The Pirates of the Caribbean films are horrible

Postby PorkChop » Apr 12, '14, 5:49 pm

So, over the last few days I've been making my way through this series. I enjoyed them when I was younger (well, the first two films) but as I've grown older and have developed a more critical eye in regards to films, I've realised that the POTC series is absolutely horrid.

Don't get me wrong - Caribbean piracy is an awesome idea for a film, there's some cool visual effects, good music and brilliant settings - but that's it. The plot throughout each film is tediously dull, the comedy/adventure genre is a horrible fit and Jack Sparrow is the most unlikeable, annoying protagonist I can think of. Johnny Depp's cringeworthy quirkiness makes every one of his scenes unbearable. Accompanying him, we have two very bland characters in William Turner and Elizabeth Swann. They're not half as annoying as Sparrow but equally as frustrating, just for different reasons - Sparrow is frustrating as he's just a prick, whereas with Turner and Swann, I'm frustrated as I find myself wanting to care for them... I just can't.

The films just aren't enjoyable at all. While making this thread, I found out that there's a fifth one to be released in 2016, too. This absolutely does not need to happen under any circumstances. Ugh.

The first one is still one of my favourite films ever. Then they just got progressively worse. The second was somewhat enjoyable I suppose. I was not too impressed with the third one though. I have yet to see the fourth.

I liked them, but I don't watch movies to critic them, I watch movies to be entertained, and they are entertaining

I thought the first film was quite fun. It was just kind of a wacky ride of a movie. The plot was relatively simple and little about it was particularly memorable but it had some fun action scenes, Johnny Depp was charismatic in his role as Jack Sparrow and it was enough to put a smile on my face the first couple of times I watched it.

I imagine it has probably deteriorated over time, partially due to context. People know now that the sequels have been awful and it's hard to put that out of your mind. Plus, Johnny Depp's then endearing quirkiness has by now become a tiresome habit of his. Something that's almost becoming a crutch of his and making each of his performances a little more infuriating than the last.

The sequels were just terrible though. I haven't seen the fourth, but the third was bad and the second was one of the worst films I've ever put myself through. It kept replicating the kind of stuff that was in the first film, but turning up the volume too much, or making it too quirky or just generally missing the mark. And for some reason, everyone on the cast suddenly became a pirate. The writing was just really lazy.

I'm sure Porkchop watches movies to be entertained also, he just thought the films were bad. :lol I never understand it when people say this. People don't want to dislike films, they never go in with the intention of criticizing them. It's just that not every movie is going to be a good one.

Eh, I like the first one, but the rest are really bad (the second and third at least - I couldn't fool myself any longer after no. 3). I can't agree on wanting to like Bloom's character though - to me he was by far the most annoying character in the movies.

I think all 3 films are very fun and entertaining to sit down and watch. And Captain Jack Sparrow is one the best characters ever. I'm kinda surprised to find out he isn't as beloved as I thought he was. :lol You're all a bunch of negative nancies. Although I was disappointed by the 4th film.

He was fun in the first movie, then they just killed him with overexposure and overquirkiness. :P He was a character that would be better if not seen too much in any case. He went from being charming, eccentric and interesting in the first film to being an irritating cartoonish twat in the second film without the performance really changing that much. They just jumped the shark in terms of how they were writing him and the situations they were putting him in.

One of the films featured a bunch of different Jack Sparrows hanging out talking to each other and being quirky together. It was at this point that I realised this franchise was trying way too fucking hard. :lol

The jar of dirt symbolises the film.

The first one was a good film, but they had to milk it for all it's worth and made those other 3. I still haven't seen the 4th one yet, and I don't plan to.

Meh I've watched the first three (didn't know they made a fourth) and enjoyed them. They drag a bit and are far from perfect but they're fun I guess.

Meh, they're okay films (well the ones I've seen anyway). Definitely don't think they're worth all the hype though, everyone I know thinks they're amazing films and I just don't see the appeal.

I think the 3rd one, bar Depp overuse, is actually a pretty underrated film.
