Star Wars: Episode VII - Discussion thread!

Talk about movies and television in here!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII to begin filming in May

Rumor has it that JJ is planning on using a lot more practical effects in the new trilogy to help bring back the feel of the original trilogy. Which I fucking hope is true, because overuse of CGI killed the prequel trilogy and has been one of the biggest factors as to why the new Hobbit movies have sucked so hard.

Here's hoping practical effects come back into fashion :tim

He certainly seems to be doing thing right so far. When the film was announced I really didn't want it to happen, but I'll probably end up seeing it the day it comes out at this rate.

I wish there was a new Knights of the Old Republic (not that shoddy MMO) now. I'm itching to play some sweet Star Wars games and there aren't many good ones to choose from.. and Disney killed Star Wars 1313.

Practical effects is a good move, though an obvious one after the backlash to the last films. All of the blue screening in the prequels made everything seem very phony. Actors weren't reacting to things that were happening right in front of them and the films felt lifeless because most scenes consisted of actors talking while either standing or sitting really still - the reason being that they couldn't see what was around them, so moving around a set was impractical.

Use of practical effects is probably in Abram's wheelhouse too, so he should manage that aspect of the film quite well. He's always been good at adding excitement, pace and spectacle to his films and they always look impressive too.

That doesn't stop me from thinking that he's not the right man for the job, as I still believe that he's too shallow a director and is likely to create something derivative and contrived. But I at least have faith that it will be a visually impressive film. The prequels look great in stills, but failed visually because the pretty images were constantly at war with the story and performances. Abrams should be able to marry the two.

^ Sometimes those "types of directors" can surprise you. Singer surprised me with the new X-Men flick.

Huge, awesome news:

An Academy Award winner and muthafuckin' Brienne of Tarth. Awesome additions to the cast, especially considering it needed some more female star power!

Looks like an upgrade X-Wing using the original sketch designs. Cool.
