What is the most extreme weather you've ever experienced?

Postby Everlong » Jan 08, '15, 11:09 am

With much of the midwest engulfed in a deep freeze right now, I figured it'd be interesting to see what the most extreme weather people here have experienced is.

The coldest I've ever felt was temperatures without windchill in the negative 20s fahrenheit, with windchill probably below negative 40. I went outside for like a minute just to say I did it then went "FUCK THIS" and went back inside the rest of the day :lol. The hottest temperature I've experienced was probably about 115 or 120 fahrenheit, both in the Badlands in South Dakota and down in the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

In terms of crazy weather though, I've been through some pretty crazy snowstorms. We once got like two feet of snow within an 18 hour period in Milwaukee, that was just a few years ago. That was crazy. I've also driven through the tail end of a hurricane... definitely the scariest driving experience I've ever had.

Our damp wee island doesn't get much extreme weather, the first thing to come to mind for me was Hurricane Bawbag.

Most extreme weather can mean so many different things and I've encountered a lot of them.

First of all there was nothing more uncomfortable to be out in than last winter when we had about a 2 week span when temperatures were always between -10 and -20 degrees farenheit. Some other more extreme weather though, I vividly recall a summer thunderstorm where I was driving out in the country and I had to outrun a dust sprout tornado that popped up in the cornfield next to me. I also remember trying to play in a youth baseball tournament when the heat index was something like 119 - another completely miserable experience. I remember a blizzard where I went into work for a night shift where I was at the time at about 6 pm. there was no snow on the ground. No snow in the forecast. I came out of my office (no windows where I was) to six inches of snow on my car and an unplowed highway to drive home in.

We get insane snow here in NL. I'm gonna try and dig up some pictures to show y'all. One time last year with whatever way the wind was blowing I had to shovel 8+feet of snow out of my driveway

Hurricane Sandy would definitely be my answer to this question. Fifty-foot trees falling, power lines coming down, entire homes flooded, no power for months. The worst part was that not a lot of people took it seriously at first because the last time we were supposed to have a huge hurricane it wound up just being a day of heavy rain.

My town wasn't horribly affected. We had some flooding and we lost electricity, but our houses were still intact. My buddy who lived on the south shore, on Long Beach, had his entire house taken away by water. Any town close to the shore was just annihilated. It was disturbing to see.

Yesterday the weather here went from really windy, to clear blue skies, to dark clouds with rain, to blue skies with sun shining through, to black clouds with SNOW, back to rain. Typical British weather, but not quite a tsunami or hurricane.
