Ghostbusters Reboot - The Trailer

Postby Ali » Mar 04, '16, 12:12 am

So... thoughts?

I think it sucks. I can't tell if it's a remake, a reboot, or a sequel, but I think it's trying to be all 3, which usually spells disaster.

Oh, and they turned the black Ghostbuster from a Working Class Everyman to a loud stereotype. That's wonderful. /s

I'm not one of these type of guys who immediately cringe and the thought of a remake or a reboot. I usually wait to hear or see more about it before I make a judgment. I think sometimes, if done right, a remake can be good or even necessary. This, I don't think is one of those times. This is clearly a cash cow. Let's take a movie which was extremely popular in the 80's and include a bunch of actors who have had some success recently. Also, let's cling onto the recent trend of comedy movies with female actresses. Don't get me wrong, I am all for more comedies starring females. Bridesmaids was actually pretty damn hilarious. But try to come up with more original movies. Nothing in this trailer came across as funny.

There are so many interesting conversations to be had about this sequel. Does Ghostbusters need to be remade? What are the merits of recreating a classic and gender swapping the characters? Is it a good opportunity for women to get more leading roles, or should we be coming up with more original roles for them instead. Is it offensive that the black character is the only one without a good college education? Is it still offensive if that was true of the original film also? Can we conclude then that remake culture is therefore one of the primary reasons for outdated values in Hollywood films today? If we found something acceptable in a film from 30 years ago, do we still need to consider it acceptable now?

It's a pity this just looks so fucking awful that it's really pointless to actually get into any of these debates.

I keep seeing people debate the merits of the various choices they've made with this film, but it's hard to figure out why they care so much when it looks so terrible.

^Ugh, I had someone call me a sexist on Facebook for saying that movie looks awful. I totally agree with what you're saying, I'd be willing to indulge those types of conversations if the movie looked worthwhile but jesus christ this looks really bad.

Is it sexist to replace 4 men with 4 women and make the movie worse? Because if that is the case, then the director of this film may be very sexist.

It is a horrid trailer. None of the jokes land at all, and beyond that, a lot of those jokes are bland and outdated anyway.

There's enough talent involved in the film that it really shouldn't suck, but the trailer's not made a great first impression. And when they were already dealing with the backlash of casting four women, it doesn't look great.

I will say one positive thing... at least Melissa McCarthy isn't playing the "HURR DURR I'M FAT AND FALL DOWN A LOT" role in the trailer.

Nope instead Leslie Jone is playing every black woman stereotype.
