Changing of the Guard: Fun segment all around, from both a writing and reading standpoint. Johnny Briggs is best for business. This was the big surprise of the show and hopefully it delivered on that front as well.
I was looking forward to reading the backstage segment. Oh well.
2 Out of 3 Falls Match: Okay, here we go. Looking forward to this bad boy. The thing I like about this episode is that there’s basically only two matches (this one and the main event) so it’s easy to get into all the action and read it without getting worn out by a lesser match. Gonna review this thing fall by fall.
Fall #1: Good start to the match, and I liked how the commentators referenced Reece’s promo from the week before when Reece said that he would use his mistakes to grow as a competitor. The Pounce? Shades of Monty Brown there. I do like how the styles of both men were described here. Reece with the quickness and flashy moves, and Orion with more of a power game.
Fall #2: Awesome start to round two with the Hurricarana to the outside by Reece. It actually felt a bit unrealistic for Bishop to kick out of that move so soon after getting pinned by Reece’s finisher in Fall #1. I would have had the commentators play up how Bishop knew he couldn’t afford to lose another fall, so he desperately used all of his strength to kick out. Moving on, great way to shift the advantage back to Bishop with the Flapjack to the steps. Of course Bishop had to even out the score at 1-1, now let’s move on to…
Fall #3: Reece has really stolen the show in this match, even though Orion wins at the end. That’s kind of a cool dynamic that makes both guys look good. I bet nobody expected Barry to cost Reece the match here! We were gonna do something between Barry and Ace at first, but with Ace no-showing the last two shows I decided to move Barry to a better opponent because he deserves it. Overall, this was a great 2/3 Falls Match that felt like the feud-ender between Reece and Bishop.
I only have two minor criticisms with this match. First, the show took place in Reece’s hometown (Badlands, yes I confused which state it was in, lol), but the hometown advantage wasn’t really played up. Second, it ended a bit abruptly. I would have liked to see a line or two describing Reece and Bishop’s reactions after Bishop got the pinfall. Like I said, minor critiques.
In Times of Need: Oh fuck yes, Maggie and Zaid! These guys are always gold together. Magnum may not need Zaid’s help now, but after the next segment he may change his mind…
Locked Horns: Somebody gonna get they ass kicked, somebody gonna get they wig split. Just a good old fashioned slugfest here, not quite Gabriel Reece’s cup of tea but still damn effective. Alex’s line “Magnum Phillips has finally met his match” is basically the perfect thing to say here. Gryphon’s size makes him the perfect foe for Magnum, and you gotta wonder if Gryphon will be the ONE. Will be interesting to see if this segment affects the Magnum/Zaid relationship.
The Road to Ruin: It’s good to see this feud really coming together after the slow burn that was built up from Resurgence to Genocide. It seems as though Dylan has the upper hand for now, we’ll see how long that will last.
Wrong Turn: Aaaand it’s Hess/Daz time. I like how Daz didn’t say anything, as opposed to vocally telling Hess to fuck off. It really sells the state Daz is in while still moving the story along. Daz is definitely at his most vulnerable, which is the worst time to be going up against Amos Hess (is there a good time?). This should be interesting moving forward.
I’ll echo The Legend’s comment about the promofest on this show. One of the matches wasn’t turned in, but I do see the point he’s making.
Gathering of the Clouds: Not sure about the “undefeated for 10 months” line because while it is technically true, in PCW time it’s only been about 2-3 months since the Oblivion PPV where they won the titles. I did love the “God was on our side” line though, haha. The interaction between Roxanne and Melissa makes me want that future 6-person tag match we’ve been talking about. Renzo suddenly breaking up the negotiations, vintage Renzo! Great brawl to end this one, even the ladies got it on. One thing I’ve noticed with Stratusfied619’s writing is that sometimes you tend to write in big paragraphs. Just a suggestion, but I recommend dividing your paragraphs up a little bit so they’re easier to get through. HOLY SHIT, Quintuple Suplex? What the fuck!? I didn’t see that coming, lol. The other big takeaway from this segment for me was how dominant NRC were built up to be by the commentators. It does make you question if any team in PCW can take the belts off NRC.
Game of Champions: Holy shit, Bernard incorporating “It’s Munging Time!” into his entrance may be the best thing ever. I think the overwhelming boos for Bernard as soon as his music starts up may be a bit unrealistic, because he hasn’t really done anything that despicable yet. Maybe even for Dan Morrison too, because he’s relatively new to the PCW fans. I could picture a lot of people hating Dan Morrison, but maybe describe it as “more than half the fans” or something like that. Anyway, on to the match. A match I’ve looked forward to reading for a long time.
Drake Bernard vs “The Mexican Sensation” Aristeo Naolin, Jr: Okay, just to warn you it might take me a couple sit-downs to get through this beast. I’m prepared to pull an all-nighter! I am! We already have an electric atmosphere right off the bat, with the crowd chanting “Same Old Shit!” at these two competitors. A masterful start to the match - as soon as the bell rings Bernard attempts to play mind games by sitting on the top turnbuckle. This incredible maneuver causes Aristeo to actually fall out of the ring and then go through the announce table. Bernard continues to sit on the top turnbuckle as if he used no effort at all. As Aristeo attempts to recover in the ruins of the announce table, the referee starts to count him out. He gets to a count of five as the crowd starts booing Aristeo Naolin, realizing what a knob he is compared to the great Drake Bernard. Dan Morrison stands near the apron of the ring, filling his client’s ears with words of wisdom said to be passed down through generations of the Morrison family. At last, Aristeo gets back in the ring and ties up with Bernard. The two go back-and-forth for another 23 pages of awesomeness that would make even Daz jealous, until at last Bernard manages to knock Aristeo out of the ring and wins by count-out. Bernard has now beaten an 18-time world champion, and it’s reasonable to assume that Nick Foster may be next. See, now this is called a review!
Fallout: Well written segment, to the surprise of no one. Did Evans succeed in ending Andrew's career? Only time will tell.
Stars Aligned: Looking forward to this Haynes promo. This “Man of the people” approach is cool, and a good way to establish Haynes as a notable babyface. The Orion interruption seemed to come a little too quickly, I would have liked to see Haynes talk a bit more to expand his character. Both of these guys, Haynes and Bishop are red-hot right now coming off of their last feuds, so it should be interesting to see how this one develops.
Evans/Foster vs. Kaiser/Thomas: Four men, six world titles between them. In that sense this is the most loaded Onslaught match we’ve had so far, so let’s get down to business. What an entrance for Thomas! Kaiser and Foster squaring off at first? I dig it. Great way to tag in Thomas, lol. Looks like Prophet started this match off, top shout mate. Things are getting even better with this Thomas vs. Foster showdown. I’m interested to see how this plays out. Evans breaking things up before a second round of Thomas/Foster, that was great. Haha, Evans literally “shooing” Foster out of the ring is hilarious. This match has been really fun so far. BTW, Str8shooter had a lot to do during this show, lol. Thomas throwing Evans into Kaiser? I can just picture Johnny Briggs sitting in his office backstage, enjoying the hell out of his creation.
And now it’s Kaiser vs. Evans revisited! “YOU BOTH SUCK” chant! Jesus this match is a ton of fun. I’ll tell you what, Cavanah probably isn’t used to being on the receiving end of a low blow. FCC Outa Nowhere to end it and Evans standing tall to end the show. He be a' comin’ for that world title!
This show felt pretty easy to get through. I like that in a show.
