MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death inside a Connecticut high school and a teenage boy has been taken into police custody.
Emergency responders were called to Jonathan Law High School in Milford shortly after 7 a.m. Friday.
School Superintendent Elizabeth Feser identified the girl as Maren Sanchez, a junior at the school who was well-like by her peers and teachers.
Police Chief Keith Mello said a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody. His name wasn’t released because of juvenile offender laws.
Police say staff members and paramedics performed live-saving measures on the girl, but she later died at Bridgeport Hospital.
Students described an emotional scene where people were crying as police and paramedics swarmed the school.

A Connecticut high school girl was choked and stabbed on Friday, reportedly by a fellow student whose prom invitation she had apparently rejected in a violent dispute that caused the school to be shut down, witnesses and officials said.
The victim, a student at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, a shore town on Long Island Sound about 11 miles southwest of New Haven, was taken to an area hospital shortly after the 7 a.m. attack, according to the Milford Fire Department.
She had been choked and stabbed, according to a law enforcement official speaking on the condition of anonymity.
A police spokesman declined to comment, including on local media reports that the accused assailant had been arrested.
"There was blood on her neck. It was awful," said 16-year-old Sam Garcia, a junior at the school, as he walked home. "I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out."
Bridgeport Hospital spokesman John Cappiello confirmed that a female student from Jonathan Law High School was admitted to the hospital Friday morning, but declined to provide any further information about the girl's condition.
The incident took place on the morning of the junior prom, which was set to begin at a banquet hall in nearby Stratford on Friday at 7 p.m. It was not immediately known whether the event would be rescheduled.
Students and the law enforcement officer said the girl had turned down the boy's invitation to the prom, but officials declined to confirm the reports.
The school, which was on lockdown during the incident, declared an early dismissal at 9 a.m.
