The corporate influence of Monsanto aside, I really don't see why GMO labelling has not been approved as of yet. Some suggest it'll dissuade consumers from purchasing fruit and vegetables that would have otherwise been purchased, therefore impacting sales and spawning some unwarranted health concerns/paranoia, but all that is really required is a small, harmless little bright sticker that says "GMO". I really can not understand that line of argument. Besides, there has yet to be any conclusive evidence that wholeheartedly suggests GM food is bad for human consumption. I'd probably still purchase GM food on a regular basis even if labelling was given the green light (since many of the major supermarkets in Australia seldom sell full-grown organic produce), but I still think it is the consumers' right to be aware the fruit and vegetables they are purchasing is genetically modified.
This really only seems like a problem in the US and some other countries. Russia have outright banned GM food whilst other states have either approved labelling seamlessly, controlled the number of GM imports, or also implemented a full ban. I think all of this speculation and debate really just is reflective on Monsanto's prodigious influence and power and nothing more.
