What is the funniest sitcom of all time?

It's tough for me to give it to anything other than Seinfeld, honestly.

Friends and it's not even close. Most of the others that have been mentioned weren't even worth my time after giving them a brief shot.

Frasier. Sustainably long-running, consistently funny, there's character development with shifting relationships over time, and few out-of-character moments. And it still holds up really well.

Yeah best thing about Seinfeld is the had normal situations. Everything that happened to them does happen to people, was it more intense then in real life? Yes but that has to happen for the sake of a tv show but it was still things that could happen. Plus the characters were all people you knew. You might not know someone exactly like George but you did know a guy who put his foot in his mouth a lot, you did know a guy who pulled in women who were way hotter then he ever should have. Same for any of them, you had a weird neighbor who was probably a pretty nice guy, you even had a Newman, everyone has a Newman he is the friend of a friend but you can't stand him.

This. Not even close.

In my opinion the Fawlty Towers episode "Communication Problems" is perfect television. So tightly written, every throw away gag has a follow up and the whole thing comes together with a hilarious payoff.

American sitcoms, Frasier was always my favourite, closely followed by Will & Grace.

Actually Will and Grace had a lot of great episodes.

Some others I liked,

-Scrubs, there were some really good episodes but to many were misses. I actually preferred the last season a bit more then the season or two before that but it would have been better off as a spinoff.

-MASH was a great show but shifted more towards drama after Alan Alda took over. Not that that was a bad thing. But it did go from comedy with some drama, to drama with some comedy.

-Home Improvement was another great show, the family felt real. The kids got into fads, they got into real trouble and delt with real issues. I was disappointed when it went off the air.

The Office. UK version.

Two short series that was unique in its way, the "mockumentary" style set up, no canned laughter and characters that were brilliantly written and acted out. Gervais could have retired off the Office and still be acclaimed for it.

Home Improvement is another good call. Many sitcoms have tried to replicate its formula, but they never have the heart that show had. That's the big difference.

I would say personally that Scrubs is the funniest show I have ever watched. As far as British ones go, my personal fave is Red Dwarf. Also, King of Queens surely has to get a mention.

Never has there been a show I have both liked and hated so much at the same time. I liked Doug and Arthur and all of Doug's friends but Carrie was such a fucking bitch that it was not even enjoyable.

Anyone ever watch "Yes Dear"? I liked that not my number one but it is up there.

I'm giving the nod to Seinfeld, I can still watch any episode on TV and enjoy myself. I can't remember a show that provided so many memorable moments and quotes as it did.

I'll add another mention to Home Improvement, loved that show growing up and can still watch episodes now and enjoy it.

I also loved the Drew Carey Show, doesn't get as much love as a lot of other 90's sitcoms, but the first 5-6 seasons were pretty funny. Great characters.

Re: What is the funniest sitcom of all time?

If I was to name the "best" sitcom, I'd say Frasier. It was always witty and clever and didn't talk down to its audience. It had an amazing cast, a real flare for farce and some of the most well written relationships on television. And it was often hilarious too.

If we're just going for "funniest" though, it'd probably be a British show. I tend to find the British sitcoms more laugh out loud funny than their American counterparts. Fawlty Towers, the I.T. Crowd, Father Ted and Coupling are all some of the shows that have generated the biggest laughs from me.

Carrie was a bitch, but Arthur was an even more irritating character. He was just a horrible cunt. They were aiming for mischievous life of the party but they missed by a whole bunch and landed on "terrible human being". I just found him annoying. The show could be good at times, it had its moments for sure. But overall it was pretty forgettable.

Scrubs was a better shout, but again I don't think it could really hang with the best sitcoms out there. The format got pretty old after a while and some of the characters were quite crappy.
