Double post, but whatever, I'm mad. As a preface to this rant I should add that my dad is a Coventry fan, and if I had to support a second team, it would be Coventry.
When Arsenal play Coventry in the cup tomorrow night, several Coventry supporters will be using the occasion as a platform to protest against the ownership of the club, and rightly so. It's being shown live on BT Sport so it's a good platform to have their voices heard.
In brief: Coventry's current owners, 'Sisu' who are a hedge fund, use money from shady, anonymous investors. In 2012, Sisu decided that the rent they were paying to ACL (Arena Coventry Limited, who own the Ricoh Arena) was too much and so they refused to carry on paying. The off-pitch struggles messed up the whole club, and they got relegated into League One and went into administration. They then relocated to Northampton's ground as the rent would be cheaper - however, the club are only allowed to stay there for 3 to 5 years maximum. Northampton is 35 miles from Coventry.
The situation as it stands:
- Sisu have claimed that they have been looking to build a new stadium for the club since 2012, "in the Coventry area". Despite this, they haven't purchased land, haven't discussed the project with any building authorities and haven't submitted a planning applications.
- As I said earlier, the people behind Sisu are anonymous investors. There is very little information as to who is making their decisions, aside from one woman, Joy Seppala. However, she is very secretive and again, there is very little information about her.
- Sisu do pretty much what they want with no regard to the heritage and identity of the club, or the interests of the supporters who have stuck by the club throughout these hard times.
- ACL offered Sisu a deal which could have seen Coventry return to the Ricoh Arena rent-free for the rest of the season. Sisu turned this offer down.
- A majority of City fans are boycotting games at Northampton and attendances there are hitting record lows with an average of around 2000 (including visiting fans) but there’s been a huge increase in numbers going to away games.
- There is no indication of when, if ever, Coventry City FC will return to Coventry.
A positive note is that the manager, Steven Pressley, is performing miracles - Coventry have scored 55 goals in 26 league games and if it weren't for the 10 point deduction as a result of going into administration, they'd be in the play-off places. Several members of the side are academy players as Pressley can't make any new signings, so that's quite an achievement.
I hope Wenger puts out the Arsenal B or C squad tomorrow night, and Coventry get through. They need the payday, even if Sisu would just waste the money - but most importantly, they need further platforms to bring attention to the injustices going on behind the scenes at their club. People need to get behind Coventry and force these corrupt owners out - we've seen it plenty of times before, people who take over a club and have no idea how to run it. Look at the Venky's for example - they took the heart out of Blackburn. The same is happening here and regardless of what team you support, you should rally behind Coventry City and pray for this mess to be sorted out.
