Girl Rock

Postby Battleaxe » Aug 12, '15, 11:34 am

I've always had a soft spot for rock-leaning female artists/bands, and I'm currently on a major Juliana Hatfield binge. I was the guy that all my metal-head friends would make fun of for listening to bands like Sleater Kinney and Veruca Salt, and it always felt like I was in the minority when it came to taking women in rock seriously.

Is this something any of you can relate to? Are there any female artists/bands that hold a special place in your heart?

I love a good rock song with a woman singing. I don't care for all woman rock bands, I could care less if the artists are male or female, but a female singer in a rock back definitely hits a special spot for me.

Maximum the Hormone is a japanese band and occasionally the drummer will sing and her voice just adds something else to the song. Love hearing that.

Definitely enjoy Nightwish, they have great vocals.

I don't listen to a lot of rock with female vocalists, but it's more a coincidence than anything else. I'm certainly not opposed to female rock singers. It's just that most of my favourite bands don't happen to have a female singer.

That being said, I do like some stuff by the following bands (off the top of my head):
- Lacuna Coil
- Blondie
- The Cardigans
- Evanescence
- No Doubt
- Hole
- Babymetal

None of them are bands where I love all of their stuff though. I have to pick and choose songs.

Though I tend to be more of a rock guy, I get most of my female vocals from pop or blues artists, like Regina Spektor or Sara Bareilles.

Ditto, love me some female vocals.

Some of my favorites:

Nightwish
Within Temptation
Halestorm
Lacuna Coil
Destiny Potato (I know, what a fucking name, but seriously check them out, Djent with awesome female vocals)
Above The Earth
Flyleaf
The Pretty Wreckless

The first 5 of these I can pretty happily listen to anything they put out.

The only couple examples I could think of before coming into this thread were Paramore (who I do like) and Evanecsence (meh) so I'm glad to be learning about more! I do love female vocals but they're rather underrepresented in mainstream rock so it's hard to find them.

Paramore make me sad. Worst live performance I've ever been to by miles.

I really like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I downloaded one of their albums, Fever to Tell, and have been meaning to get more. They're super punky and from a chick band it just sounds.. awesome.

I really like Metric, as well. Also, recently, I started listening to some PJ Harvey. Maybe a little more old school than some of the newer "girl rock" but definitely worth a try.

Part of me feels like it's almost criminal that women are so underrepresented in mainstream rock music, but unfortunately, aside from a brief period in the 90's, it's kind of always been that way. Rock music is something of a "boys club", and I'm sure many women are intimidated by that. I used to date a girl who sang and played guitar for an all-girl band, and every time they played a show there was always a handful of guys in the audience who found it necessary to disparage them (some loudly, some under their breath) in some way just for being girls in a rock band.

I see people at local concerts making fun of bands with female singers or dismissing them sometimes too. But funnily enough, at a local level I think I've liked a higher percentage of the bands with female singers. Obviously there are a lot more rock bands in the area with male vocalists, but most of them tend to be pretty shite. Whereas a lot of the bands with female singers tend to be pretty good.

That might be a coincidence, or it might be that I tend to go to as many 'metal' gigs as 'rock' gigs. And female singers are a lot less likely to try to base their entire performance around gruff vocals, which I usually hate.

Paramore, the pretty wreckless, halestorm, cohead and Cambria (although I do think its just a feminine sounding dude, but it sounds cool) lacuna coil, flyleaf with the original singer not the new chick, the morning stars, meg Myers.

Not so much no doubt but I do like some of the early sublime songs featuring gwen. Paramore is hit and miss, some songs I like and others just blow.

Definitely a dude. :lol I know plenty of people who think he's a woman.

I love me a good female singer band, even though I haven't gone out of my way to find what's out there.

4 Non Blondes
The Agonist
BABYMETAL
The Cardigans
The Cranberries
Courage My Love
Dead Sara
The Donnas
Evanescence
Evarane
Flyleaf
Garbage
Halestorm (They're way too generic and mainstream for me, but they're catchy)
Hammerbox
Jefferson Airplane
L7
Lacuna Coil
Light Light
Metric (They're a little too close to pop, but they're one of my favorite bands of all time)
Nightwish
No Doubt (The older stuff is pretty decent)
Paramore (They're more pop now, but they're great rock as far as "manufactured" bands go)
Patti Smith
Poe
Roxette
Stevie Nicks

I left out a lot of non rock bands, and included some that could reasonable be considered pop.

I loved the YYY's first two albums, but haven't been so keen on what they've released since. While I haven't explored Metric very extensively, I do like the handful of songs that I have heard. The singer has the kind of sweet, girlish voice that I'm a real sucker for.

For whatever reason, I was never able to get into PJ Harvey, but there's plenty of music from her day that I enjoy now despite not liking it at the time, so maybe I'll give PJ another shot.

Has anyone mentioned the band Lita is in?

That's all I know of it, Lita sings in a band, don't know if its even rock but I would assume it is.
