I'm mixed on this. Some people are saying that Stannis has always been a piece of shit, and that's completely untrue as far as I can see. People are painting him as someone who's desperate for power, but I don't think he's that character. The reason he thinks he should be king is because he's genuinely the next in line and he thinks things should be done properly.
And though he does some evil shit sometimes, it tends to be in the context of what needs to be done. He doesn't kill people just for sport, or for politics. He's one of the few people in the books - or maybe the only person - who always seems to be acting for what he believes is the greater good. Regardless of the consequences. He marched his army North, even though it wasn't strategically the best move, because the seven kingdoms needed protecting. That shows that he doesn't put his own needs first.
So I don't believe he's just a cunt through and through, which is why it saddens me that he's had Shireen killed. Before this he was a character that I supported, and now I can't do that any longer. But I'm not sure it's out of character either. He's someone willing to make great personal sacrifices for what he believes is the greater good. He's seen genuine miracles performed by this God of Light. He sadly doesn't have much reason to doubt what Melisandre is telling him. If he thinks this is what needs to be done in order for the forces of good to prevail, it makes sense to me that he would do it.
Unfortunately though, it means that he can't be a character that the audience supports anymore. He's now merely a complicated villain or at best an unlikable anti-hero. I'll kinda miss rooting for the Mannis! Hopefully Jon Snow gets more involved in the war against the Boltons to give us someone to really cheer for.
