How much does a tattoo hurt?

Postby Headlesspete » Sep 22, '15, 5:48 pm

So I've been humming about the idea for a long time of getting a tattoo, but I've always been put off by the pain. In all honestly, I'm a complete wuss when it comes to pain, and I'm worried I'll back out half way through aha! So if anyone has experience on getting a tattoo, I'd love to here it!

I want to mainly get one for my arms, ideally the end result would be a sleeve on both of them, but obviously starting small it would just be something on my bicep area.

It really just depends on where you get it. Some areas are much worse than others, depending on bone, fat, etc. I have two tattoos on my back that weren't all that painful. As for your arm, the bicep/outside of your arm doesn't really hurt, but the inside/backside of your arm is pretty painful.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance so I'm confident that I could get a tattoo pretty much anywhere and be fine, but I've seen people get tattoos and Be in tears. It just Depends on the person.

Location and pain tolerance is the key. I have multiple tats on my neck, back, shoulders, forearms ect..,

Your bicep area should not be to bad as long as the guy is not a dick and going to deep on purpose cause your a tat virgin. Do your research for an artist, always look at the portfolio of work and if you can talk to a previous client even better, the last thing you want is to get sold on an artist who fucks up your work. Different artists have different styles and have specialties, dont be afraid to question multiple artists in one shop to see who would be best suited for your piece.

Most people find the tattoo process to be spiritual or calming, its almost like a cleansing of the soul threw pain, find something that has meaning to you and express it threw art, the process is painful but its also rewarding.

Yeah like others said, the bicep shouldn't be bad, depending on how much muscle and/or fat you have on them. But make sure to go all in. This is a work of art that will be on you for the rest of your life. You'll need to do your research and find out which artist is the best for what you want. Generally the better an artist is the more expensive their work is. If you're not willing to shell out the dough for a great tat, you shouldn't be getting a tat. I have so many friends who have shitty tattoos because they wanted a tat but didn't want to spend the money. I think that's dumb as hell.

Areas with more fat or muscle are not as bad. Parts of your body that have less flesh and is more bony is more painful. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like every time I go back for another one, it hurts more than the last time. Perhaps because I always put it into my head that it didn't hurt that much. So when I go in there and I feel even the slightest bit of pain, I guess it feels more painful than it actually is.

Not really for me, they all felt the same except for the one on my neck, when he got on top of my vertebrae if hurt bad, but there is practically no fat or muscle there so i would expect it to hurt more.

Yeah it is not to bad depending on the location. Also want to add color matters. Some colors hurt more than others.
