Not a big Star Wars fan but I love JJ Abrams so ill definatley be seeing this. Good teaser.

Edit: Also, does anyone else hope this is all they release? Its Star Wars so the movie is going to make a butt load of money no matter what. Or at least I hope they dont show the classic cast in any of the trailers. Too many trailers these days show too much. This teaser did a perfect job of hyping people up without spoiling anything.

Is Benedict Cumberbatch still claiming he's not in it?

Looks alright, I still can't shake off the doubts as to whether it'll be any good though.

There's a 95% chance people will bitch incessantly about it for years after it comes out.

Absolutely, Star Wars is probably the most beloved film saga ever. This film isn't going to please everyone.

I'm approaching it with a cautious optimism at this point - I fucking love Star Wars but there's been three attempts now to recapture the magic of the original trilogy and they've all been shite. This time we've got a different director and the benefit of learning from the mistakes that were made in episodes 1-3, but I'm still struggling to get hyped.

I've been hurt by Star Wars before, and I'm scared to love again.

It doesn't really sound like him that much. More likely that it's Max von Sydow, who's actually supposed to be in it.

I agree with Porkchop, in that I'm skeptical about whether these new films will be any good. A big part of that is that Abrams makes really generic action films and while I don't hate his work, I have serious doubts it can rise to the heights required to live up to the original Star Wars trilogy. That being said, these films will not be as hated as the Prequels. Those weren't hated just because they didn't live up to the originals. Or because fanboys are impossible to please. The reason people still hate on them is because there was so much hype behind them and they wound up being completely inept.

Those weren't just disappointing films. They were badly made films. Most of the story was something that wasn't immediately interesting to viewers and something that fans had never wanted to see. None of the characters have any personality: just try and describe any of the characters without mentioning their job or appearance. The dialogue was poor. It was shot very poorly. There was barely any creativity or movement to it. The acting performances were terrible, largely because they used so much CGI that the actors couldn't react to the things that were supposed to be around them. I could go on and on in detail about the myriad of things those films got wrong.

I'm not sure if Abrams can make a great film, but he's well able to make a watchable film. There's no way that these new movies won't surpass the prequels.

As for the teaser trailer, I don't really have any reaction to it, because it didn't tell us anything. It was just stuff we already knew about the new films. We knew the Millennium Falcon would be in the film, we new Tatooine would be in it. It just makes me wonder what the point of the teaser trailer is. The only thing we've learned from it is that the new lightsabers look shit.

Oh, we also learned (already) that these films will be shot better than the prequels, but I don't think that was ever in doubt.

Honestly, the most important detail about the new movie for me is that Lawrence Kasdan wrote it. That's the reason I'm expecting it to be good.

So if that's one lense flare in approx. 1 minute and thirty seconds, how many would that be in a two hour film ... carry the one ... too many.

It's a decent looking trailer. It was cool seeing the Millennium Falcon. I liked the lightsaber sword, although I'm not sure why a lightsaber would need a cross-guard. There's not really a lot of meat to the trailer so it's hard to really gauge any sort of opinion. I'm not really a JJ Abrams fan, and I've been pretty apathetic to a new Star Wars film in general. We'll see I guess.

Portions of the film will also be shot on Kodak Vision3 250D 5207 65mm film stock (accompanied by the amazing IMAX MSM cameras and Hasselblad lenses), so it will be the most technically impressive of all Star Wars films. And yes, vastly superior to the prequel trilogy, which, in all honestly, used equipment that was in its technological infancy. The film will also be distributed to specific theatres for IMAX 70mm projection (much like Interstellar this year), so I'm assuming the most hardcore of Star Wars films will see it in its definitive print and format. And it should be amazing, theatrically.

Even though a project like this goes through such a heavy digital intermediate process, I'm still glad J.J. Abrams is espousing photochemical film as the way to go. There's still something organically beautiful to it, even if this film will ultimately be edited, colour graded, and rendered digitally. A project with this amount of resources and money will get the most out of what contemporary photochemical film can produce, and that's an amazingly exciting thought.

But the big question is... have you actually watched Star Wars yet?

I remember you saying that you had no interest in watching it, which is a shame as it's easily the most legendary film saga of all time.

Yes, I watched the original trilogy about a month back. While they were technically impressive, widely imaginative (at least for its time) and creative works, they're not something I am keen to revisit anytime in the future. I have never been a fan of science fiction fantasy - I much prefer the hard or more metaphysical additions to the genre that strive for more appreciable realism, but that is simply personal preference, and not necessarily a denouncement of Star Wars. I can see why they are held in such high esteem, however. I might get to see the prequel trilogy soon, but I am in no real rush.
