The Best Film Composer

I was having a discussion with my friends a few nights ago and I figure I'd pose the question here. Who do you think is the best film composer? There was a lot of John Williams thrown around for obvious reasons, but I kind of sided with a couple of my friends in that his music is probably the most iconic. Not necessarily the best. I think Hans Zimmer does some incredible stuff and it's hard to count out Howard Shore if only for LotR alone.

It's a tough question and I don't think any of us came up with an actual answer. I pitch it to you.

John Williams has put together probably the most impressive resume with how many scores he's done that people consider to be classics, but I'm not entirely sure I'd convince him to be the best. Hans Zimmer is also quickly working his way up to having quite the standing in the film score realm. Crazy how he started off with The Buggles

I'm going to give a shoutout to Nino Rota. He's most famous for composing the scores for The Godfather (parts I and II) and the most famous film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Absolutely gorgeous scores. Most of his work was on Italian films, though, so he probably isn't as famous worldwide as guys like Williams, Zimmer, etc.
