Part of me would like to yell 'Halo' or some other bland yet popular game that I can't understand the appeal of. Or some major disappointment like LA Noire. But I'd feel dishonest. There are worse games out there, without a doubt. I've owned a few terrible ones in my day.
My usual answer for this question is Rise of the Robots. This was a beat em up game for the Sega Genesis. I was probably 7 years old when this came out, it looked fantastic visually and it featured robots fighting more fucking robots. I need not tell you that the 7 year old Hanley! lost his fucking mind waiting to play what must clearly be the best video game of ALL TIME.
It didn't work out that way though. I was a fan of beat em ups, but the controls on this one were really unresponsive and horrible. The advanced graphics had led the developers to include very few moves for each character. And in the one player mode you were forced to play the very crappest robot, as he fought against others much larger than him. With a much longer reach. Things only got worse in 2 player mode, where player one still had to play as the crap robot, while player 2 could play as a variety of robots, many of whom took up about half of the screen and could reach the opposing player from anywhere on the screen.
It was hilariously bad.
