Steven Gerrard announces international retirement

He had a good career with England and it's about time he called it a day.

As long as this doesn't mean Wilshere will be playing more :squint

Wonderful servant of his country, he ought to be proud - second highest capped out-field player ever behind Beckham. Definitely the right decision though, particularly with the added strains of Europe this season.

This will likely see Rooney named the next captain, something I'm against. Naming Rooney as Gerrard's successor is almost like what the Cricket team has to suffer through with Cook - at this point I'd probably give it to Joe Hart due only to the fact that he's passionate, vocal and doesn't play shit.

I guess this only means ONE thing...

come on down captain Wayne!

But yeah, like other notable midfielders, unable to replicate his performances for club at international level. The deep lying role for England was OTT in terms of the interest it generated, he struggled to replicate his club form in that role. Due to maybe not having another extra body in midfield but tbh, I unsure he would have replicated his club success.

No outstanding candidates for the job so it's Wayne time!

What makes Rooney an outstanding candidate for the job? Joe Hart would be a far better option.

First part of my post was sarcastic. No great options but why not Rooney? Hart isn't a great keeper but has solidified the position and tbh his club future could be in jeopardy. Pellegrini has signed his former Malaga keeper Cabellero and all it's going to take is one error from Hart and he'll be benched.

Rooney's got experience of captaincy and tbh, I wouldn't mind Cahill getting the nod. He's played outstandingly well at Chelsea, vocal, but again difficult to judge how he'd captain England. Might benefit from vice captaincy.

I'd choose Cahill, but then again I'm really not a fan of Rooney right now.

Rooney could seek solance in a granny again if he misses out on the United captaincy to RVP and misses out on the England job to Cahill/Hart. He's begging for an armband!
