I'm a huge fan of the series and I assume at least some of you are as well. Let's see the numbers

I went with Empire.

A New Hope is also a great film and a perfectly acceptable answer.

If you vote for anything else, you're objectively wrong and should feel shame.

... in my opinion ... :D

Nice. As a stand alone film I think that A New Hope is stronger, but ESB is my go-to option to watch most times. It's so magical and easily one of the best sequels of all time. The ending never fails to brings me to tears. That music... man, it gets me every time.

On an only semi-related note, The Last Jedi is fine. It's not a great movie. It's not a terrible movie. It's just a movie. The amount of hot takes about that film over the last year plus have been infuriating. If you're a fan of Youtube video essays (guilty) these have been inescapable since the movie was released.

It was more creative than a Star Wars film had been in decades with a couple of stronger characters than usual, but the dialogue sucked, there were some seriously cringey moments, and the casino planet sequence was boring as fuck.

It didn't ruin the franchise. It didn't save the franchise. Rey did not destroy the concept of female protagonists forever. The whole thing wasn't an elaborate piece of SJW propaganda. Nobody fucking cares about what you think Luke Skywalker should have been when he grew up. Stop making such a big deal about such an ordinary film. It's not remarkable enough for strong opinions and conspiracy theories.

Definitely ESB for me.

Without having seen Solo, I'd rank them thusly:

1: Empire Strikes Back
2: A New Hope
3: Return of the Jedi
4: The Force Awakens
5: Rogue One
6: Revenge of the Sith
7: The Last Jedi
8: Attack of the Clones
9: The Phantom Menace

Cool. I think my ranking would be:

1. A New Hope
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Return of the Jedi
4. The Phantom Menace
5. The Last Jedi
6. The Force Awakens
7. Revenge of the Sith
8. Rogue One
9. The Ewok Adventure
10. The Star Wars Holiday Special (I honestly love this one, despite it technically not being a film)
11. Ewoks: The Battle for Endor
12. Attack of the Clones
13. Solo
14. The Clone Wars

I'm surprised to see Rogue One ranked ahead of Return of the Jedi. Any chance that you would be willing to elaborate? I think Rogue One was really good but for me not on the level of the original three.

Side question: who is still invested enough to see all of these?

I've made an effort to watch the new trilogy, but I didn't bother with Solo or Rogue One. Not bothered with any of the spin-offs to be honest. I'll watch the next film in the trilogy, but if that's not good I'll probably tap out of the franchise until I hear one getting completely rave reviews.

Star Wars is oddly popular for a franchise consisting of - on average - below average films.

Yeah, not me for sure. It's crazy in that I'd have gobbled up just about any Star Wars media before The Last Jedi, but that movie really killed my interest in the franchise. It was infuriating. I didn't see Solo because it came out just six months after, had a story I wasn't interested in and because I was still annoyed with how TLJ turned out. And it's hard for me to work up any interest at all in Episode IX because of TLJ as well. And this is from someone who purchased premiere tix for TFA and TLJ as soon as they were available.

Star Wars' popularity is really carried by a) the strong original series and b) the extended universe of books, games etc. There are many more good to great Star Wars video games than movies. Heck, I think there's a decent argument that the very best Star Wars story is a video game (Knights of the Old Republic).

I like being different... :D

But seriously, I LOVE Star Wars. All of it, even Jar Jar. And Jedi is great, I love how bad ass Luke was. But it had the same fault Empire did. It cant stand on it's own. The reason Empire is edged out by A New Hope for me, is ANH is it's own contained story. It is a good movie and ypu require no other context. Empireneeds ANH to exist. If you had never seem ANH, you'd have no fucking clue what's going on. Even more so with Jedi. You can watch Rogue One as it's own sci-fi movie and it holds up. Cameos aside, there are only new characters. None of them existed before the opening crawl and [showhide=]they all die[/showhide] . They even explain what a Death star is, becaise at the time(in universe) no one knew it existed.

Another plus for Rogue One, is it doesn't suffer from villian fatigue. You only have Orson Krennic and then [showhide=]Vader[/showhide] at the real end but he[showhide=]like Leia[/showhide] is fan service not a plot point. Jedi was overloaded. You have Vader, Palpatine, Jabba, Boba Fett, Piett, and Jerjerrod(one of my favorite Imperials btw). Yeah they were fun but it's a bit much.

Also the "three battles at once" in Rogue One seemed more connected to me. You have a group of soldiers(and a few ship) trying to buy time for the three person strike team who are trying to steal the data to send to the fleet who is in battle but trying to hold off long enough to get the data amd run away. While the Endor Strike Team is in battle to shut down the shield generator, there still seemed like a lack of true connection to me. Amd while Luke v Vader needed to happen storyline wise, it doesn't really have any tactical purpose.

Finally I really liked the theme of Rogue One being sacrifice. Ground crew knew before the mission that they likely weren't coming back. The flight crew who got through the gate before it closed(and those who tried) knew they likely were not leaving the planet and naval fleet knew they had to hold off long enough to get the information. It was all or nothing. Yes there was some sacerfice in Jedi, but Jedi was more about being awexome(which it did well)

Plus Y-WINGS are my favorite ships in Star Wars and they kicked ass in Rogue One.
