The new Dr Who isn't very good. Discuss.

- I really didn't like Capaldi as the Doctor. It's not an age thing, he just doesn't seem to fit. He seems to be trying so hard to borrow David Tennant's quirkyness, and just looks weird.

- Clara is awfully dull. Really, really dull. She and Capaldi had very little chemistry.

- The dialogue and writing were terrible throughout. They haven't improved at all since the last series.

- Nothing about this episode stirred my interest and made me anticipate watching it in future. The plot was boring and hard to follow, and for the first half an hour it mostly consisted of Capaldi roaming around, making cringeworthy jokes and trying his hardest to be David Tennant.

Dr Who has jumped the shark. We now have reptilian ninja lesbians, a t-rex and poor jokes about Scottish independence. It's quite bad.

I tried really hard to like Dr Who, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I think we watched 2 seasons ... maybe 3. We saw the Christopher Eccleston stuff and a lot of the David Tenant stuff. My problem with the show is that it is wildly inconsistent. You get some great episodes, and some that are absolutely fucking terrible. It comes from it being an iconic show that a lot of writers want to work on, I guess. Steven Moffat's episodes tended to be great, while there were certain other ones that were pretty embarrassing. There were obviously budget restrictions too, so that led to some truly terrible looking monsters and special effects when the directors didn't know how to work within those restrictions.

At its best it was a great show. I personally liked Eccleston a lot more than Tenant as the Doctor. It seemed like during Tenant's run, the bad episodes were becoming more common and the good episodes further and further apart.

Apparently Moffat becomes show runner some time during Matt Smith's run, so maybe I'd like that stuff more, but after being burned out by a few truly awful episodes (I think the last one we watched was a Christmas special that ended up being one of the worst episodes of television I've ever seen), it was hard to maintain the enthusiasm to keep watching.

Too be fair, the reptilian lesbian has been there for a while now, and since the reboot of the series way back when, every time they went to the future (or to the past for that matter) there was always a gay character to show how liberal the Dr. Who universe is or some shit.

Apparently Moffat becomes show runner some time during Matt Smith's run, so maybe I'd like that stuff more, but after being burned out by a few truly awful episodes (I think the last one we watched was a Christmas special that ended up being one of the worst episodes of television I've ever seen), it was hard to maintain the enthusiasm to keep watching.

This was a Moffat episode (apparently) and it was shite. It was getting torn apart on Twitter, with the only defenders being the staunch Dr Who die-hards.

Eccleston was a brilliant Doctor and Tennant was entertaining too. But since then, it's gone to pot. That showed tonight.

I've never been an avid follower, but around 2009 the show was pretty good. A lot of people found it unmissable.

Unfortunately, the show is still riding the coattails of that run. People tune in expecting to see quality television, and they're left disappointed. Lazy writing has killed the show.

It's the same as Star Trek or any of those big nerdy shows. Usually there are so many contributors to these shows that you'll get some amazing once off episodes and others that are terrible. It's funny that so many of the nerdiest ongoing franchises are unable to find any kind of consistency at all. It does give nerds plenty to complain about though, which I guess is important to them too. I count myself among their numbers and I love to criticize these things, so I should know.

I'm pretty much the same way. I will say I enjoyed a lot of Matt Smith's run as i find him fascinating as an actor and the Weeping Angels should be watched by anyone, because they're just extremely clever.

I haven't seen the new episode so I can't say anything about Capaldi being the new doctor. My hopes for the show were for Capaldi to be a Malcolm Tucker-esque Doctor. Realizing he was the last regeneration and it drove him to be mean as fuck and if there's one thing we know Capaldi can be, it's a twat. (Like if he went on a five minute rant, calling Clara a cunt, it'd be the greatest thing ever) But alas, Moffat fucked that all up by introducing the War Doctor and that shit story line that just so happens to change EVERYTHING about the show. Fucking shit that was.

I really enjoyed Doctor Who up till about Steven Moffat came along (and all the annoying fans). Series five was decent for the first half then went to shit. Don't get me wrong, Moffat wrote some great episodes while he was in the Davies era but his direction of the show is just poor. I also hate River Song. Everything about her.

I've seen a couple of times that Capaldi is "trying to be like Tennant" (at least three times from you actually) and I just don't get it. He's nothing like Tennant in my view and I've not seen anything that makes me think he's trying to be.

I agree that Clara is kinda shite, she's completely interchangeable as far as I can see, her character seems to be that she is kinda hot but feisty and a bit of a control freak, there's not much there.

Doctor Who has never had great dialogue but I still find it enjoyable anyway. I haven't seen this weeks episode btw I just saw this post and figured I'd reply. "Listen" was my favourite this season so far, I thought it was pretty good.

As far as jumping the shark, I'm not sure how much of the show you've been watching in recent years but imo the show it better now than when Matt Smith was The Doctor, it hasn't jumped the shark by any means and I think Capaldi is still growing into the role, I've got pretty good hopes for his tenure as The Doctor.

I'm in the same camp as you for a lot of what you're saying, I loved Eccleston as the Doctor and the majority of his run as the Doctor was fantastic to me. Tennant wasn't quite as good for me but I still loved a lot of the stuff he did. During that time I really enjoyed Moffat's episodes, they were some of my very favourites so when I found out he was taking over as showrunner when Matt Smith became the Doctor I was really excited.

I was frankly disappointed though, Moffat seems to be great at writing contained, one-off stories but I'm not exactly thrilled with his tenure in charge of the show. It remains to be seen if the over arching stuff he's got going on right now will turn out to be good but generally most of his stuff since he took the reigns hasn't really been my cup of tea.
