Where do you get your news?

Postby PorkChop » May 09, '14, 3:30 pm

I go to reddit for online news - it's easy to find news in areas you care about, and there's always plenty of posts per day.

TV-wise, I just watch BBC News.

Don't watch the news on tv, unless something is going down in which case the partisanship of the talking heads does not change much. But I stay up to date on the internet via CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera. Don't use reddit much for news because a lot of their titles and articles are very sensational. Plus it's a giant circle jerk where if you don't agree with the hive mind you best keep quiet. Add in their witch hunts, and they are just as bad as Fox, MSNBC, Nancy Grace, Glenn Beck, or whoever the hell else they feel like condemning.

That's why I don't have a reddit account :lol I hate the hivemind on there. I just stick to the news sections.

Mainly BBC website, don't get chance to watch the TV news that much.

Other than that, I'd say I'd read articles of interest relating to news on Guardian and the Independent especially if there are reporters whose work I admire worth reading such as Robert Fisk on the latter newspaper and the Guardian is good for its sports pages.

Only red-top I read is the Daily Mirror. Try to avoid 24/7 news unless there is a major story going on.

RTE online, Huffpost, Irish Times website, and the press clippings we get in work - it's my job to go through them usually.

I read a lot of news during the week, but I avoid it almost entirely on the weekend - it's too fucking depressing to not take a regular break from it.

You work in PR? Or anything related to it?

Yeah, can imagine you want a break from the news. I'm the opposite. Because I don't get time to read as much news in the week (have to get my catch-up via the Metro in the mornings), try more to catch up on the weekends.

Don't forget about those who devote their entire reddit life to publicly humiliating any user who makes any sort of spelling or grammatical errors.

Nope, I work in a pretty high up office in An Garda Síochána (Irish police force) - the Press Office emails out press clippings relevant to the organisation to the offices of Assistant Commissioners and up every day; then, someone in the office can go through them to see if there's anything relevant to their remit in there. Fun times.

But, even though the office I'm in is concerned with overall organisational strategy, the A/C who is my boss is also in charge of an operational region, so their stuff will come through our office too if the A/C's in Dublin that day.

On Friday, the A/C was in Dublin, but a woman had been stabbed to death in his operational region the day before, so I wound up knowing a bit more about that than I might like. I'm definitely avoiding the news reports about that for a little while. :(

The Sun newspaper.

It's the paper my mum gets. I only really skim through it. They never really have their priorities right. Today, they have two double page spreads about Katie Price and her cheating boyfriend. Like anyone gives a shit.

Tell me about it. She was mildly entertaining when she went out with that boring plank Peter Andre but since then, just completely useless. She looks ugly now that all her plastic surgery is waning off.

I usually get my news off either the BBC/ITV News website, Huffington Post is another good one.

I read the Daily Mail website sometimes when I want a good laugh, the people who comment on there are for the most part, ridiculous :lol
