If you were a wrestling promoter...

Postby Matteo » Jan 07, '14, 10:28 pm

And you had to choose between hiring...

1) a fantastic mic worker with charisma and presence but little to no wrestling talent whatsoever

or

2) a gifted technical wrestler with mediocre mic skills and not much of a charismatic presence

... which would you choose? This is purely a hypothetical and does not really matter about the nature of today's wrestling industry.

I would go for option 1. As good as it is to see a great technical wrestling match week in and week out if given the opportunity to do so, I personally think the 'entertainment' aspect of scripted wrestling is the greatest and that all really derives from mic work, presence, and the overall charisma of the wrestler, not necessarily his wrestling abilities.

What say you?

I mean it really depends. Will or will they not ever improve in one of the areas to become at least average there? If you go back to Undertaker's early days, he was dreadful in the ring but had a presence to him. Granted, wasn't much on the microphone either until later but still. He could tell a story through his character. Same with The Rock, who was more of an athlete than a wrestler early on.

From a booking standpoint, I think option 1 is the best because it allows you to do a lot more storyline wise. From a business standpoint, it is option 1 and not even close.

This is a smart ass answer, but I was going to say the same thing. You really need both qualities to run a properly entertaining wrestling show. If you can't find performers who have both qualities, then you're going to want to find a mix of performers - some who are great in the ring, others who are great on the mic. That way you'll have no major holes in your programming.

Picking up people who are young or seem capable of improvement would also be a good idea.
