Thinking about getting an Ipad..

Postby AkydefGoldberg » Mar 04, '14, 4:56 pm

Having nearly drowned my first wages due to bills, want to treat myself to a gift of some sorts and I thought as my niece has an ipad (who is 6 btw), I kinda thought I'd join her and get one myself.

I'm not fairly clued up on ipads and how they work (why do they need a sim card?) or where to begin finding the best one and for a decent price.

I've got a laptop which I use for e-mails, browsing and the odd watching of TV, or catch up TV like Iplayer etc.

But I'd like an ipad to do that as my laptop is waning I feel. Also, I've read that you can play Football Manager on an ipad now which would be mega-fun as I love those sorts of games and ain't played one since on my FIFA 2009 Manager Mode (Yes it has been a while).

So, any tips and advice fellow forumers? ;)

I guess if I was to get a tablet-like device I'd be more likely to get a Kindle. I just prefer laptops to tablets as they're much easier to type on and play games on, and so if I were to have a tablet I'd basically be using it as an e-reader.

If you're set on not just getting a new laptop I'd say get a Nexus 7. iPads are pish.

In terms of build quality you cannot go wrong with an iPad, the iPad Air is the best tablet I've used! Of course if you don't like the size there is of course the Retina iPad mini, which is essentially the same iPad as the Air, just the smaller screen.

The major problem with an Android tablet is that most apps are only designed for phones and on the tablets they are just blown up, and look horrible.

You can get an iPad without a Sim Card (they're cheaper). The ones that have those are so you can pay a cellphone provider a monthly fee to connect to the internet anywhere you want, even though the iPad is capable of connecting to open WiFi networks just as easy.

Personally I'd go for the model without the Sim, it's a waste IMHO unless you're going to need slow cellphone internet in the middle of no where.

As far as iPads go, I can't knock their quality. They are good. But for the price, I'd rather have a Nexus 7.

TBH after I wrote this thread, I had a moment of "Why the fuck didn't I mention other tablets? There are, other tablets other than an Ipad!".

I've used a Samsung phone for a while and been impressed with its workings. So I might look into Samsung related tablets but yeah, an Ipad is probably the direction I'm going for.

iPad's are definitely good, I just don't understand why people pay what they do for them. They're not worth the 599 and 699 they ask for.. I'd say 299-350 is more accurate.

I'd recommend the Kindle FIre HD. You can get great games. It is an amazing e-reader. Free books from their app store. Amazon Prime is a great tv and movie streamer.

I have a Samsung tablet, and tis pretty swish. Only drawback is the battery seems to drain pretty sharpish these days.

Which Samsung one you got? How much you pay for it?

I have the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and love it, I payed $399 Canadian a few years ago but not sure about the new ones. It is great for viewing websites, reading and typing email. However I had to install a different keyboard since the Samsung default keyboard sucks. As for battery life it last me a day or two depending what I am using it for. If I am viewing videos it seems to go quickly but for day to day things it goes a few days. Also it best to remove any unused apps that run in the background since I noticed they take up battery power too and you never see them running.
