Do you clap at the cinema?

Postby Viazon » Feb 22, '15, 6:38 am

I don't think I have ever seen that happened here in the UK. I seriously can't remember a single time it has happened. However, I have heard it is quite common in the States. Do you clap and certain scenes or have you been there when others have clapped? How do you feel about it?

I personally don't see the point in clapping. I understand clapping at a theater show or play or at a sports game, but the cinema is different. When you applaud someone, it's best when they are there so they know you are applauding them. When you clap at the cinema, they have no idea. You are basically just clapping at a giant screen.

Never. If I was at a screening with the film makers or actors present, I'd probably clap, but clapping at a normal showing is just rude and obtrusive to anyone else trying to enjoy the film.

I've occasionally clapped at the end of a movie if it's particularly good or powerful, but never for just one scene. Occasionally I may respond instantly if something surprises me, but that's not really a clap.

You strike me as the kind of person who claps at the cinema.

As soon as I saw you'd posted in this thread, I knew it was going to be a confession that you've done it :lol

I go to the cinema quite a bit, but I had never seen this done here in Ireland until tonight.

Myself, Kirbi and my brother went to see The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in the cinema a little earlier. It only just came out over here; I've been anticipating its release for ages. And after it ended people started clapping. I found it a little weird.

I did join in though. If there's a film that deserves that kind of response, this one does. It's an incredible film.

From Washington state, plenty....plenty of people clap at the cinema. I never do it, I don't care to and I think at times it's really obnoxious behavior if it gets drawn out.

But yea, it does happen a lot, especially in funny films. Actually mostly in funny films. I don't really ever see it happen at the end during credits or any action bits.

Only if it's a silent picture with a live band and only after the film is over.

I've only ever heard it a couple times after a movie was over, both times it was at a midnight premiere when people are more likely to be pumped up anyway. I wouldn't say it's a common thing in the States, at least in my experience.

To answer the question, no I don't. It's weird.

I've only clapped at the end of one movie (that I can remember) and that was believe it or not The Rundown.

What can I say, I'm a fan of "The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment". ;)
