2019 NFL Mock Draft

Postby The Legend » Feb 01, '19, 12:55 pm

1. Arizona Cardinals – Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio State
The Arizona Cardinals have plenty of holes to fill on a team devoid of talent at many of the most important positions. They did draft a quarterback in Josh Rosen last year that could develop into a franchise passer if give the proper opportunity with the right talent group around him. That’s where Bosa steps in, Arizona was bottom five in both completion percentage allowed and sacks, getting an improved pass rush will help the developing secondary. Much like with Myles Garrett two years ago, I believe Bosa to be a transcendent player who is head and shoulders better than anyone in this draft class and simply too good to pass up.
2. San Francisco 49ers – Quinnen Williams, DT, Alabama
I suspect that by the time the draft rolls around there will plenty of play for a trade to go get the top quarterback in this class, but if they stay here, the 49ers only have to look at their division rivals who will be playing in the Super Bowl to know how important a player of Williams’ ability could be. The former Crimson Tide lineman could develop into the type of player that impacts the game with an up the middle pass rush and run stopping ability, much like Aaron Donald or Ndamukong Suh anchors the Rams defense from the middle. Williams is a bit of a late bloomer with only one strong season to show pro teams, but his talent is there.
3. New York Jets – Josh Allen, DE, Kentucky
The run on defensive players continues here as the Jets try to fix their substandard at best stop troops. The Jets need to improve the pass rush and their scoring defense and Allen should fit in nicely in Gregg Williams attacking defense with his athleticism and aggressive motor. Allen’s a senior who parlayed two previous decent seasons into an explosive final campaign where he became a cornerstone of the Wildcat defense, just like the Jets will hope he’ll become in this scenario.
4. Oakland Raiders – Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan
Gary is an interesting prospect that can move around the line a bit, but will be most useful on the outside in the NFL. The former Wolverine can help Oakland begin to re-build, starting with adding a pass rusher that can start making up for what the Raiders gave away with Khalil Mack. Oakland is a long way away and could go a lot of different ways in pursuing a top player, but one of the best defensive linemen would be a good place to start for Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock, who need to hit a home run in this draft if they are going to keep the doubters at bay.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
I thought there was a chance that the Buccaneers would decide to move on from Jameis Winston after a most turbulent 2018 season to what has been a turbulent career for the former #1 overall pick. However, after picking up his option it appears that Winston will be sticking around for another season. With that, Tampa needs to do a better job of protecting their quarterback and developing a running game. The top offensive tackle in this class in Williams will help on both fronts.
6. New York Giants – Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
Credit where credit is due, Dave Gettleman drafted a highly productive and successful running back in Saquon Barkley at the top of the 2018 draft. However, the team continued to struggle and Eli Manning showed that his days as a Super Bowl winning quarterback are moving further and further away in the rearview mirror. There’s no team that needs the services of the top quarterback in this class than the Giants. I doubt they will be able to grab Haskins with the sixth pick, so I expect to see them moving up a few spots to grab him when the time is right.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars – Drew Lock, QB, Missouri
Simply put, the Jaguars can’t afford to spend another season wasting that defense and the talent on that team with Blake Bortles at QB. They need to find another option before the season begins. That might come from some of the veteran movement in free agency, but I think taking a chance on Lock might be the more prudent play. Lock is a seasoned senior quarterback that for the most part showed improvement in accuracy, playmaking and decisions throughout his career with the Tigers and that is worth taking a chance on in the first round for some team, especially with this year’s class of passers.
8. Detroit Lions – Greedy Williams, CB, LSU
The Lions need help at all three levels of the defense and taking the top cornerback in the draft would be a good place to start. Williams has the traits and athleticism to be a strong outside corner in this league, even if he took a while to show it consistently for LSU. If one of the top pass rushers were to fall here, that’d also be a good choice, but in this scenario the top corner is just more valuable.
9. Buffalo Bills – Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State
Buffalo will be replacing a local legend in Kyle Williams this offseason. Simmons is the kind of disruptive force in the backfield that can go a long way to replacing Williams’ defensive line production. With 18.5 tackles for a loss in 2018, Simmons was a fixture in the opponent’s backfield for the Bulldogs and could be that again next year making the move from the SEC to the NFL.
10. Denver Broncos – Daniel Jones, QB, Duke
Much like the Jaguars, the Broncos seem to be a team just waiting for the right quarterback to step in, not turn the ball over, make enough plays and lead the team to victory, instead of spiraling in defeat. The Duke redshirt junior is a smart QB, who displayed leadership as a two-time captain while progressing on the field to have his best season to date in 2018. Jones is the type of big, strong armed passer that will likely appeal to John Elway as he tries to get Denver back on the winning track.
11. Cincinnati Bengals – Devin White, ILB, LSU
The Bengals allowed more yards than any other team in the NFL this past season, if they want a chance to escape the AFC North basement that needs to change. White is the type of middle linebacker that can make a huge impact with a nose for the ball and a knack for finding different ways to make the big play. Cincinnati has a lot of holes to fill, but White is a good start to a draft that could help them turn things around.
12. Green Bay Packers – Jachai Polite, DE, Florida
Polite burst out with a fantastic junior season with the Gators. Green Bay struggled both in the pass and run game defensively and they could use a guy that made a habit of making big plays behind the line of scrimmage. If the Packers get a healthy Aaron Rodgers back next season and pair him with a defensive playmaker like Polite they will be headed back towards contending in what is becoming the toughest division in football.
13. Miami Dolphins – Brian Burns, DE, Florida State
Miami needs to get younger on defense, in particular finding the replacement of Cameron Wake who is likely to leave as a 37-year old free agent this offseason. Burns produced a double-digit sack season last year for the Seminoles and showed the type of skillset that will be valuable at the top level of football.
14. Atlanta Falcons – Ed Oliver, DT, Houston
Oliver brings a rare amount of athleticism to the defensive tackle position and has production to back it up. Some level of concern over coming from a small school and issues with the Cougar coaching staff make this a slightly risky pick and sends Oliver into the mid first round, but I’m choosing to believe in what Oliver can deliver for NFL teams.
15. Washington – Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma
Washington has learned a hard lesson this year. It’s easy to say you need an upgrade at the quarterback position, but it’s a lot harder to actually find a guy that makes your team that much better. Alex Smith didn’t help them much at all. The right team has to choose to take a chance on Murray and by the end of the draft process I’m not sure it will be a team in the first round, but Washington likes to make a splash so I could see them making a play for the diminutive, but talented signal caller.
16. Carolina Panthers – Cody Ford, OG, Oklahoma
It’s been said for years, the Panthers have to find a way to better protect Cam Newton or they will be driving their star quarterback to an early end of his career. At some point they have to get more serious about making the right type of investment in the front line of their team. Ford is the top interior lineman of this draft and should be able to begin to bolster the trenches for Carolina.
17. Cleveland Browns – Byron Murphy, CB, Washington
The Browns found a quarterback, so check that off the list and they’ve begun to turn the corner. Now they need to work on upgrading the rest of the roster at key spots to turn from a feel good story into a real contender for exciting Januarys. Cleveland could use more depth at corner, they could use somebody to start opposite Denzel Ward and maybe fill in if Ward can’t solve his durability concerns.
18. Minnesota Vikings – Dalton Risner, OT, Kansas State
Risner had a good showing at the Senior Bowl and is quickly becoming my personal favorite lineman of this draft class. Minnesota has some serious issues along the offensive line that limited the running game and put a cap on what Kirk Cousins could do in that offense. Risner should be able to lock down a spot on the line for a long time to come.
19. Tennessee Titans – D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss
Trying to figure out how this wide receiver class will shake out isn’t easy. There doesn’t appear to be a standout #1 guy, so it becomes who can fill a role for teams. Metcalf could be the type of guy that’s a good compliment to the big play ability of Corey Davis. A big, physical receiver that can move the chains and give Mariota a second option in the pass game could really open up the opportunities of this offense.
20. Pittsburgh Steelers – Devin Bush, ILB, Michigan
Pittsburgh needs to fix its defense and get back to the type of football the Steelers are known for. Bush is a stud linebacker that can contribute in a big way for a defense that needs a leader in the heart of the team. The two-time consensus All-American is a freak athlete that knows how to get after the ball carrier, which Pittsburgh desperately needs.
21. Seattle Seahawks – Montez Sweat, DE, Mississippi State
Sweat has the ability to take over games, even though he’s not the most typical first round draft selection as a fifth-year player. The Bulldog defensive end spent two seasons at the JUCO level after a freshman season at Michigan State. Since then, he’s put together two strong seasons in the SEC. Sweat had four multiple TFL’s in his final seven games, not to mention at least one sack in eight of nine games to close the year, that consistency will be key at the next level.
22. Baltimore Ravens – N’Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State
What the Ravens did over the back half of the 2018 season was impressive, re-making the offense to bring in Lamar Jackson and the talented former Louisville quarterback helped lead Baltimore into the playoffs. However, what the Ravens did doesn’t appear to be the most long-term solution moving forward. They need to improve the pass game with Jackson and finally hitting on some skill on the outside after years of misses will be critical for that success. Harry is a big with surprising athleticism and clearly one of the best receivers in the draft, which should fit well in Baltimore.
23. Houston Texans – Greg Little, OT, Ole Miss
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, a young Houston Texans franchise quarterback was sacked a record number of times this season. If Houston wants to avoid having David Carr’s career replicated through Deshaun Watson they better get him some offensive line help. Little blocking Watson’s blindside is a good place to start.
24. Oakland Raiders – DeAndre Baker, CB, Georgia
After grabbing a defensive line prospect in Gary earlier in Round 1, the Raiders get a defensive back in Baker to help the secondary and continue to rebuild the crumbling defense on the bay. Baker was this year’s Jim Thorpe Award winner for the best defensive back in college football while with the Bulldogs and that type of accomplishment and skills to show for it will be very attractive to NFL teams in April.
25. Philadelphia Eagles – Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson
The Eagles have needs on both sides of the ball, but getting a guy like Wilkins that can anchor one side of the ball from the middle of the field would be too good of an opportunity to pass up. Defensive line talent is going early and often in the 2019 NFL Draft and Wilkins has plenty of tape being an impact player for one of college football’s best defenses the past few years.
26. Indianapolis Colts – Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma
Andrew Luck finally turned in a healthy season and the Colts reaped the benefits with a return to football in January. Now they need to continue to build around Luck and make the team even stronger. The defense was pretty good last year and Indy really could use another weapon to make the passing game live up to its possibilities. Unlike the first couple receivers taken, Brown is quick and shifty, but also smaller. He’ll be a unique weapon in the slot to play off the Colts reliance on tight ends in the middle of the field.
27. Oakland Raiders – Josh Jacobs, RB, Alabama
Oakland has already done plenty of work on the defensive side of the ball this draft and now they turn the attention to offense. Jacobs is a good example of the modern running back that can catch, block and run the ball effectively. That type of runner would be a welcome addition to an offense that failed to achieve balance or productivity this season. Jacobs can be the bellcow that helps Derek Carr move the ball and score touchdowns.
28. Los Angeles Chargers – Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson
This is a highly questionable pick that will become clearer as we move through the spring. The Chargers no doubt need an impact player in the middle of the defensive line to balance out their growing stable of pass rushers. Lawrence needs to answer questions about his suspension to end his career at Clemson, but if he is able to put that behind him a first round talent no doubt will be left standing.
29. Kansas City Chiefs – Mack Wilson, LB, Alabama
The Chiefs have one of the most prolific offenses of all time. They have no issues there. However, defensively they have nothing but issues. Wilson is a talented linebacker that can make plays. Also, coming from Nick Saban it’s a safe bet that Wilson has learned something about leadership and intelligent football while at Alabama. Something else the Chiefs need on defense.
30. Green Bay Packers – T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa
Nearly across the board Hockenson doubled his production from 2017 to 2018 and is using that leap to head to the NFL Draft early. The Packers need far more weapons on offense if they are going to rebound from a rare disappointing season. While wide receivers would be a better place to go, the prospects aren’t there, rather than force it Hockenson would offer Green Bay a move tight end that could create space down field.
31. Los Angeles Rams – Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama
Thompson would be a great addition to a defense and secondary that is getting older and could use some upgrades through the draft. Thompson showcased a versatile skillset and ability to make plays in both the run and pass game in his one year of full-time duty in Tuscaloosa, which will be very appealing to the Rams.
32. New England Patriots – Irv Smith Jr., TE, Alabama
Rob Gronkowski is clearly not the player he used to be anymore. Even if he doesn’t choose retirement this year, finding a talented mismatch tight end to eventually replace him would be smart for New England, who needs a strong tight end in its offense. Smith is a great mismatch weapon and should be a talented pass catcher at the next level.

I don't know much about individual NFL players but the amount of thought put into this post is quite compelling. Good work, man.

If we come away with both Polite and Hock I'm going to need someone to pinch me, especially if Hock is still available at 30. Goddamn that'd be sweet.

I don't think the Panthers would draft a guard in the first round. It's a need for sure on the left side, but we've still got Turner on the right and we have more pressing needs (DE, Safety, LT, maybe DT?). There is no way we would pass on Montez Sweat IMO. Then again I can't see Sweat dropping to 20.

Please tell me that Montez Sweat isn't pronounced "Sweet". I want to go to bed with a smile.
