PubTalk Community Mock Draft

Postby The Legend » Mar 16, '14, 6:51 am

OK, this will be the topic that we actually conduct the Mock Draft in. Below I will have the draft order with the date for each pick to be revealed and who will be doing the picking. Please check that list to figure out when you will be responsible for a pick. After you make the pick and write up the reasoning behind it I will copy and paste it into this first post. Picks begin April 1st.

1. Houston Texans - April 1st (Messiah)

The Houston Texans select...

Image

QB, BLAKE BORTLES, UCF

The quarterback out of UCF has steadily risen in the minds of everyone but nobody who watched him play could doubt his talent. With remarkable similarities to Ben Roethlisberger, I feel that Blake Bortles is going to be the best player at his position, a position that is incredibly valuable in the NFL, and should be the first overall selection by the Houston Texans.

2. St. Louis Rams - April 2nd (DBSoT)

And With The 2nd Overall Pick in the 2014 Pubtalk Forum Mock Draft the St. Louis Rams Select.......
Image

OT, Greg Robinson, Auburn

It’s basically a 1A and 1B type of situation with Greg Robinson and Jake Matthews of Texas A&M. Matthews is a more well-rounded player and could start day one with no issue, Robinson offers more potential long-term. Initially Robinson could start off at right tackle or even inside at guard before eventually taking over for Long on the blindside. Basically this is the same issue as last year with Eric Fisher vs Luke Joeckel. Since last year KC chose potential over polished talent, I will do the same.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars - April 3rd (Messiah)

The Jacksonville Jaguars select...

Image

Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville

Teddy Bridgewater has attracted the ire of many pundits for reasons, I don't know why and there could be an argument that he, not Bortles, deserved to be drafted first overall in this draft. Teddy Bridgewater is an extremely polished quarterback and what he lacks in elite physical attributes, he makes up for it with fantastic decision making and presence in the pocket. While he may never become a top three quarterback, I feel Bridgewater has the potential to become a consistent top ten quarterback and you do not pass on that if you are the Jacksonville Jaguars.

4. Cleveland Browns - April 4th (The Legend)

The Cleveland Browns select...

Image

OLB, Khalil Mack, University of Buffalo

The Cleveland Browns buck the trend of going quarterback or offense and select versatile pass rusher Khalil Mack, the only player whose pro day coach Mike Pettine has attended. The old regime would have selected Johnny Manziel, but I believe this regime will extend an impressive Cleveland Browns streak of skipping quarterback at the top despite the need for the 15th straight year. Mack surpasses Jadaeveon Clowney as the top defensive selection because of a better fit in the 3-4 defense. They also bypass Sammy Watkins for the potential of adding another WR down the line in a deep draft.

5. Oakland Raiders - April 5th (xgamr)

With the Fifth pick in the 2014 Pub Talk forums NFL Mock Draft, The Oakland Raiders select.....

Image

Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

The Raiders have a few selections at this pick. They could go QB, WR, or OL help. I did not feel QB was a choice when the play they had was ok due to talent around them. I thought about Sammy Watkins to help out them at wide out. I decided Matthews. Their OL is very suspect and Matthews, being strong and athletic and has played with a running QB in Manziel, will help the Raiders right away and stay on their line for years to come.a lus is also he can play any position on the line if needed

6. Atlanta Falcons - April 6th (Horseman)

The Atlanta Falcons select...

Image

Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina

If I'm Thomas Dimitroff, I'm both disappointed and excited at the same time. I look at my draft board, knowing Matt Ryan needs more protection on the offensive line, however my top 2 lineman on the board are now gone. I start asking myself if Taylor Lewan is worth drafting at this pick. He might be, but look who dropped to me!

There are plenty of questions about Clowney's work ethic. I'm counting on Mike Smith and Mike Nolan to take care of that. Hell, my owner will pay for a military style boot camp for the kid, if it comes down to it! No one denies this is the best pure talent in this draft, and he plays one of the most important positions in the game; a position that is in dire need of attention in Atlanta.

Sammy Watkins has fallen to me too, however I'm not sure I go and grab him, since offensively I already have the weapons. I need to address defense, and Clowney fell to me. I'm taking him.

7. Tampa Bay Bucs - April 7th (Horseman)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select...

Image

Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson

How did this happen? I don't know, but how convenient for us that it did! That's what Tampa's staff is thinking not-so-far removed from shipping Mike Williams and his extra baggage to Buffalo. Vincent Jackson proved last year that he's still a premiere superstar WR in the league. But, it also clearly showed he needs assistance!

NFL scouts whose word/reputation I actually trust have rated Sammy Watkins as being a little worse than A.J. Green, and a little better than Julio Jones. That's a pretty damn good spot to be rated at.

Do I have other needs? Sure, but who doesn't? There are always needs that need to be addressed. To me, this is the best player available, and it just so happens to fill one of those needs. I'm in the AFC South, where devastating passing offenses aren't going out of style anytime soon.

Finally, I have Josh McCown. I just signed him to a largely incentive based contract, after putting on one hell of a show filling in for an injured Jay Cutler in Chicago. I don't see McCown as a long term solution at 34 years old, nor do I see him as an amazing talent. I see a smart QB, who will utilize weapons well, if I give them to him. Why would I not want to put him in position to succeed? In Chicago, he had Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and Matt Forte. Why would I not want him to be comfortable here too, giving him Vincent Jackson, Sammy Watkins and Doug Martin?

8. Minnesota Vikings - April 8th (Everlong)

With the 8th pick in the 2014 PubTalkForum Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select...

Image

JOHNNY MANZIEL. Quarterback, Texas A&M

The Vikings are desperate for a quarterback of the future. They've given up on Christian Ponder. Josh Freeman is gone. Matt Cassel is the presumed starter, but he's nothing more than a stopgap. The Vikings have enough offensive pieces in place to do some damage if they had a quarterback that could keep defenses honest, and Cassel just isn't that.

While some might anticipate the Vikings to go defense, particularly given their new coach is defensive minded, the prospect of grabbing Manziel at 8 may be too much to pass up, especially given his outstanding pro day and the way he's looked in the lead-up to the draft so far. Manziel is probably the best quarterback remaining on the board at this point, and definitely the quarterback with the most upside. Not only is he able to throw the ball at an NFL level, but having him as a scrambling and running threat will create headaches for defenses when you pair him with Adrian Peterson.

This just seems like a Minnesota Vikings kind of draft pick, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it winds up happening.

9. Buffalo Bills - April 9th (ShaneOFan)

With the 9th pick of the 2014 Draft The Buffalo ShaneOfans select...

Eric Ebron, TE, out of North Carolina

Image

Bills need line help and I had considered taking Taylor Lewman here, but this draft is fairly deep for linemen. Another main need we have is receiving. Right now the the most likely starters are Stevie Johnson, Mike Williams, and Robert Woods. With Graham and Goodwin in the #4 and 5 slots. Not a bad corps. But we lack at TE. Right now we have Scott Chandler, a 6'7'' 250 guy with a case of the dropsies as our go to guy. He isn't bad but he needs help and I don't feel he is a true #1 TE. I think Ebron can be that #1 guy we need. He is damn athletic and while he also needs to work on his hand work I think he is easier to teach then Chandler. Honestly if I were in charge of the draft, I would try to trade down at this point but in keeping the pick Ebron is the smartest choice.

10. Detroit Lions - April 10th (Everlong)

With the 10th pick in the PubTalkForum 2014 Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select...

Image

JUSTIN GILBERT. Cornerback. Oklahoma State.

This isn't exactly a shocking selection; lots of mock drafts have the Lions taking Gilbert at 10. But it's for good reason -- the Lions' secondary was absolutely appalling last year, and Gilbert is a playmaker who could make an instant impact on that defense. Gilbert is remarkably athletic, has a knack for being in the right place at the right time and has great height and arm length for the position. He's also a threat on kick and punt returns. Basically, Gilbert really resembles Patrick Peterson; not saying he'll wind up being as successful, but they're built of the same mold. From what I remember seeing of Gilbert he's very physical in coverage as well, which can be taken as either a strength or weakness depending on how you see it. I think this is basically a no-brainer selection for the Lions at 10.

11. Tennessee Titans - April 11th (Messiah)

The Tennessee Titans select...

Image

ANTHONY BARR, OLB, UCLA

Tennessee is extremely lacking when it comes to pass rushers and Barr has the potential to become the best pure pass rusher from the 3-4 OLB position in the entire draft. With fantastic athleticism, Barr still has a good amount he needs to work on (strength) but Barr should be top value for Tennessee at this point.

12. New York Giants - April 12th (CMPUNKFAN)

The New York Giants select...

Image

Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Taylor Lewan would be a steal for the Giants at No. 12, as they need a left tackle and Lewan has the ability to be a very good one in the NFL if he can improve his strength. The Giants still have plenty of question marks along their offensive line with Will Beatty coming back from a broken leg. Taylor is a very good technician as a run-blocker and has quick feet and hands as a pass protector.

13. St. Louis Rams - April 13th (DBSoT)

The St. Louis Rams select....

Image

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, FS, Alabama

Rams really need to improve their backfield and he would be a big immediate help he is 6'1'' 208 and a fast mover. Good hands but not great good speed for his position. Gets called off and tricked more then he should be able learn to work around that. Very smart and trainable a day 1 starter and best FS in the draft right now.[/quote]

14. Chicago Bears - April 14th (Everlong)

With the 14th selection in the 2014 PubTalkForum NFL Draft... the Chicago Bears GIVE THEIR PICK AWAY TO THE GREEN BAY PACKERS OMG NO WAY

But for real...

The Bears select

Image

CALVIN PRYOR. Free safety. Louisville.

The Bears might still need defensive line help more than DB help, but with them having added a few pieces in free agency, safety's the next logical choice, especially given how lack of quality safety play basically ended their season in 2014. With Clinton-Dix being taken off the board by the Rams with the pick before, Calvin Pryor is the next best option available at the position. It's worth noting that Chicago might be willing to trade back a few picks if this is the scenario that plays out, because Pryor would likely be available a few picks later, but for our purposes we'll just have them take him now.

Pryor is an extremely physical safety that should help bring some edge back to a Bears defense that has become uncharacteristically soft. He's big, fast and explosive and capable of playing against receivers of all sizes. He doesn't have as much lateral quickness as straight line speed, but his attitude and physical gifts can help to make up for that. Basically, he's the kind of player the Bears need to bring in if they want to get back to being a respectable unit.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers - April 15th (The Legend)

With the 15th overall selection the Pittsburgh Steelers select...

Image

Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

The Steelers have multiple directions they could go here and multiple needs they had to address this off-season. They helped improve their offense with receiver additions in free agency. Offensive line help seems to be a need every year, but I think fixing their defense is of primary concern. They could address any level of their defense with Aaron Donald on the line or CJ Moseley in the middle, but I went with Dennard because I think he above any option will help to create turnovers for a defense that was completely incapable of that a year ago.

16. Dallas Cowboys - April 16th (CMPUNKFAN)

With the 16th overall selection the Dallas Cowboys select...

Image
Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh

Aaron Donald is the best player available who makes sense for Dallas. He had a dominant 2013 campaign and has since strengthened his draft stock with strong showing at the Senior Bowl and Combine. Donald is a terrific fit in defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli's scheme and comes with the full trophy closet that Jerry Jones appreciates, as well.

17. Baltimore Ravens - April 17th (The Legend)

With the 17th Pick in the Mock Draft the Baltimore Ravens select....

Image

Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M

I have to imagine that if the board fell this way and no other receivers had come off the board yet the Ravens would say thank you and sprint to the podium to hand in this card. Losing Boldin really hurt the offense last season and Mike Evans becomes a very strong younger replacement to Boldin that will hopefully help their offense move the ball better as well. Flacco needs more weapons to reach his potential and it will lessen the burden on their running game, which God only know what condition that will be in next year considering Ray Rice's on and off field issues.

18. New York Jets - April 18th (ShaneOFan)

With the 18th pick of the draft, the New York Jets select...

LSU WR Odell Beckham Jr.
Image

The Jets need help in a lot of places and wide receiver is one of them. At the moment Odell is the best player on the board. It came down to him or Brandin Cooks and I think Beckham is the better player. Good hands and good speed this 6'0'' receiver from LSU is taller and bigger then Cooks and in this league two inches can matter. I think that he will be a good addition for a second year QB who struggled his rookie season.

19. Miami Dolphins - April 19th (ShaneOFan)

With the 19th pick of the draft, the Miami Dolphins select...

Zach Martin OL out of Notre Dame.
Image

Seeing as how Miami will be missing both Richie Incognito and Johnathan Martin from their line up this year they need to do something at offensive line. They already added Branden Albert at OT, but they need a good guard. Martin is the smartest and safest pick. Day one starter and a heavy hitter. May not have the arm reach a lot of guys have but he is great at setting himself in and keeping his footing.

20. Arizona Cardinals - April 20th (DBSoT)

#20 Arizona Cardinals select.....
Image
Cyrus Kouandjio

Arizona can go many directions including OT, QB, OLB, or CB. Cyrus Kouandjio is a mauling right tackle who could have a rather simple transition to the pros. He's a force in the running game and holds up well enough as a pass protector, so he'll start right away and eliminate any questions on the right side. The hard part about this pick is that Arizona would be taking the 5th offensive tackle at the 20th pick, but this class of tackles is really solid and if not for a few technical issues Kouandijo would have been a top 10 pick. They could also go after a OLB/DE like Dee Ford or a QB like Derek Carr.

21. Green Bay Packers - April 21st (Everlong)

With the 21st pick in the 2014 PubTalkForum NFL Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...

Image

CJ Mosley. Inside linebacker. Alabama.

The Packers desperately need safety help, but the only safety left on the board that has first round value is Jimmie Ward, and he goes against the mentality the Packers have been making lately of adding bigger, more physical players to their defense. While Mosley isn't huge by inside linebacker standards (234ish pounds), he's got the quickness and elite playmaking ability that the Packers so sorely need at the position while still having the frame to bulk up a bit. AJ Hawk and Brad Jones are liabilities in coverage, whereas Mosley has outstanding ability to read an offense and react quickly. He was once projected to be an early first round pick, but was dinged up a bit this year and that lowered his stock.

I think if Mosley is left on the board, it's an easy pick for the Packers to snatch him up and go with a safety in round 2 or 3, considering inside linebacker is just as big of a need for the defense at this point.

22. Philadelphia Eagles - April 22nd (CMPUNKFAN)

With the 22nd overall selection the Philadelphia Eagles select...

Image
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida St.

The Eagles need to bolster their wide receiver corps and head coach Chip Kelly covets bigger people at the skill positions. Those factors make Benjamin a likely first-round choice for Philly. At 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, Benjamin is a red-zone threat, but his size, speed and crisp routes could make him a long-term upgrade over departed DeSean Jackson.

23. Kansas City Chiefs - April 23rd (xgamr)

With the 23rd pick in the 2014 PubTalkForum NFL Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...

Image

Brandin Cooks, WR., Oklahoma State

This pick was going to be Bekham Jr. and since he is off the board i went with Cooks. Cooks is someone who can help spread the ball out more for Alex smith and take some load off of Charles. With the inconsistency at wideout, someone like Cooks will improve them Cooks had 95 receptions for 2,881 yards (15.4-yard average) and 21 TDs in last two seasons. looking a the film, he has similar traits to Steve smith in how he runs routes and this will help Andy Reid's offense.

24. Cincinnati Bengals - April 24th (The Legend)

With the 24th pick the Cincinnati Bengals select...

Image

Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

This pick was pretty hard actually. The Bengals have made it to the playoffs three straight years, but haven't won a game mostly because of the play of quarterback Andy Dalton, but I don't think they will make a change at QB until Dalton's rookie contract is over. Due to that and their most pressing need off the board, I went to secondary issues, and no pun intended, but they could use some help and depth in the secondary to replace free agent losses there earlier this spring.

25. San Diego Chargers - April 25th (xgamr)

With the 25th pick in the 2014 PubTalkForum NFL Mock Draft, the San Diego Chargers select...

Image

Jason Verrett, CB TCU

The Chargers secondary needs to be upgraded to compete with Denver and other teams in their division. I would chose Fuller but hes gone. Verrett is the next best choice with how he has played and his work at the combine and should fit into the chargers defense.

another pick here would be Louis Nix as that is a need as well. But Cornerback is a oick they cant miss unless all of their choices are gone by this pick.

26. Cleveland Browns - April 26th (The Legend)

With the 26th pick the Cleveland Browns select...

Image
Marqise Lee, WR, USC

Could someone please explain to me how Marqise Lee has fallen this far? I mean if Lee drops this far it becomes a no-brainer for the Browns to grab their future #2 receiver to pair with Josh Gordon and tight end Jordan Cameron to pair with the right quarterback to get all of these weapons (not to mention: receivers Andrew Hawkins, Travis Benjamin and running backs Ben Tate and Dion Lewis). Sure the right quarterback might not be on the team yet and could be the pick here, but in reality if you have a competition between Brian Hoyer and any of David Carr, Jimmy Garopolo or Tom Savage I believe Hoyer wins that this year. So, in the first round take the guy that makes an immediate impact and that's a potential star receiver. I'm making this pick, but fully expecting Lee to go ahead of Cooks, Beckham or Benjamin. Browns will grab their future backup quarterback in the second or third round.

27. New Orleans Saints - April 27th (Horseman)

The New Orleans Saints select:

Image

Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State University

This team is in decent shape right now. They bounced back from their MNF slaughtering at the hands of the Seahawks up in Seattle, by putting on a much more respectable performance against the same, in the playoffs.

They have a few needs. And, at this point in the draft, needs tend to start getting focused on more than best player available in some front offices; the only exception being a "duh" player that your team has scouted, and is thrilled to see nobody else has caught onto.

Rob Ryan injected quite a bit of emotion and attitude into an overall talent deficient defensive unit last year. They have made strides in the secondary, with Kenny Vaccaro working out nicely, now being teamed up with new free agent signing Jairus Byrd.

They still have a need for help at CB, however after the recent beeline to grab CBs, the Saints are going to feel a little more comfortable relying on their elite safety unit. Additionally, their offensive line needs some reinforcement, but there's already been quite a blitz there too.

Ryan Shazier has come to them, and he's the type of plug and play linebacker that can come in right away, and make an impact. Rob Ryan will convince Sean Payton to take this kid, if he's available.

28. Carolina Panthers - April 28th (Horseman)

In all seriousness, here's my ACTUAL Carolina Panthers pick:

Image

Ja'wuan James, OT, Tennessee

I'm sure you expected receiver, right? Who wouldn't, when their offseason was so overwhelmingly terrible at the WR position.

Here's the deal though; they didn't just lose WRs to free agency. They lost star LT Jordan Gross(retired), and several key defensive pieces. This team SUCKS at handling success, which has been the case throughout their history.

If Marquis Lee had dropped to them, they probably would have gone and grabbed him. If Mike Evans actually fell as far as he did, the Panthers would be a potential trade suitor to go up and grab him. That's all gone at this point; the top WRs are indeed well off the board at this time.

So, I start thinking as the Panthers GM, about the situation I'm in. I've at least grabbed a few veteran WRs in the latter end of free agency. This is good because I need receivers right now, who can jump into an offense with some expertise. I need this, because Cam Newton is not going to get much practice time with them as it is, recovering from that knee surgery. Is now really the time to bring in a rookie WR, unless it's a sure thing?

On top of that, there are still a few veteran WRs out there, that are waiting to see how the draft pans out. I might as well stack the WR corp with those veterans instead, to make sure Cam has a WR depth chart filled with players who have...you know...caught a pass once or twice before.

What I still don't have addressed, is the hole Jordan Gross created at the critical LT spot. Ja'wuan James does project to be a potential starter rather quickly, and Cam is going to need someone watching his blind side there. Perhaps James ends up a cornerstone as Gross did for years? I'm willing to take that gamble, because I really don't have much of a choice.

29. New England Patriots - April 29th (ShaneOFan)

With the 29th pick of the draft the New England Nancy Pants select...

Image

Louis Nix DT Notre Dame.

Pats need help on defense and while they have Wilfolk and Kelly, I don't see the former being around after this year(I feel he has a one year deal for a reason) If Nix falls this far it is simply taking one of the best players available and he happens to fill a future need. Liked seeing him in ND, he isn't very fast and can't make the best adjustments but if you need someone to be a big fat ass and stand still, he is your guy.

30. San Francisco 49ers - April 30th (DBSoT)

With the 30th pick the San Francisco 49ers select...

Image

Rashede Hageman, Minnesota, Defensive Lineman.

31. Denver Broncos - May 1st (xgamr)

With the 31st pick in the 2014 Pub Talk forums NFL Mock Draft, The Denver Broncos select.....

Image

Xavier Su'a-Filo, OG, UCLA

With how Seattle owned their offense in the super bowl, The Broncos would want to look to improving their O-line to let Peyton do what he does best. With a hole at guard due to free agency, Su'a-Filo is a good fit. 6'4 307. He helped UCLA out and can help the broncos with protection Playing the other positions can help as well on the pass and run.

32. Seattle Seahawks - May 2nd (DBSoT)

The Seattle Seahawks select...

Image

Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss

Yeah that was my plan. It gets really hard and really unpredictable to do more than 1 round. Although I guess if people wanted to do more than that I guess we could. It's just that we are guaranteed to be wrong on pretty much every pick after the first round. What do other people think about expanding it? We could always do two picks a day if people decide to expand it.

Messiah is in fact on the clock today. Only 13 hours, 11 minutes left on his clock. Kind of like the real NFL draft.

I fully expect the Texans to take Bortles. Every teams needs a franchise QB and Bortles fits O'Brien's mold for a QB almost to a tee. Many place him in the Big Ben category, but I would put him more like a Tony Romo in terms of skills. He has similar arm strength to Romo, but better mobility. He is still a bit raw, but so are the rest of the QBs in this draft. He has the highest upside out of all the QBs of this draft. I could also see Houston selecting Clowney or Khalil Mack here as well. The St. Louis Rams are now on the clock......

The Bortles pick to me is an interesting one and not because it really isn't being projected. It's being projected everywhere, but I just don't see it with Bortles. He's far too inaccurate and a guy who's offense in college was largely based on the screen game.

As for Greg Robinson, I like the pick for St. Louis, but I really expected it to be Sammy Watkins here. The fact that he is still on the board at this point surprises me a little.

I really don't understand where Bortles came from. I always get nervous about guys who shoot up the draft board long after the NCAA season is over (i.e. Gabbert, Tannehill, Clausen). But I guess we'll see what happens.

He comes from being 6-4 with ideal size and arm strength in a year where all the other quarterbacks are 6-feet tall and not cookie cutter.
