Mostly I label it as a gimmick because I find it really gimmicky. It seems like he just wants to prove that he can do this stuff, which isn't really something worth bragging about to me. He's willingly fucking with his own body.
I agree that's not what made him famous too. The guy has real acting chops. So I don't see why he feels the need to do this. He could have just as good a career without it. I dunno, maybe he's just angling for more awards, as the academy tends to have a bias towards people who go through huge physical transformations for their roles.
And I find it pretty distracting in some films. I guess that's my biggest problem with it as a viewer. He's trying to make himself into something else, but it just doesn't work for me. Watching American Hustle, I couldn't see him as this entirely new person. My brain just kept asking me "Why is Christian Bale so fat?" It actually made me less immersed in the film.

Yeah, it's not really the same thing though. There's no huge amount of effort going into him losing or gaining fat or muscle. He's not putting his body through the ringer. He accomplishes his transformations through styling and largely through acting. That's not gimmicky to me, that's the job.
Without that much effort, Gary Oldman can completely transform himself into someone else. Whereas Bale puts in much more effort to change his physical appearance and doesn't manage to achieve the same level of transformation. When I watch an Oldman film, I don't see the actor I see the character. With Bale I sometimes just see an actor that's trying too hard. That's the difference.
Now I'd be lying if I said I wasn't captivated by some of Bale's performances. And the transformations have worked for me at times in the past. But sometimes it's too much. Maybe American Hustle is pushing my opinions more strongly in one direction because that felt really unnecessary to me, and it was distracting, and that film was fucking stupid anyway. And Bale wasn't particularly good in it either, I was surprised of the fuss people made of him.

One last thing: I doubt the handsome, white, male Hollywood A-Lister is going to have any trouble finding suitable roles. Bale could land basically any film he wants. If there are specific roles that he can't land without putting on a load of weight, maybe just let a heavier guy take the role instead. Someone who couldn't be used as the protagonist of 95% of the movies out there.
