You couldn't even tell me the difference between a football that's 12 PSI vs 10 PSI. Were talking about two pounds of pressure, that is NOTHING. Y'all are still reaching, post in here when NE has been punished for deflating the balls and have been proven to have done. Game balls are checked hours before the game by the NFL and refs. NFL employees hold the balls on the sideline. Two fucking pounds of pressure.....GTFO, some of you hurt my brain.

You can definitely tell the difference between 12 PSI and 10 PSI. As a former football player in high school, they'd deflate the balls to 10-10.5 PSI when there would be rain which made it waaaaaaayy easier to catch and grip the ball. In high school, I never understood that because I always felt like the ball was too easy to catch and grip despite the weather climate.

In a football? You absolutely can notice.

Again, I think this had absolutely zero affect on the outcome of the game, but the Patriots cheated, so I have no problem with them losing draft picks over it. You cheat, you get punished.

2 PSI on a football is nearly 1/5 of the pressure in a football. You realize how much of a difference it makes to make something the much softer and that much easier to squeeze on a rainy day like it was in New England? It makes a huge difference. The quarterback can squeeze the ball more which makes it easier to grip and throw a tight spiral. A softer ball is easier for the receiver to catch and squeeze. A lighter ball is certainly easier for a running back to hold onto when he squeezes it.

And for the record in a playoff game, each team brings the balls that they use on offense for an NFL game. That means the Patriots were literally playing with different equipment on every single play than the Colts. Now does that mean the balls used provided the full difference in the game? Again, not likely, but the point is the Patriots were worried enough about the Colts and the weather that they decided they had to cheat to not risk losing the game. That in and of itself speaks volumes about how much it might make a difference.

Again, every play the Patriots were on offense was altered to some degree by having the illegal ball in play. And again, it's also a question of how many times have the Patriots cheated in the past and got away with it? If you are willing to do this once, odds are you were willing to do it more than once. And whose to say they haven't done it in a game where it did make all the difference in that game and got away with it? Whether it was cheating with deflated balls or in some other manner.

More to the point if you just give them a slap on the wrist that they don't even hardly notice do you really think that's going to stop them from cheating in some manner in the future?

Taking a couple draft picks from the team next year isn't nearly a harsh enough punishment and offers no deterrent from cheating in the future. If it's only draft picks, then I want a special draft pick to be named later to be included in the punishment. That draft pick will be used after Tom Brady has been retired for one full year. When the Patriots go 4-12, have a top 5 pick and are looking for a new franchise quarterback they shouldn't be able to get one.

But, I still say even that wouldn't be enough and there needs to be a more immediate impact felt on the team to stop them from doing this in the future. The NFL should step in and suspend Belichick immediately. He shouldn't have any contact with the team starting today for the next 6 months, ala Sean Payton and Bountygate. Make them play this Super Bowl without their coach and make them go through the whole player gathering process of the off-season without him as well.

After seeing this, the Patriots should not be punished. They may have knowingly tampered with the balls, but it is the referees' responsibility to make sure that the balls are in game condition. They did so, and apparently the balls passed inspection.

^^^ Whose to say they didn't at some point between 4:30 and 6:45 tamper with the balls? I mean the NFL themselves have said the balls were underinflated are we just supposed to forget we have this knowledge?

Who's to say that the deflation wasn't caused by the cold?

There's not enough evidence at the moment to say that the Patriots tampered with the balls after they were inspected and that people within the organization were the cause of the balls being deflated. You can't punish them without additional evidence.

I don't have the background in science to be able to do this, but it should be simple enough to come up with a formula to figure out to know how much pressure a ball kept in that temperature would lose.

Here's this:

Those PSI values are "positive pressure over ambient", so you need to add in the sea level pressure of 14.7 PSI (someone can probably get a barometer reading from game time for better accuracy). I get about 7.4% difference in air mass.

Notably, if you assume that game time was at about 0C (== 273K), then you'd expect that gas volume to produce a legal 12.5 PSI reading at ... (273*(14.7+12.5)/(14.7+10.5)) ... 295K. Or about .. 71F. Room temperature.

So assuming lots of unstated facts (like: at what temperature were the balls measured?) I think this turns out to be exactly equivalent to the "run the balls inside and make them legal there" theory. Probably not technically illegal unless the NFL rulebook was Boyle's law-aware.

It isn't a big deal. Rodgers doesn't even think there should be a limit. If Patriots did tamper with the balls, they should be punished because it is against the rules but it didn't make a difference not to mention I'm sure this isn't the first time it has happened, it is to me a non-story being blown out of proportion. Besides, apparently the underinflated balls were removed at halftime and look what happened in the second half.

It was around 50 degrees for that game, that weather no way is deflating a ball.

I haven't been following this story very closely but if the temperature was at fault, wouldn't the Colts be accused for the same thing? Also, the sheer number of deflated footballs is pretty suspect, especially if none of the others were. Just sayin'.. your evidence doesn't need a bunch of math, it's pretty blatant right there.

Still, I don't care. I think of a lot other ways to cheat that would make a bigger difference. I think the Patriots got in trouble the one time for doing something that supposedly/apparently "everyone else already did," so they get watched closer and scrutinized more. I still don't like 'em (at all), but I'm just saying it seems that way to me.

Now, a former Heisman winner who never quite made it at the pro level contends that most quarterbacks do something to the football.

“Every team tampers with the footballs,” Matt Leinart said on Twitter. “Ask any Qb In the league, this is ridiculous!!”

Leinart then carved out one exception: “Actually my guy @kurt13warner didn’t tamper w the footballs because he wore gloves,” Leinart said. “Used to irritate me..So correction, almost all QBs!”

Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal, who’s currently in Mobile, Alabama for the first significant pre-draft event, supports the notion that tampering is commonplace by noting that “NFL head coaches here at Senior Bowl seem downright offended that people think this deflation stuff is a big deal.”

So what you're saying is, every coach should be suspended for the next six months :P

This happened last time Patriots got caught "cheating," it was a "Well everyone else fuckin' does it" scenario. So why does everyone pick on the Pats? Don't get me wrong, I don't like the Pats one bit, myself, but if you're gonna punish one offender you gotta punish 'em all.
