What's the best documentary you've ever seen?

Postby PorkChop » Jul 12, '14, 8:56 am

This was on tv recently in the UK: 'The Armstrong Lie'

It's pretty lengthy, but it's a great documentary about Lance Armstrong and the extent he went to cover up his doping. It features several interviews with Armstrong himself, as well as his former teammates and also the people he sued. It's a good watch.

Without any doubt, it was definitely The Imposter.

It's a documentary centered on a young Frenchman who claims to a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who has been missing for 3 years. He contacts the family and they end up taking him in, somehow failing to realise that he's not the same child that they had lived with for 13 years.

It's a really interesting, chilling story. It's amazing to think that it actually happened.

I'd have to have a think about that, the best one I've seen in recent weeks was 'Made Of Stone' - the documentary following the Stone Roses as they reformed the other year. Great viewing for any fans.

I've seen this and I didn't actually like it that much - I was a bit disappointed.

I've read severals reviews about it being 'chilling' and things, but my reaction was more 'what the fuck?'

Well that's your fault, you should clearly know that any person who uses the word chilling to describe a movie is a fucking idiot and has no idea what they are talking about.

Other telltale signs of idiots reviewing movies and are words like 'touching' and 'quirky'.

"Man on Wire" is mine. It's about Philippe Petit walking a tight rope between the twin towers. It sounds lame but it's great. It shows all the prep work as well which is actually pretty damn neat.

"The Smartest Guys in the Room" Its about the Enron scandal and details how those in charge thought they were doing something innovative, but were actually causing the downfall of one of the biggest global companies in the world. It also details Arthur Anderson's shady accounting practices that lead to Sarbane-Oxley. If you don't care about economics than try "The Wrestling Road Diaries" It details Bryan Danielson's last shows on the indy's before heading to WWE. Its great insight into what life on the independent wrestling circuit is like. Also it makes you appreciate where Daniel Bryan has gotten to more.

I thought it was really interesting. Particularly later on, once I realised that it was possible that the family had killed the child and were just pretending that this imposter was their son, because it benefited them. I think that was the 'chilling' part. It was a really creepy notion.

Delving into the mind of the imposter was intriguing too, as he was obviously extremely messed up.

My favorite is Rush Beyond the Lighted Stage. Such a in depth look at the legendary band. I learned a ton about them that I had never known before. Especially about Neil Peart.

Truth of the Lie by Goncalo Amaral is one that's always interested me. It's about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and it pretty much debunks the abduction theory with evidence and reasons to back it up. Very interesting watch, there's also a book of the same title but it's only available online.

Zeitgeist is the biggest crock of shit that passes as a documentary, ever. The things it says about the origins of Christianity are so factually inaccurate it's embarrassing.
