhere to a tight budget even though we both make great money we still stretch each dollar as far as we can.

I don't really have a written down budget, but I generally limit my spending outside of necessities (food, rent, car payments, utilities, internet bill, etc.). Once I'm married, and especially once children come into the picture, then I'll have to get a lot tighter with the way I create my budget.
