Andy Serkis should be nominated come awards season

I've just got back from watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and I have to say it was terrific, as far as sequels go it's one of the best I've ever seen - just a bloody good film. Andy Serkis shines yet again as Caeser and I'm not surprised to find his performance has been met with critical acclaim, he was brilliant and cemented his legacy once more as the master of motion-capture, CGI performance. (Tony Kebbell as Koba was equally as impressive)

Question is, does the fact Serkis' performs using motion capture limit him come awards season? 'Dawn' is a big budget, 'summer popcorn' film and on the whole those types of movies don't see much recognition by the Academy or the HFP or whomever it may be - Heath Ledger is the only actor I can think of in recent time who has had accolades go his way. I often wonder if they're more inclined to ignore someone like Serkis because they don't physically see him on screen and can't decide how much of the performance is Serkis' himself or assisted by a visual effects team.

I know it's laughably early to even talk about awards and what not but I just had to declare how awesome I thought Andy Serkis was in this movie and that I definitely think he should be considered at the end of the year. Go watch Dawn people!

I saw the movie last night and thought it was brilliant. I know Serkis has previously been nominated for awards that don't normally recognise actors who have done similar things. He was amazing in this though. I know what you mean about it may bring hard to distinguish how much of it was him and how much of it was effects. But I think I majority of it was him. That's what motion capture is. I watched many making of videos after I watched Rise and they show a split screen of Serkis acting it out and then how it appears in the movie and it's exactly the same. Even the director and crew remarked on how everything portrayed by Caeser was all Serkis. And the range of emotions he shows in this movie is incredible. But will the Academy recognise him though? Perhaps they would, but knowing them, it would probably be for all the wrong reasons. They would probably only do it as done kind of publicity thing.

If Serkis never received any recognition for his role as Gollum in what were actually critically acclaimed films and awards darlings, he'll never get it for an Apes film.

Though I do agree that mo-cap actors deserve just as much recognition as regular actors if their work merits it, and Serkis's generally does.

He really is incredible and I'm glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
