Your favourite non-Pixar animated film?

Postby Matteo » Nov 05, '13, 5:03 am

When the Wind Blows gets my vote. Such a tragic and heartbreaking story. I also really love Shrek.

That's a really broad range, considering there have been hundreds of animated films and only about 13 by Pixar... so I'm gonna narrow this window.

If we're talking Non-Pixar CG Animation, my pick is easily Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. It's just a terrific and fun movie.

If we make it Non-CG, it gets harder. I'd probably pick Spirited Away there because it is absolutely gorgeous and a huge visual feat.

Now, that film, while produced by Studio Ghibli, was largely distributed by Disney. So if you want me to pick my favorite animated film with absolutely no Disney involvement, it's The Secret of NIMH. Beautiful animation, a great and mature story, and still a lot of fun for kids.

Disney movies are probably going to be a pretty common pick in this thread, so I'm going to go outside of those as well. Some personal favorites:

The Iron Giant
The Brave Little Toaster
Shrek
The Land Before Time
An Americal Tail
Feivvel Goes West
The Phantom Tollbooth

^ Ah, I love The Iron Giant. Really doesn't get mentioned all that often when discussing the animated greats, but it's definitely up there.

Bambi is my favorite animated film as well as my favorite Disney picture. It's pretty much perfect. I watched it with three buds of mine a couple years back, all of us were in tears.

I love The Iron Giant, that's one of the stronger animated films I've seen.

My Neighbour Totoro is another really interesting film. It's strange in that it doesn't really have any source of conflict in the story, but that's part of what makes it so compelling.

For all the complaining people did about the Shrek sequels, the first movie was awesome and showed really clever use of deconstruction for comedic effect.

I have loads of others that I'm forgetting, I'd imagine. I have a real fondness for animated movies.
