The Louis van Great era begins with the 'prestigious' International Champions Cup..

Not watched the game but seems it was a game that saw each side dominate one half and slack off the other. Great to hear Blackett had a good game, think he could get gametime under LVG. Left footed, seems comfortable on the ball from what I've seen in the other pre-season games, more of him please! Rooney was probably smitten after FINALLY getting the armband, would have been a picture seeing his face in the locker-room with the armband going elsewhere!

Credit to LVG - could have easily shipped off players but has taken time to assess them before deciding which one to bin. Unlike Moyes last year who couldn't seem to decide, fully expecting transfer activity (out more likely than in) before August 12th.

Sterling seems to have been their star performer and didn't realise Lambert's penalty streak ended when he missed vs Milan. If I was Rodgers, I'd be praying Sturridge stays fit for a long period and/or he signs a striker (proven) to keep him company.

Pretty much summed the game up. Sterling and Coutinho terrorized United's back three in the first half and they probably just did enough to be deserving of the lead at half time. Second half seemed to begin more of the same until Rodgers and Van Gaal made their subs and United began playing good football - lucky to hit us with a two minute double-salvo and the fact it all happened so fast seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Liverpool players. Positives for both teams though and it was a good match to wrap up excellent pre-season tours for the both of them.

Liverpool need another decent striker (I'd say world class but I'm realistic enough to know that won't happen) to serve as cover for Sturridge if they want to compete again - they'll definitely not be scoring the same amount of goals this season but they're not short of creativity. Lambert barely touched the ball last night and he's not really competition for Sturridge, he's more of a last 10 minute 'plan b' type of role should we be desperate for a goal.

United have a good enough squad as it is to challenge, they were shit last season but they did win the league the season before that with the same set of players. They definitely need a decent experienced centre-back though, the likes of Jones/Evans/Smalling aren't good enough to play as a back 3 - they're not used to getting pulled out wide and against players like Sterling they'll be punished.

I can't really see anyone out there for them to sign. Remy has shown he can score goals in the PL but they pulled out of that one with reasons unknown depending on what you believe (Remy had a heart problem to Liverpool backed out because they wanted to shift Borini but weren't able to) but if they can keep Sturridge fit, have a viable option as back up then they'll still score a decent amount of goals but not as many as last season.

On Liverpool related news, Reina's joined Bayern Munich to warm their bench as he ain't dislodging Neuer anytime soon and Rodgers seems determined to make sure he doesn't get a chance vs. Mignolet due to Reina's comments last summer whilst at Napoli. A shame tbh, he was a rock for Liverpool in his prime but think he could have been treated abit better than not to play at all during their pre-season.

Jones seems to have had a 'mare, rushes in so quickly that he either commits a foul or pulls a hamstring. Smalling is a defender I like alot more, Evans seems to be playing better under LVG and Tyler Blackett is another promising one. Vermalaen could be off to Barcelona and I can't see Hummels joining so might have to stick with what we got which if it is then we need a DM to protect the back four.

Ezequiel Lavezzi has been "enjoying" his holidays it seems. Search Lavezzi on Twitter. Not ideal for children viewing.

I disagree with LVG's way of working this window, waiting 11 days before the start of the season before shipping out the unwanted and bringing a few more faces in could really mess the team dynamic, theres a reason why it is best to get transfer business done early on so you can push on with the team and have them gel together quickly.

On Unite's formation, I really think that a team with quality wingers could easily punish them if they keep the same back 3, Smalling, Evans & Jones are no way near good enough to cover the back four zone, The outside two must be mobile and have good agility.

I can see United beating teams with weaker forward lines but really struggling against the quality opposition, players like Eden Hazard will have a field day drifting around the front line pulling the 3 centre backs out of position.

The reason why this formation works in Italy is because the tempo of the game is slower but in England I can't see them getting found out because the most important players in the team are the wingbacks as they have to be up and down all game giving the width and I can't see any of united's players being able to do that was 90 minutes.

It'll be really interesting to see how it goes for them.

Liverpool could be this season's Tottenham... fantastic season their best players goes for alot of money and then the managers buys 6/7 players to replace him without buying a player who is an out and out replacement, BR may have to change his system to make it work.

My biggest issue with Liverpool this season is that they haven't sorted out the biggest problem which is their defence, Liverpool conceded way to many stupid goals from defensive mistakes, they've brought in Emre Can who is a man mountain who'll sit behind Gerrard & Henderson but they really need to replace Johnson who is nowhere near the quality needed to challenge for the title and left back needs to be looked at along with another stand out centreback because Skrtel & Agger are not consistent enough.

Marković, Sterling & Sturridge will be the key to any success Liverpool have this season, that is where the goals are going to have to come from (Lambert may get a few aswell). The thing liverpool have in these three is speed and speed has become a huge part of the game and all 3 have ALOT of it.

So Rangers beat Hibs today 2-1 AET in the Petrofac Training Cup, I'd say that's pretty encouraging, we should be ready for Hearts on Sunday!

Howard Webb called on his retirement today & very rarely will you see his name mentioned with anything but insults from football fans but I'll never have a bad word to say about him after the way he handled Fabrice Muamba's collapse, many ref's would of waited for the ball to have stopped before checking to see if he was okay but his quick recognition after seeing him on the ground played a huge huge part of why Fabrice didn't lose his life on the pitch that night.

Compared to last season, I'd say we're ahead of schedule in terms of transfer business. We've brought in Shaw, unexpectedly brought in Herrera as a forward, progressive midfield player and LVG has been able to judge the remaining squad. Moyes did that but lacking any philosophy, had no real design on what he wanted to do with the squad. LVG has made his decisions and I believe it'll be sooner than later that he ships out of the players he doesn't want or he can't give them gametime. We need a CB and a DM. I'd say we're most likely to get the latter than the former.

Shocked about Webb's retirement - he must be getting good money to give up his job for what is pretty much an office job and more behind the scenes. I'm sure Fergie called him to give him a pat on the back for his service lol.

But no on a serious note, as a fellow Rotherhamer, proud of what he's achieved and like Romo said, the way he handled the whole Muamba incident deserves the most respect, never mind any refereeing decision he should or should not have made.

Celtic dumped out of the CL qualifying stage by Legia Warsaw. 6-1, lol.

Scary to think that their fans actually believe they'd do well in the Premiership.

How fucking tragic must it feel to be a Celtic fan? The only thing they have to really look forward too in a season is the Champions League and they don't even have that this year. They literally have nothing to play for now, nothing to look forward too. Sure they'll win the league but nobody gives a fuck as the SPL is a joke.

As for Webb I agree it's a shame he's retired as he's one of the actual good referee's. I'll always remember when Bradford played Villa and Webb actually letting Hanson jump for the ball rather than penalizing him every two seconds like the football league officials do.

Wow. At this rate, Ronny Deila is David Moyes Mk II. All he needs is to fuck up their title defence, come 7th and ask his team to throw in 81 crosses vs. Aberdeen.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a beauty last night to help the MLS Allstars beat Bayern Munich 2-1, Guardiola spat his dummy out at the end of the game and walked off moaning about a few tackles but the MLS were fantastic and the crowd was nothing short of 10/10

Not that I think there's any truth to this one, it's still pretty hilarious to see Liverpool fans lose their minds over it. The amount of deluded idiots on social media (for all clubs, in truth) is comical.

- In other news every Premiership ground will be included on FIFA 15 which I find pretty cool. I wish they'd do it for every club though, Valley Parade is a stadium fitting of video game glory.

MLS All Stars beat Bayern 2-1 last night, and Pep was a class A dick to Caleb Porter, manager of the All Stars. He went up to shake his hand and Pep wagged his finger at him. He was also telling some Bayern players to walk off before saluting the crowd and swapping jerseys, including Muller, but Muller thankfully told him no. It's all because of a "rough" tackle on Schweinsteiger, which wasn't even the manager's fault. Lost a lot of respect for Pep, this is a USA showcase for fuck's sake, and in a friendly you do this? Dick.

Oh yeah I agree, but with Benzema recently signing a new 5 year deal they might be deterred. I love the Liverpool way of doing business though - linked with Falcao, Reus and Cavani, end up signing Grant Holt.

Isn't that done already? I thought that would be a given, especially for the PL.

Falcao link to Liverpool? Brings back memories of when Cavani was linked with Manchester United even though we've got RVP, Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez plus Will Keane so yeah, good luck with that Cavani.

On Pep, not a surprise in the sense that with the type of football he wants his teams to play that he'd get upset if his team was getting rough treatement and tbf, in a pre-season friendly, you hardly expect crunching tackles to be happening and if Schweinsteiger is out for a while (don't think he is) you can understand why he reacted so strongly but apparently they had a handshake in the tunnel.
