He didn't "have it coming", I don't think. He wasn't even really a bad king, he was winning all his battles against all odds and had been thrown in at the deep end as soon as he became the (teenage) king. I kinda blamed Catelyn a little for agreeing to marry him off to one of the Freys. The Freys had a lot of leverage, but Catelyn's brother should have been more than an appropriate match if Catelyn had been more stubborn. In the end, she just put more pressure on her son, who was already dealing with enough.
To be honest though, I think Robb's death was inevitable. He didn't have a whole lot more tricks up his sleeve and was going up against opposition much larger and more powerful than what he had available. After Stannis was defeated at the Blackwater, it probably sealed Robb's fate no matter what. It just happened that his defeat was a lot nastier than it had to be.
I think Robb's death hurts the story, because his was the only army worth supporting. Everyone else is just looking for power, Robb was looking to protect his people and get revenge for his father. Everyone else wanted to be King/Queen, but Robb just wanted to be King in the North. Without him in contention, everyone is just various degrees of greedy asshole.
