Boyhood

For those of you who haven't heard of this yet, Boyhood is a Richard Linklater film that came out recently. The film takes place over a 12 year time span, but the film is unique in that it was also filmed over a 12 year period. So you get to see the cast age realistically. It's a bit of a gimmick, but it's a really effective gimmick that really adds to the experience.

It's a coming of age film, and I've long had a soft spot for those. And getting to see these children actually come of age as you watch the movie only helps to make the characters seem even more genuine.

There's a lot of other things going for the film too though. It's almost 3 hours long, and that length would often bother me in a film, but there really aren't any pacing problems here. The story is so immersive that it could have kept going and I wouldn't have minded.

The characters and situations in the film all appear very real, which is one of its biggest strengths. The dialogue really seemed very unscripted and a lot of times when you felt like some character was drifting towards some common movie trope, they'd end up veering off in a different direction. In fact all the characters were very three-dimensional and complicated. Even the more minor ones. I think that should make the film interesting to watch back, despite its length.

Anyone else see this? If not, I'd urge you all to go. It's as good as the critics are saying.

I'm a huge fan of Linklater and have been waiting for this movie for years. Absolutely going to see this the second it comes to theaters near me.
