Who would you cast as the next Indiana Jones?

Postby Everlong » Jun 04, '14, 2:12 pm

So rumors have been swirling for a while that Disney is going to resurrect the Indiana Jones franchise and "James Bondify" it, by having a new actor portray Indy in his younger years.

The question is, who would you have play the role? Obviously they'll never match up to Harrison Ford, and I'm not even sure I like the idea of them doing these new movies, but if it's going to happen I'd prefer that it be done well, I guess.

Bradley Cooper and Robert Pattinson have already been the subject of rumor. Cooper I could see, Pattinson not so much.

Anyone have any ideas?

No one, I'd leave the series alone.

Forgot to give my choices. Here are a few that could be good:

Image

Chris Pine of Star Trek fame. I think he's got the gritty hero thing going for him, could be good at it.

Image

Karl Urban. Solid actor, has action movie experience. Downside is that at 41, Disney may consider him too old to be the lead in a franchise reboot.

Image

Bradley Cooper. I think he'd be a solid choice and he's an established acting talent.

I would too, but that's not answering the question.

This is a tricky one... Since Nathan Fillion is both too old and not famous enough (if they're looking at those two), I'd maybe go for Chris Hemsworth because he has charisma and can carry that kind of light comedy.

Someone with a touch more of the everyman would be better though - I just can't really think of anyone who fits the Indy ideal in my head. Neither Cooper or Pattinson do either; Cooper's too old if they're going for a young Indy anyway, right? And I'd be very worried about Pattinson's ability to handle that kind of tone - it needs a deft touch.

Personally, I don't find Chris Pine to be compelling to watch like Ford, which I'd definitely want.

Urban's fantastic but, yes, likely too old. :(

Eh... Bradley Cooper then.

I just hate how there seems to be a growing trend of unnecessary continuations of legendary film series lately. I wish that people would respect them and leave them consigned to history without tampering with them and their legacy.

...however I will be watching Star Wars 7 :lol

Hemsworth could be a good one actually, that would be interesting. Michael Fassbender's another I just thought of who could be good, but is likely too old.

He sometimes approaches Littlefinger levels of slipping back into his irish accent, though. :P But I do think he's pretty great.

Could Jake Gyllenhaal take time out from laughing at food to put in a performance here? I actually think he might be pretty good. And he's not as beefcake as Hemsworth (who I also like, I'm just not sure that look would work for Indy).

Honestly, I don't think "too old" is that big of a problem. Sure, Harrison Ford is probably too old to really pull off the stunts in a believable manner, but one of the charms of Indiana Jones is that he is kind of grizzled, kind of world-weary.

I think Bradley Cooper is a spot-on choice for the role. He's a very good actor, you can buy him doing the stunts, he has the look and attitude I think of when I picture "Younger Indy", but he still has that air of experience.

I am not as opposed to this idea of making Indiana Jones a Bond-like series as most seem to be. Would it be nice if they left it alone? Sure, but if they want to reboot it and have him go on a bunch of new adventures, I'd welcome it. It could be a lot of fun.

Wait, what's meant by "younger years"? I thought we were talking about his adventures prior to the original movies or something... is it just more of the character in his prime. Because that makes sense, and I am very silly.

I think I got put off by Pattinson being considered. At least, I'm going to blame him. :D I do have to withdraw any objection to Cooper then, although some other actors could be good also.

I think it makes more sense to reboot this series than many others - the movies were pretty self contained... they just have to get the tone right.

I was imagining the movies would be someone in their 20s or 30s, but who knows, they could even go with an actor in his 40s.

My top choice would be Karl Urban but as I said, they may feel he's too old. Cooper would also be good.
