Leonardo DiCaprio will be playing famous serial killer HH Holmes. This sounds like it's going to be awesome.

I was half curious about the film just because it was Scorsese and DiCaprio, but nothing I had heard about the actual story/source material made me excited so I ended up giving it a miss.
This though, looks really interesting. I find serial killers pretty interesting in general and @Kirbi (who is like an encyclopedia of serial killer knowledge) has told me about Holmes, and he sounds like a really fascinating, fucked up character. A film about him with this kind of talent behind it could be amazing. Really looking forward to this one.

Nah, he wasn't Jack the Ripper. Their MO was completely different and the letters which were sent to police strongly suggested Jack was English with a cockney dialect. There's not really much evidence in the way of Holmes being in London at the time of the murders, either. To call them the same person is quite a stretch.

I don't know man,bur I'm at work so I'll be back later. Any reasonings to why you think he isn't?

They're just different people, there's no two ways about it. Off the top of my head:
- H.H. Holmes and Jack the Ripper targeted different kinds of people. H.H. Holmes killed men, women and children, Jack the Ripper strictly killed female sex workers.
- H.H. Holmes and Jack the Ripper killed in different ways. Holmes hung people, gassed people, came up with quite inventive ways of killing. Jack the Ripper stabbed his victims.
- H.H. Holmes killed secretively, hidden away in his murder house. Jack left his victims bodies in the street, for all to see.
- H.H. Holmes and Jack the Ripper killed for different reasons. Holmes killed for elaborate insurance scams and to make money selling the corpses to medical schools. Jack the Ripper killed his victims for the sake of killing.
- There was a sexual motive to the Ripper's killings, as he strictly targeted prostitutes, mutilated their vaginas and spoke about the sexual nature of his crimes in his letters to the police. He also claimed to have eaten the kidney of one of his victims, which was possibly true as he removed the kidney of one of his victims and mailed half of it to investigators. There wasn't any cannibalistic or sexual motive to Holmes killings, it was just business.
- Jack the Ripper taunted investigators and the local press bragging about his crimes. He revelled in notoriety. Holmes on the other hand was quite secretive and basically did everything to avoid drawing attention upon himself. He hired and fired many people while building his murder castle incase they began to question anything, and told several lies to avoid suspicion. He didn't want to draw attention as it would blow his whole operation.
- Jack's letters to the police and the graffiti found on the wall near one of his crimescenes suggested he was English with a local cockney dialect, something Holmes was not.
- Holmes actually had a background in science, but there's not much to suggest Jack the Ripper was a doctor. This is a subject of debate, but basically the idea that Jack was a doctor is questionable and mostly comes from speculation.
- There's not much evidence which places Holmes in London at the time of the killings.
That's about it, really. They were two distinct people, they were just around at the same time and had *some* similarities, but also overwhelming differences.
