PubTalkForum's Greatest Actor! - Bracket and General Tourney Discussion

Postby Everlong » Sep 24, '14, 7:33 pm

PubTalkForum's Greatest Actor Tournament!

Attached you'll find the initial bracket for the tournament. I'm without PhotoShop at the moment so I had to fill out a generic online template. For purposes of readability I just used first initial and last name.

Image

http://i.imgur.com/kX5Gdae.jpg for full res

Bracket was formed by:

1) Determining how many people voted for whom
2) Arranging within seedings by total votes
3) I broke ties by determining matchups that I thought could create some interesting first round discussion.

Examples of a couple matchups I made myself to break ties rather than letting the math dictate:

Robin Williams vs. Will Smith, two comedic actors with a talent for drama as well.
Gary Oldman vs. Christian Bale, two well-respected actors known for blending into their roles.

There were a couple others as well.

Looking forward to getting this started! I probably won't have time to make the initial threads until the beginning of next week, so for now you can just start looking at the bracket and familiarizing yourself with the actors.

LET'S GO!!! :tim

Does anyone else find it weird having actors and actresses mixed together? Just feels like there should have been an actor and an actress bracket.

But then the male bracket would be much larger than the female bracket.

Well, every metric used to judge male and female actors is the same. I think you can pretty fairly compare quality of acting across genders.

I suppose. But then why do all these awards shows have a Best Actor and Best Actress category? Why not just Best Actor? ;)

Because there aren't enough quality lead roles for female actors to make that a workable solution. In this situation, however, we're comparing across careers - so that shouldn't come up quite as much. Hopefully. :P

There's no real difference between male and female actors anyway, is there? I find I love as many female performances as male performances, and not in some completely separate kind of way. It won't be difficult to compare the two.

I'm looking forward to some of these matches. Bale vs Oldman is the one I'm awaiting most eagerly in Round One. Should be good!

Predicting second round to be:

  • De Niro vs Hanks
  • Jesus Christ I have no idea
  • Streep vs Caine
  • Oldman vs DiCaprio
  • Nicholson vs Williams
  • Day-Lewis vs Washington (not my pick, just what I think will happen)
  • Pacino vs Spacey
  • Eastwood vs Brando

And third round:

  • De Niro vs madness (thank god you were here, Bobby!)
  • Streep v Oldman (a girl can dream, right?*)
  • Nicholson vs Day-Lewis
  • Pacino vs Brando

De Niro takes out the next contender, and Nicholson takes out Pacino for the Taxi Driver / One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest showdown we all knew was coming.

* Of Gary Oldman.

Fair enough. There's no way a woman wins this though :D

You're probably right, based on the way they're seeded. Most of the women aren't making it out of the first round. It's partially because of the way Hollywood works too - there are far more quality roles for men above a certain age range than for women, so there's more opportunities for male actors to build up a fantastic body of work over a number of decades.

Meryl Streep could conceivably win the whole thing, as she has had a long and successful career filled with memorable roles. But no other female on the list stands any kind of chance.

I do agree with Kirbi that it'll probably come down to De Niro versus Nicholson. In which case, I'll be voting for Nicholson. Then again, the cynic in me says that Robin Williams will be a popular choice after his death too. Though that's taking nothing away from the man's talent as he's actually one of my favourite actors.

I personally think Nicholson is the most overrated actor of all time and won't even be voting for him in the first round, but that's a discussion best saved until later :P

How are we doing this anyway? Are things kicking off tomorrow? Two matches per day for the first round?

Yeah I think that'll be what we do. I haven't had time to get this thing started but I'm hoping to get it kicked off by midweek.

If I were picking the final four purely on my tastes alone it would be DeNiro vs Freeman and Denzel vs Eastwood.

Didn't have the time to get up the next set of matchups today, but I'll do it tomorrow... we'll be starting the 2s vs. the 7s!
