Game of Thrones - The Pro's and Con's Game (No Spoilers!!)

Postby Headlesspete » Jun 15, '14, 4:58 am

I always thought nothing would surpass Lost as my #1 TV show, but this season of Game of Thrones has finally swayed me. Awesome characters, amazing actors, fantastic sets and some of the most shocking storylines and plot twists. Its just an all around amazing show!

But, as with every TV show, it has its Pro's and Con's, so lets list some of them, and you can add your own.

Pro's
- Tyrian is possibly the most awesome character ever seen on TV.
- The show is filled with numerous plot twists that most of the time catch you off guard. From the Red Wedding to the recent Red Viper vs The Mountain battle, those shocking moments never fail to stun me.
- The special effects are incredible, and the budget for the show at times makes me feel like I'm watching a film.

Con's
- Daenerys story has stalled for some time, and it feels like were just bidding time until she makes her move across the sea, meaning a lot of her TV time feels dull and drags compared to all the other plots.
- Jon Snow is one of the most boring characters in the show, and it feels like he's the least developed since the start of the show.
- The Sam and Gilly / Bran storyline's bore me, and i normally watch them just hoping they hurry up as they seem tedious to the overall show.

Pros

-Martin (and the show) do the best job of any book/show I've ever seen of handling multiple storylines with multiple characters and keeping it engaging. Despite the sheer mass of characters, it almost never feels overwhelming to keep track of everything going on.

-You mentioned the big plot twists and deaths. What really makes me appreciate this moment is that unlike other shows (COUGH THE WALKING DEAD COUGH) these aren't used as cheap thrills to hook viewers, but as ways to advance the storyline in a brand new direction.

-The writing and character development is simply fantastic. Martin is outstanding at creating unique characters that you really care about.

-There are actually great female characters, which it seems like you never get in pop culture.

-They've had some fantastic acting performances in the series so far.

CONS

-Dany fucking sucks, but I think that's kind of the point of her, haha. But yeah I'm with you, the way her story just completely stalls in Meereen is super boring. Hopefully that gets resolved in the books soon.

-There are a couple interesting characters who really start to stall after having a great first few books. I won't mention names so that I don't spoil it, although it has already started to happen with one.

I'm not sure why you and Steve hate Jon Snow so much, I love his story :lol But rest assured, he is already on the path to becoming a badass.

^^ It's not just the two of us, Tim. Jon Snow isn't a well liked character, particularly on the show. Because along with being one of the dullest characters with the least dimension, he's also played by one of the worst actors on the show. The guy shows no emotion and no passion and just constantly looks like he's in a bit of a sulk. Plus there's very little going on in his story until Dance with Dragons anyway. I'm actually worried about the actor managing to rise to the challenge when his material gets more interesting.

Here are my own pros and cons.

Pros:
- There's a lot of unpredictability; you never know exactly where things are going to end up.
- There's a huge and interesting cast of characters.
- Martin writes political intrigue extremely well and everything that takes place in King's Landing is gold.
- There are some extremely effective emotional moments.
- Martin writes a great villain. Littlefinger, the Boltons, Tywin and Cersei Lannister are really compelling characters.
- The world is interesting and has a rich history. I always enjoy learning about the Mad King and the Targaryens.
- The fantasy aspects are used sparingly, which keeps them feeling fantastical.

Cons:
- The actors for Dany & Jon Snow fucking suck.
- The characters of Dany & Jon Snow suck too.
- In general, the further you get from King's Landing, the worse the show becomes.
- It feels like the dragons and the white walkers are the end game for the entire story, which means the whole thing is going to end with the dullest characters in this world fighting against the second dullest.
- Martin's writing is too miserable much of the time. He contrives the worst thing possible to happen in most situations.
- We don't get a lot of satisfying narrative pay offs. If one character wants revenge against another, generally his nemesis dies by drinking too much in a bar at the other side of the world, rather than in the confrontation we hope for as viewers.
- They overdo it on all the sex and nakedness just because it's HBO. For example, they spent loads of time showing you that the Red Viper was bisexual and almost no time letting you know that he was a warrior/dangerous. The focus he received was far different from the book.

Settle down.

I'd watch Emilia Clarke read Game of Thrones and be enthralled. :nodding

She's got boobs, true. Doesn't mean she can act worth a damn.

EDIT: There's another con I forgot about in relation to Dany actually. Her story is pretty dull in general, for someone who's supposed to be so important to the overall story. But there's this period in her story where they basically keep inventing cities that we've never heard of for her to invade and take over. It provides quite a fake sense of progression, while really we're just seeing her do the same thing over and over again. I thought that was quite bad writing in the books. If anything it works a little better in the show, but it's still pretty boring.

The funny part is Kit Harrington seems to be the breakout star of the show too. He headlined his own movie not long ago, and he's a voice in How to Train Your Dragon 2.

I don't know if Kit Harrington is necessarily a bad actor. He does have that sulk to him, but I feel like...he's...being told to do that. Because there are instances where he actually shows wit and emotion, like in the book (I just finished reading the first book.)

I'm another that really likes Kit. His northern accent fails him at times but for the character he's playing I wouldn't say he's really put a foot wrong, the way he performed the sword fighting in last weeks episode (the speed in which he moved) was really quite impressive.

I was also really impressed with his sword fighting in the scene at Craster's Keep. Dude was throwing his body into it, it looked awesome.

Yeah. I don't really get Steve's hate for Kit Harrington. I feel like his accent has improved in the years, especially in the later episodes of season four.

I can understand his hate for Dany cos she's dull. But she's also fit. So... she gets a pass :D

I just don't see anything good about him. It's not anything that he's doing per say ... it's everything that he's not doing. I'm not getting any emotion for him, or any intrigue or any dimension. He's just empty. Vacuous. For such a big character in the show, he should be able to bring it and Kit Harrington can't.

The crazy part about his fight is that according to the director Kit Harrington fights at that speed. They didn't have to practice the fight scene much because he was ready to go the sec he got on set.
