your favourite and least favourite film on the IMDb top 20?

Postby Matteo » Apr 28, '14, 7:44 am

The IMDb Top 250

from the top 20 of this list, what is your favourite and least favourite film?

favourite: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

least-favourite: Inception

Forman's masterwork feels just as socially pertinent today than it did upon its release. it's a beautifully crafted piece and manages to remain human without feeling too overtly sentimental. i never cared much for Inception. Interstellar looks good, however.

Well if we're going FAVORITE it'd probably be The Empire Strikes Back, but if we're going BEST then I'd say either Godfather 2 or Schindler's List.

Least favorite and worst would both be Pulp Fiction by a mile, although there are a couple I haven't seen.

There are two or three on the list that I haven't seen, but excluding those these are my selections.

Favourite: It was slightly hard to choose between some of these films, and A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back were both strong contenders, but I can't give this to anything other than One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. It's a really interesting screenplay featuring one of cinema's most effective and iconic villains and one of Nicholson's best performances.

Least Favourite: This was easy. My choice is very definitely The Return of the King. It was an underwhelming anti-climax to the trilogy, as both the films that preceded it were far superior. It failed to deliver a conclusion that lived up to expectations, the pacing was uneven and it went out on an absolute whimper with a number of unnecessary scenes tacked on at the end. I've long considered it one of the most overrated films in Hollywood history.

I'd consider Pulp Fiction and Fight Club a bit overrated too, but not nearly to the same extent.

To me it's not that Fight Club is bad. It's an okay movie, but that's just it. It is an okay movie. I think it is horribly overrated.

I'd actually go as far to say that it's deservedly one of the best films of all time - the messages of anti-consumerism and anti-establishment, the conflict regarding modern manhood, every message in that film is conveyed perfectly if you ask me. It's one of those films I never tire of watching, and I feel as if I learn new things every time I see it.

That's fine. I do think it conveyed those messages well, I just find it lacking or some reason. Do I think it is a good movie? Sure it has all of the elements of one, I just can't make myself like it.

A tricky decision, on both counts, but I'll go with Django Unchained for least favourite, and L.A. Confidential for favourite.

The choice for favourite was particularly difficult, because it's listed right next to The Apartment. :P

I do like Fight Club, although its fanboys do tarnish it for me just a bit. I think they get kind of heavy-handed with the anti-establishment shtick, especially as the movie progresses. One of the most common critiques I've seen of the movie is that it starts off feeling a whole lot more experimental, and by the end of the movie it almost feels like a conventional action film. Which is definitely a valid point.

Ah! I thought it was the top 250... Alright, then Inception for least, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for most.

I also thought it was a typo and he meant 250.
