My housemate thinks that Con Air is a good film.

Talk about movies and television in here!

My housemate thinks that Con Air is a good film.

Postby PorkChop » Jan 15, '14, 10:29 am

We were at the pub last night and he said it was "at least an 8 out of 10", with extreme emphasis on 'at least'. He says it's one of the best action movies he's ever seen, and told his new girlfriend that they'll have to watch it together soon.

Those of you who have seen the film, please help me explain why this is a bad idea.

I actually do enjoy the movie for what it is. Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination, but for it's action and sometimes cheesy elements it's pretty entertaining, even funny sometimes. Also, the characters are pretty unique and stand out in it. It's one of the movies that I don't necessarily seek out, but if I see it on TV and I'm not doing anything I'll usually watch it.

I enjoyed it when I watched it maybe 5 or 6 years ago. From what I remember I would give it a 6/10, but I would have to re-watch it to have a more accurate rating.

My wife and I love this movie, it's great for what it is: A campy kick ass 90's action movie that goes along great with some beers and a friend or two.

8/10 sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Don't touch da bunneh.

EDIT: Hell, it's almost a 7 on IMDB (6.8 score) and that's the must stuck up, snooty, criticy, Hollywood-schmoozing lot of trolls on the internet. Even they liked it! :lol

^LOL at that gif.

But I remember watching that film sneakily when it came out, on video, and I loved it. Probably the best performance I've seen of Nicolas Cage although Face/Off weren't bad.

Me and your housemate have something in coming.

Although, 8/10 is a bit of a stretch.

I wouldn't call it a 8/10 by any means. It is entertaining yes but not 8/10 worthy. Had a bunch of decent actors not named Nick Cage. Decent story for 90's action and the script was not horrible but maybe a 6.5/10 good if nothing is on but come on guys...

It's nearly a cult classic due to..

A. Nic Cage
B. John Malkovich
C. Campiness
D. 90's
E. The bunneh

It's a meme-worthy movie, of course it deserves at least an 8 out of 10. It's just not an 8 out 10 in the way that stupid critics praise pure garbage (like that shit Monster's Ball) and award bad movies with all of those stupid artsy fartsy awards to them for making you wanna suicide after viewing because they're draining and aren't any fun at all.

It's a fun 8 out of 10, not a "Academy Award" (aka fucking garbage) 8 out of 10. 8)

Fun fact: Con Air was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Original Song ("How Do I Live") and Best Sound Mixing. It lost both to Titanic.

Side note, I hate "out of ten" scales. Like, what makes a 7 different from an 8? I don't get how to quantify it. I rate based on enjoyment: Amazing, Great, Good, Enjoyable Crap, Crap, and I WILL KILL EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THIS PRODUCTION. On this scale, Con Air is right between "Good" and "Enjoyable Crap", leaning towards "Good", which is honestly where the majority of Nicolas Cage's filmography lies for me. I'm hardly ever bored watching his movies.

^For me I tend to rate movies on a 1-10 scale relative to other movies within their genre. So I gave Frozen an 8.5/10 in that stickied thread recently, which means I'd say it's better than 85% of animated movies.

I remember when fun movies used to get all sorts of nominations. Maybe it started around Titanic, but everyone's taste changed to depressing and dark movies.
