What is the best film you've seen in 2013?

Postby Matteo » Dec 26, '13, 10:16 pm

Note: it does not have to be a film made from 2013, per-se. What is the best film you watched on a first time viewing this year? I've seen a lot of masterworks, but watching Detachment for the first time was just an incredible experience. It instantly became a top favourite and I have seen it three times since.

I'd encourage anyone to see it.

Well it's easier for me to remember movies I saw for the first time in the theater than in general, but I'll see what I can remember...

Reservoir Dogs - To me, this is Tarantino's best work. It takes all the best aspects of Pulp Fiction and yet weeds out all of the extremely unnecessary dialogue and banter that really plagued that movie. Incredibly smart writing and solid directing.

Catching Fire - This was in the theater. I thought this was a vastly superior movie to the first Hunger Games film, which I actually also enjoyed.

Argo - Didn't expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did, but it was a ton of fun.

Back to the Future - I KNOW I KNOW I'd never seen this movie before this year and that makes me a terrible person. I thought this would be one of those cases where I wouldn't appreciate the movie as much as my friends because I didn't grow up with it, but that wasn't the case at all.

The Lone Ranger

Yep. My wife and I really thought the movie was fun, hilarious, and awesome to watch. It wasn't too long, it wasn't too short, it was odd but in a good way. Loads of laughs, awesome train action sequence. Loved it from start to finish. That was in the theaters. I bought it for my wife as one of her gifts for this Christmas, and we watched it again last night. Just as good, if not better, at home during the second viewing. I don't know if critics were hard on this because it changes the original story, if they were hard on it because of its large budget, or hard on it just because it was a Western and people just seem done with Westerns. I say they are all a bunch of snooty artsy fartsy bastards. Such a shame the movie bombed so badly because there will likely never be another one.

Saw plenty of other movies this year but I just had the most fun with this one.

Pacific Rim. It may not have been the best acted or the best story, but it was by far the most fun ive had watching a movie in a real long time. And in the end, thats really what movies are about. Having fun and being entertained. Its ashame that this movie didnt do well in the Us, but ut was a hit in ither places so hopefully that can warrent a sequel.

Other good ones were- Elysium, The lone Ranger and Man of Steel. Im seeing Wolf of Wall Street in acouple hours so that may make the list too.

Now as of movies not from 2013 that ive seen this year-
Moonrise Kingdom was great, probably my favorite Wes Anderson movie.
Being John Malcovitch was also a really good one i watched for the first time this year.
Theres a bunch others ive watched on netflix but cant remember right now :lol

I haven't seen the Lone Ranger, but I'm pretty surprised to see that named twice given that it was critically panned and under-performed despite a huge advertising budget. That's usually a good indicator of bad word of mouth.

Silver Linings Playbook was one of my favourite movies this year. Great performances and a charming and enjoyable plot. Though I preferred The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I saw on DVD for the first time this year. That was a surprisingly good film - sweet and interesting, with good performances and a great soundtrack. It was the perfect coming of age story.

My favourite movie from the cinema this year was probably Frozen. A good fairy tale always makes me smile and Disney is really finding its feet again lately. I loved the fresh perspective on females in fairy tales and romantic/family relationships. It was a movie that had a lot to say, along with being funny and sweet. The songs were great too. "Let it Go" was amazing. The best Disney song I've heard in 20 years.

Well i went into it expecting it to be complete shit, which probably made me like it more. Overall it was a real fun time with some really funny moments and cool action sequences. The final train sequence is one of the best action scenes ive seen. But Disney really set themselves up to fail with this one. They spent 200 million for a western, which usually are not box office blockbusters, to go along with the fact that the character has been unused for years. It was destined to fail. I still recommend everyone checking it out as it is a fun movie that got alot of undeserved hate from critics.

The Lone Ranger wasn't fairly judged as far as I'm concerned. Very fun film that didn't deserve a lot of the criticism it got. I think it'll find it's audience on DVD etc. In fact,l I bought it today for my sister's birthday,

I don't want to say any of the obvious choices as others will cover that. I think the best film I've seen this year is Blue is the Warmest Colour. Incredibly uncomfortable film to sit through, in a great sort of way. It covers a relationship fro, start to finish, and it makes use of a lot of very close angles, keeping you right in the actors faces, so you see and really feel every tiny emotion. The intimate moments, I felt uncomfortable because it was as if you were invading on this couple and seeing moments you shouldn't see. And the discomfort grew as the film went on because of what happens in the film. Incredible film, but also a film I wouldn't want to watch again.

To be a little more obvious, Thor 2. Loved Thor 2 and what's more, my sister loved Thor 2, and she generally doesn't like those sorts of movies.

Marketa Lazarova completely blew me away. Had never even heard of it up until watching it. Widely considered to be the greatest Czech movie ever made and considering my knowledge of film and the handful of Czech films that I have seen, I'd have to agree wholeheartedly.

Just saw Saving Mr. Banks today, so I'd add that to my list. Probably the best movie I saw in the theaters this year.

Django Unchained came out in January I think, so that. Silver Linings Playbook being the runner up.

I just saw it today, and it was Frozen. Dear lord, this might be my perfect Disney film. I can't honestly think of one thing it did wrong. Every song hit perfectly, especially "Let It Go", the characters were well developed, the comic relief was not at all obnoxious, and the animation and designs were just gorgeous. The only minor problem is that I did predict both twists, but they were so well executed that they still managed to catch me off guard when they did happen. I loved the last two Disney Princess films, although the characters in The Princess and the Frog could get grating, and I wasn't a huge fan of the songs in Tangled. Frozen doesn't have those problems, and it's easily the best Disney Princess film since Beauty and the Beast, maybe the best Disney Animated Film overall since The Lion King. It's a beautiful movie and I recommend it to anyone.

I also saw Saving Mr. Banks today, and that was really good, too... but Frozen was just incredible.

If "Let it Go" doesn't win best song in the Oscars, I'll freak out. I've already watched the film twice and I've listened to the song another couple of dozen times on Youtube. It's absolutely incredible. Idina Menzel is a great singer, and the song is both wonderful musically and extremely touching. And it showcases Elsa as a new kind of Disney female.
