What do you think of Insanity?

I've been going to a few high intensity workout classes lately and have found out that they also do a monthly insanity plan, where they hold classes every morning and give you a diet plan to follow for that month. It's £150 for the month and I am tempted to do it, but wanted to see how worth it it will be.

You can get all of that information by doing research for free.

I don't really have experience with the Insanity workout, so unfortunately I can't give you much input. All I can say is working-out and diet plans are a lot of self-discovery. What works for some people doesn't work for others.

I don't see the harm in giving it a shot, you might not like it and sure, that can seem like it's a waste of money, but it really isn't. I am where I am today, because I have tried a lot of different things, and I have discovered what does and doesn't work well for me. I got new shoes and jogged for a while, then it started to hurt me knees, well now I know I don't agree with jogging. I got a bike and tried cycling, and I absolutely hated it. Now I know cycling isn't for me. I went to the gym, and tried certain workout cycles, some are good, some I feel like I don't get much feedback from. I still have those shoes, I still have that bike, and sure they may be collecting dust, but I know what my body agrees with and what it does not.

Re: Fitness AMA/Discussion

Postby Kyle » Oct 20, '14, 11:34 pm

I think this is as good a time as ever to dip my toe in this discussion. I play tennis every summer and have for the last 13 years. The last few years have been more serious and I'm playing more than I ever have - this year was the biggest yet. It's October, so the season is pretty much done (though I will play in the winter occasionally). In the spring I was around 210-215 pounds and now I'm 200 pretty much on the dot. However, winters in Ottawa are cold and dreary and it never leaves me with a lot of motivation to be active, at least not since I stopped skiing a number of years ago. I'm likely to gain it all back unless I stay active.

I want to start working out to get fit for next year, as doing so will help my game, and to help me mentally (working towards a goal, doing something worthwhile - let alone the good it does to get exercise). Once I'm in the process of working out, all is good. It's getting there that really gives me a hard time. (Having said that, know that I have been that way my whole life with just about everything.)

I was running a few years ago but I don't think my body can handle that anymore. Because of my CP my right side is much weaker than the left so I've had foot, ankle, and leg problems the last few years of playing tennis at a demanding physical level. I also want to build my stamina to greater heights, which I've sort of been working on by rowing for up to 30 minutes at a high level. I know for one that I need to incorporate interval training into because that's what tennis is all about: 10-20 seconds of high intensity and then 30 seconds of resting your heartbeat to reset until the next point starts - and that process lasts for hours.

I am sincerely looking forward to a long winter filled with hard nights of getting fit!

You could also consider swimming! I know swimmers have a ton of endurance, and if your joints are giving you some issues swimming is accommodating to that. Just a thought, I have no idea how accessible a pool is to you.

Yes, I think I'm going to swim a lot this winter. Good for the body.

Has anyone here ever taken their heart rate?

There's a UFC fight tomorrow night between two guys who have heart rates of 34 and 32bpm respectively. That's crazy. I'm currently at 72bpm when resting.

I have never taken my heart rate. I am sure I have had it done during a physical exam, but I don't remember the results at all.

Nice job losing the weight, even jumping into the holiday season. I have been meaning to ask others how things have gone for them in terms of training schedule and diet.

I got sick and the last week has been dragging so hard, my stamina levels were down, I was weaker when I thought I was better but I wasn't. It was rough. I felt like I was good but when I started working hard I got that deep sore in my lungs and it just didn't feel right. So frustrating.

I have also gone up 4lbs and the fact I'm not stronger with that irks me a lot. I hope it's just water retention and junk from being sick. Yesterday was my first normal gym workout and I still felt some lack of stamina but at least the lifting numbers were there.

So how has everyone been holding up in the cold weather and land of the food aplenty?

If I remember correctly I was about 199.5 pounds at the end of October. Weighed in today at 191, been running pretty consistently and having some more fiber in my diet for breakfast. Feeling kinda sexy. Btw, that shirtless pic has helped me snag semi nude photos from three chicks. Aye :tim

Re: Fitness AMA/Discussion

Postby HardcoreLegend » Dec 06, '14, 6:49 pm

So I ended up doing Insanity for the month of November. I was up every day at 6AM, 5 days a week to go to the class. The first week was tough, I love my bed so much so crawling out of bed as the mornings were starting to get dark was awful. But come the second week, it was no trouble. I actually found myself enjoying being in the routine of going to sleep early and getting up early.

The actual workouts were tough, yet enjoyable. I pushed myself enough, but not to a point where I wasn't happy. If I wanted to slow my pace down then I did and there was no problem in doing that.

Diet wise, I tried to follow the meal plans that had been suggested but I decided just to eat healthier rather than follow the strict diet. I cut out all processed food from my diet, no junk food, no alcohol, etc.

I ended up going from a 34" waist to a 29" waist, so to say I'm pleased with the results is an understatement!

The annoying thing is though that now we're in December, it's hard to keep up the good work. I have a few Christmas nights out planned and my mother has already started filling the cupboards with the usual Christmas foods. I'm not worrying too much though as I've been considering doing their January class as I'm not quite where I want to be with my body and everyone puts on a little something over the festive period.

Like a lot of people, I completely over indulged over the Christmas time. I ate foods I wouldn't normally eat, did no exercise at all and I'm sure I spent at least a week of December drunk. So January came and I signed up for another round of insanity. I honestly felt like I'd undone all the hard work I had done in November, but thankfully I only put an inch and a half on my waist, making my starting point 30.5 inches.

I've just completed my first week and it's a slightly different plan to the last one I did. Now we do one day insanity, then one day functional training consisting of kettle bells/TRX/weights/battle ropes. I'm not quite into it just yet, but I think going into the second week I might be.

I'm also wanting to add some extra exercise into my days but am not sure what. I don't like running. I've tried and just don't enjoy it. Was thinking of swimming, but I haven't swam properly in so long.

In this first week I've also struggled with diet. There's still temptations left over from Christmas, boxes of biscuits and chocolates so going into the second week I need to keep an eye on that.

Throw the shit food out, then you don't have to deal with temptation.

I had the same conversation with the mother in law, she wanted a plan because she wanted to lose some weight. When she told me that she couldn't start until she had eaten the rest of the leftovers and cake and biscuits and donuts I just informed her that she would remain fat and moved on.

If it was just me I would have done, but since I still live at home with the family, I can't. I have told them to hurry up and eat it all so I won't be tempted. It's the same at work. We ended up with about 6 tins of biscuits from customers, but because there's other people at work, it's not fair for me just to throw them out.
