Arizona's "religious freedom" vs. homosexuals bill

Postby Everlong » Feb 26, '14, 12:59 pm

http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/25/us/arizona-brewer-sb1062/

I just posted a relevant article about this in the sports section, but realized we hadn't discussed the bill itself on the board yet. The above article should get you up to date on the situation, but to highlight what's going on:

  • The bill would grant businesses in the state the right to deny service to gay and lesbian customers so long as proprietors were acting solely on their religious beliefs.
  • The state legislature passed this bill.
  • The Governor of Arizona has until Saturday to decide whether to sign the bill into law or veto it.
  • Many high profile businesses and organizations have come out against the bill, including the NFL, which has threatened to move the site of Super Bowl XLIX away from Arizona if the bill gets signed into law.
That should get you up to date on what's happening. Basically it's been a huge firestorm with a lot of debate, although frankly I'm not exactly sure what there is to debate about. Seems to me that the bill legitimizes discrimination under the thinly veiled guise of religious freedom. Oddly enough, nowhere in Christian doctrine does it say that you should discriminate against gays, but you know, whatever man.

I'm not sure what part of "love thy neighbor" or "Judge not" they didn't understand. Thing is, I am gad they made this law I really am. Just like I am glad so many states made laws banning gay marriage. It has proven to have made it so much easier to give homosexuals the rights they deserve because they can simply sue now. If there is no law it makes it hard to push for equal rights. If you have a law prohibiting rights it makes it so much easier because it can be challenged and overturned. This is bull shit at the highest level I mean didn't we establish with these guys Image that you can't discriminate? I'm sorry that a few religious zealots are unconformable thinking about what two men do in the privacy of their home but that's their problem not societies.

Relevant, Anderson Cooper debates some nut bag state senator from AZ.

Ugh, the world has so much more important things to discuss and argue over, why do we always have to focus on this one?

Arizona just has so many issues like this because it's filled with geriatric old fucks that retire and move there because there are warmer winters.

HEY! As a resident Arizonian I take offense to that. I thought all you cousin fuckers in Mahzuri (that's how y'all spell it right?) Would appreciate such a hate filled law. Isn't the whole "we hate all" KKK bulshit yalls thing when your not making a niece/daughter with your sister wife? :lol

All kidding aside, it really is a bullshit attempt at a law that has no merit. I don't know the origins of it or how it even got this far but I am glad they vetoed it. We may hate illegals and love our guns but as far as I know Arizona has never had a problem with gays. In fact, I live 25 miles from Bisbee az, the town is famous for two things - 1. The lavender pit, the country's deepest and richest coper mine to date (although its mined out and closed now) and 2. Having the highest population percentage of gays/straight in the nation (not highest number of gays, highest percent of gays compared to straight).

For a state that set the benchmark for how medical marijuana should be handled I am really surprised we fucked up with something this stupid

^If you're going to mock the way Missouri locals pronounce Missouri, at least get the phonetics right. They say "Muh-zur-uh." Or at least most of the Southern Missourians do. I'm Midwest, I probably sound more like someone from Kansas. Which can't be much better.

Now, I'm not saying Arizona started out filled with geriatrics. I just know a bunch of the old fuckers move there from all parts of the country, some permanently, some just reside there in the winter. Source: a good percent of my own geriatric customers that I despise go to Arizona for 6-8 months every year. :lol They're the ones causing the problems, of this I am certain.

I can't knock you on that one, them fucking snow birds come to town (especially were I live cause the weather is fuckimg awesome) and they do nothing but clog the Wendy's for some stupid reason and cause car accidents. Pole the number one demographic for complaints we get at work (county road maintenance) is from those old retired fucks.

^Hey, I call 'em snow birds, too! When I don't call 'em snow fucks.

I bet you've even ran into some of my customers. They're the ones wrapping their cars around fire hydrants when parallel parking, driving down the wrong side of the road, not looking while backing, not using their turn signals, and spending hours in restaurants (and I mean hours) only ordering one refillable coffee.

And if you have a Country Kitchen anywhere, you'll find them breeding there practically.

If only the world could see that gay people aren't the problem, geriatrics are. :D

Ah I'm gonna get flamed hard for not respecting my elders but it's so hard when they run you down all day for a living.

Re: Arizona's "religious freedom" vs. homosexuals bill

Couple of thoughts.

Firstly, any business that would deny service to paying customers won't stay in business for very long. A business exists to make money, not to push religious or political beliefs.

Secondly, this bill was redundant, because Arizona law already allows businesses to refuse service to anybody for any reason, or no reason at all. While federal civil rights laws may in theory prevent businesses from discriminating against gay people, the burden of proof is on the accuser and it can be hard to prove discrimination even if it seems obvious to some.

In other words, Arizona businesses already can refuse service to gays, if they wanted to.

Third, this bill proves one of the single biggest reasons that America is great. And that is, if you don't like the laws in one state, you can simply move to another. If everything were controlled by the feds, then that wouldn't be an option. So, good for Arizona making their own laws. I damn sure will never go there, but good for them.

And kind of a contradiction to that, but this is true as well. If this law had been signed into law after all, the courts would have struck it down anyway. This is why we have three branches of government each with some power over one another. Basically, the reason why we made it that way is we never trusted the government, and we never will.

We don't have a couple try kitchen but we do have geriatric retreats such as Golden Coral, IHOP and as previously stated, Wendy's. The Golden Coral you can forget about even thinking of going to because just the slightest mention of a all you can eat buffet with a senior discount makes them shit their diapers and hobble there with their walkers and Rascal power scooters.

What scares me the most is knowing that these fucks most likely drove here in a 40+ foot long class A motor home towing a car over the coarse of at least 1000 miles.
