Talk about movies and television in here!

I fucking hate superhero movies

Postby PorkChop » Dec 22, '14, 11:25 am

Seriously, they're just shit.

The superhero genre has been horribly overdone in recent years. It's gotten so bad that it makes the zombie genre seem fresh and imaginative, which takes some doing. I swear every other film is a superhero film these days, and most of them are seem to be remakes or unnecessary sequels to previous superhero movies. Many of them are completely unimaginative a follow the same formula to the previous films in the series - the only thing that changes is the villain. You can guarantee that everything else is more or less exactly the same.

The genre as a whole has been exhausted and driven into the ground. I genuinely don't understand how some people can just keep lapping up the tired, boring formula that superhero films bring (protagonist has superhuman powers or technology, encounters a villain who also has superhuman powers or technology, and a dastardly plan. After an initial struggle, the protagonist saves the day.)

Give me something different. The only superhero movies which have done so in recent years were the Batman films, which revolutionised the genre and gave it a completely different dynamic. This was probably the main reason as to why they became to popular - they weren't like any superhero film before. But it seems every superhero film after the Batman trilogy have just been the traditional, boring comic-book flick which stinks of a lack of imagination and courage to try something new from the writers.

I just superhero films unbearable, and I don't understand why they continue to be popular.

I like both superhero and zombie movies.

I feel as though we wouldn't get along if we knew each other in real life.

I do agree that superhero movies have been vastly overdone in recent years, but there are some that are good. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was really good, probably the best movie in the Avengers franchise so far (that or the first Iron Man, which was also really good). Xmen: First Class came out a couple years ago but I just recently saw that for the first time and thought it was very good. I heard Days of Future Passed was good but never saw it.

The first Thor was also a lot of fun, and while The Avengers wasn't great, it was definitely a fun theater experience and definitely not bad at all.

But I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was crap, and Thor 2 was meh. And with the way the genre is being flooded over the next five years or so, we're probably going to start seeing a higher percentage of crap coming through.

I'm certainly not at the point though where I dislike superhero movies as a rule. I still have some level of interest in the Avengers franchise.

Yeah, I agree with you. It's not so much that I hate superhero movies, but that there are far too many of them these days and most of them aren't very good. A well made superhero movie can still win me over, such as the first two films from the Dark Knight Trilogy or X-Men: First Class. But so many of them are just generic action flicks with no heart.

I don't really understand why the Avengers franchise is the one series that seems to get a free pass these days from both critics and fans. I haven't seen all the films from the franchise, but I've seen most of them and while only one of them was outright bad (Iron Man 2), none of them were particularly good. They're all pretty similar structurally, with pretty two dimensional characters and no emotional core. I wouldn't place a single film from the franchise in my Top 5 superhero films, but it seems there's enough hype behind the franchise that people ignore the actual quality.

Of the superhero movies that have been announced over the next few years, there aren't too many I'm interested in seeing, if any at all. I probably won't bother seeing any, unless I hear some reviews that interest me for whatever reason. The main thing I'd be hoping for is some substance from one or two of these.

I appreciate a superhero movie that is actually trying to put forward a clever story or actually has something to say. The Dark Knight Trilogy was interesting, because it took a superhero figure and showed us the consequences of his brand of justice. X-Men: First Class was interesting as an allegory for race relations, and showed the different points of view of those seeking equal rights. A peaceful approach vs a violent approach. I haven't seen Winter Soldier, but it seems like they actually tried something interesting with that film, letting Captain America's old time values act as a lens through which we could examine modern warfare. And the Incredibles (yeah, I'm counting it) was an awesome take on regular family issues and pressures in a larger than life context.

That's what I need in order to enjoy these films. Something to give the explosions some context and to make me care whether the heroes live or die. That's something that's missing with these films nowadays. Hollywood realised that superhero movies make money and now they're just churning them out without much thought. It's making them shallow and really uninteresting.

Just my two cents.

I'm seeing this subject pop up quite often, I'm about as tired of this sentiment as a lot of you guys seem to be of the movies themselves :lol

I'll say the same thing I said before, it's fine to be tired of the genre, you can just, y'know, not watch them, plenty of people still love this type of stuff and I guess explaining why I do might help.

Personally the reason I'm so invested specifically in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that I've loved the vast majority of what they've put out, Avengers and Guardians are some of the most enjoyable cinema experiences I've had. I trust that pretty much anything they put out will be fun to watch. I've bought into the universe and their ongoing stories, I'm intrigued to see what they do with their announced plans like Civil War, Doctor Strange, Ragnarok, the Inhumans etc. and how all the pieces fall into place for the Infinity War blowout.

Seeing more and more of my favourite comic book characters and stories play out in large scale movies is a novelty that has worn off for some but for me it is still fantastic and I remain excited for everything they put out in the next few years.

Well yeah, not watching them is an option. But you can still be annoyed by them for a variety of reasons. They're such a big part of our culture at the moment. If a bunch of your friends want to go and see something in the cinema, chances are it's going to be another superhero movie. Half of the year's big blockbusters are going to be superhero movies, so if you want to talk about movies with people at all that year, you're going to have to go see some of them. And even if you have no interest whatsoever in the films and actually do your best to avoid them, you're going to come across various news stories, teaser trailers and random bits of hype for various superhero films every other day just by being on the internet. It's almost inescapable by now.

I don't mind superhero movies existing, particularly the good ones. It'd just be nice to have a bit less of them and a little more of something else in its place. It'd be nice if we got more blockbusters that weren't extremely similar superhero movies. The option does exist to just watch more indie movies and animated movies instead (which is what I do), but I do like watching a good blockbuster and I do like going to see the movie that everyone else is going to see so that I can be part of the conversation. Unfortunately at the moment, the main conversation that movie fans are having at any given time seems to be about superheroes.

Its a simple concept,

Watch the movie for what it is intended for, the entertainment. If you invest your time into a superhero movie with no expectations but seeing shit blow up, a hot chick now and then, the good guys winning and some kick ass CGI then you shall not be disappointed. When you watch these movies with the idea that it will be an award winning breakthrough motion picture then you will most likely be disappointed.

these things are ment to be fun and entertaining not a masterpiece of cinema.

This is a sentiment I see thrown around a lot, and I think it misses the mark.

For starters, nobody watches superhero movies with the idea they'll be "award winning breakthrough" films. That's not why people don't like these films. That's being overly dismissive.

This argument seems to suggest that it's up to the audience to make sure they enjoy the films they watch. That if we don't enjoy a film, we're somehow at fault. We should have lowered our standards until the film suddenly became good. Which doesn't really stand up as a defense of the films in question. Obviously I'd much rather watch a good film than force myself to like a mediocre one.

Though I think what the argument is really saying, is that there's a distinction between intelligent, "artsy" films and accessible, fun films. And that a film can be entertaining without being too high brow. And while that's true, I think it misses the point. I like an entertaining action flick as much as anybody. I don't go into these films expecting artsy or high-brow. I just want them to give me a reason to care. I'm not expecting the next Citizen Kane, but I would be pretty damn happy with the next Die Hard.

After you've seen enough action films, hot women, large explosions and some one-liners isn't really worth the price of admission. I want to be invested in the story, to care about how the film ends or empathise with the heroes in some way. And some superhero movies and action movies do that really well, but others leave me a bit lukewarm. And lately it feels like style is being prioritised a bit over substance.

No offense to anyone who enjoys these films, I think they're very watchable but often ultimately forgettable. But I don't want people thinking that I only don't like them because I expect every film I watch to be Oscar bait. Half of my favourite movies are animated, and you don't tend to get storytelling much simpler than that.

The film industry is sequential. We're currently enduring through a heavy producer-orientated period where little - if any - creative trust and power is being vested in the filmmaker. Thankfully, there's almost no denying this (frankly) tiresome and insipid phase will abate and subside in time. Yes, they will milk superhero adaptations for all it is worth because they're obviously prodigiously profitable, but I am sure we will see the return of personal, more artist-driven filmmaking soon enough. The dynamics of today's system is reminiscent of the traditional Hollywood system, and all it takes is for a new generation of producers and executives to move in and implement change. This is precisely what happened with the New Hollywood movement of the late 60s up until the dissolution of United Artists in the early 80s, and I think we're slowly and progressively seeing it again today. I am not big on superhero adaptations, but, ultimately, they only constitute a small portion of what is being released. They really do not bother me at all. I am just happy that producers are finally taking notice of the commercial and critical successes of (predominately) artist-driven projects in the industry. I am also happy that the Weinstein brothers have reopened Miramax, which very well may signal the return of the independent cinema on the American circuit. I am rather optimistic for the future, and I'm sure we'll see the return of personal 'large-scale' filmmaking soon. We just have to be patient.

I find your argument is nothing more than a flimsy diatribe that underscores the malignancies of current cinema and its effect on the proficiently nefarious members of the trivial cult more commonly known as ghouls. It is clearly naught but a whimsical approach to an already exhausted state of intellect that has long since succumbed to its vices. But I digress.

I don't think I could ever take anything you say seriously as long as you have a chicken getting fisted infront of a chuck Norris shrine as your sig. :lol

Lets just keep quoting this giant thing.
